Story:
Name:
List 15 key words that describe and relate to the
story topic. Brainstorming in teams of two or three
is often helpful. Looking at the photos and reading
the story often helps build the list of words.

2 | Brainstorm Rhyming Words
From the list of key words from step one, identify six words
that have strong storytelling potential. Using a rhyming
dictionary or website and small group brainstorming,
generate a list of words that rhyme with each key word.

Using the list of key words and rhyming words from steps one and two,
craft colorful and expressive words and phrases that creatively capture
the story for use as a primary headline. Consider alliteration, assonance,
oxymoron, antonym, cliché, homonym, onomatopoeia, pun, rhyme and
synonym. Consult page 41 of the 1,2,3 Student Yearbook Guide. The
secondary headline is often written in sentence style and adds specific
information to supplement the short, catchy primary headline.
