To achieve an all-over matt finish the Kodak NexPress coats the sheet inline, using a clear ink as a fifth colour after
the four-colour process. The sheet is then passed through a separate sealer unit using heat to activate the clear ink
and create a matt finish.
Protection coat
Protection coat applies a coat of clear ink across the substrate and smoothes out the CMYK peaks and troughs
resulting in a smooth, consistent flat appearance. This option is useful for complex print designs that may feel or
look ‘stepped’.

IQ image coat restricts the clear ink to only those areas of the sheet which actually contain printed images. This
option uses less clear ink and should be selected for less image-intensive jobs. Areas of the sheet which remain

Q How are files set up to take advantage of the expanded colour gamut offered by the fifth colour unit?
A Provide photos in RGB with their input colour profiles intact and let the press do the conversion.
- In Adobe Photoshop® check Embed Colour Profile in the Save As menu.
-The NexPress will determine the optimal settings.
- If images are available only in CMYK, there won’t be enough information to achieve a benefit from the fifth
colour.

Matt sealer can also be used for a distinctive watermark effect to enhance security.
To add a watermark or large areas of spot matt or flood coating rather than an over-all seal:
1. Use Adobe InDesign® or Adobe Illustrator® to create a spot colour swatch:
a. Name the swatch ‘NexPress DryInk clear’
b. Designate it as Spot colour
c. Set the colour to CMYK: 0, 75, 100, 0 (colour can be set to any value, but the goal is to create contrast.)
To cover part of the document such as an image box, create a duplicate of the graphic, applying the spot colour to
the duplicate and placing it directly above the original in register, specified to overprint. Areas with no ink can be
applied as a watermark. There are no restrictions on the use of Spot Clear as compared to Spot Gloss.
2. Set all the newly coloured vector files’ transparency blending to Multiply.

In Illustrator open: Window/Transparency
3. Save the file and export a PDF in the normal way.
