Chapter 2 – Plant Structures and Functions Lesson 1 – Vascular Plants What are vascular plants? • Vascular plants have tubes that carry water and nutrients up and down the plant. grass trees bushes What are vascular plants? • Parts of a vascular plant: – roots (anchor plant, take in food & water) – stems (support plant, move materials from roots to leaves) – leaves (make food) What are vascular plants? • Two kinds of vascular plants: 1. seedless plants: grow from a spore (a single cell that can develop into a new plant) ferns What are vascular plants? • Two kinds of vascular plants: 2. seed plants: make & grow from seeds (seed contains undeveloped plant and stored food in a protective coat) no flowers flowers Classifying Seed Plants • Two kinds of seed plants: 1. angiosperms: produce flowers 2. gymnosperms: do not produce flowers (seeds are produced inside a cone) What do flowers do? • Parts of a flower: – stamen (male part that produces pollen grains) – pistil (female part that produces egg cells) – ovary (bottom of pistil; stores egg cells) Parts of a Flower stamen (yellow tips are pollen grains) pistil ovary (bottom part of pistil) Seeds 1. pollination: movement of pollen grains from a stamen to a pistil by wind, insects, or birds 2. Pollen and an egg cell join and form a seed. Seeds 3. Seeds are scattered by wind or animals. All images courtesy of Microsoft Office Online.
