Now that all the business is settled, pour
yourself a cup of tea and let’s do this
thing.
QTPOC Speakeasy Facebook Group
There are a lot of Facebook groups
for Autostraddlers out there! Today
we wanna tell you about the QTPOC
speakeasy, which QTPOC straddlers
can join here: http://on.fb.me/1p8p6dc
During the United States Prohibition
Era, a speakeasy was a place that
operated illegally to sell and serve
alcohol. Patrons had to “speak easy” in order to get a drink. The criminalized
status of alcohol created an entire subculture based on codes, keeping your
voice low, and trying not to attract attention.
Calling our QTPOC-only group The Speakeasy plays with the idea of what
it’s like to be living in the cultural shadow of white privilege. However, ours
isn’t a place for silence. Our conversation on the mountain has turned into a
Facebook group of humans who share everything from personal triumphs and
must-download artists to irl acts of racism and microagressions. We comment
on each others’ posts and continue to support each other through moments
of hell and moments of fucking joy. We do this in a group that is safe from the
dumb and hurtful shit non-QTPOC people say and believe. We do it here so
that we can function in the world and have the patience and strength to deal
with all the extra. Speakeasy for life. Please join the conversation.

Since camp ended, your loyal
correspondent
has
been
traveling from city to unfamiliar
city, collecting experiences and
— when the opportunity presents
itself — pouring one out for our
mountaintop queer community,
which I very much miss. I’m
currently staying in Austin, TX
that’s hung all over with crafts and
is home to several of my college
friends, a rotating series of potted
plants, and a pair of talkative,
astoundingly smooth-feathered
female Khaki Campbells. Meet
my new friends, Puff and The
Duchess. They’re female Khaki
Campbell ducks who were raised
side-by-side from ducklings, and
they won’t go anywhere without
each other. If one is in the hutch,
both are in the hutch. If one
waddles off after a tasty-looking
weed, the other follows to eat half
of it. But the exact nature of their
closeness was not revealed to
any of us until, taking a hose out
back one morning to refill their
pool, I accidentally interrupted a
bout of enthusiastic tail-twisting.
After quickly retreating back
behind the fence, I realized
that watching would make me,
essentially, S1E1 Jenny, and I left
them in peace. Queer community
is everywhere.
