IACLEA Mile of Quarters Fundraiser

IACLEA Mile of Quarters Fundraiser
Did you know that it takes 12 quarters to equal a one foot
measurement?
The International Association of Campus Law Enforcement
Administrators (IACLEA) is proud to support the Law Enforcement
Torch Run, and one of the ways IACLEA members contribute to
the Torch Run is through the "Mile of Quarters" fundraiser.
Individuals, groups, and organizations on campuses are asked to
support the campaign by donating a quarter, a foot of quarters
($3), a yard ($9) or whatever they wish to help reach that
university's goal — a quarter, half or full mile.
There are 5,280 feet in a mile; it takes
63,360 quarters to equal one mile.

Those donating $25 or more are thanked publicly in ads that appear in the school newspaper.
"Feet" representing $3.00 of quarters are hung in a prominent spot on campus, written with the
names of individuals and campus organizations who have donated. By hanging the feet, the
university is able to see how many quarters are raised.

Items in the Mile of Quarters Packet
and What to Do With Them!
1. Feet!
A “foot” of quarters equals $3.00. These can either be cut out
as they are hung, or just hung the way they are.
If someone buys a foot, have them sign their name or write a
message on the foot. For those who just give quarters or dollars,
at the end of the day, count the money then hang feet for every
$3.00 of the loose change.
2. Press Release
We’ve just put together an article with the essentials in it. You will want to retype
on your stationary and fill in the material such as when this takes place and where
the feet will be hung for display. In the second paragraph, add some personal words
such as why you feel this is important for your department to do this.
3. Table tents
To announce your event and pique student and staff interest, put table tents in
areas where they eat. You will want to run off on stock paper, fold in half (there
are two tents per page), and set on tables. You’ll mostly likely need to get
permission to do this. We’ve given you a white sheet to use when running off, and an
example of tents on red paper.
4. Mailbox Stuffers
Announce your event by stuffing all organization and staff mailboxes with
announcements. Use colorful paper. We’ve given you white sheets of both a full
page and half page (two to a page).
5. Get Help
Enlist organizations on campus to staff your booth each day. You can use several
organizations to do this. They can also do the grunt work: stuffing mailboxes,
putting out the table tents, and any additional publicity.

[Identify Organization/Department] hoping to raise a quarter mile of
quarters
During the week of (give date), [give org/dept.] are seeking supporters for their Mile of
Quarters campaign. Money raised will be donated to your local Special Olympics. The
goal is to raise (17,180 quarters) which would be enough quarters to fill (one quarter
mile). Individuals, groups, and organizations on campus are asked to support the
campaign by donating a quarter, a foot of quarters ($3), a yard ($9) or whatever they wish
to help reach the goal. [All four campuses in the ______ Area will be competing at the
same time to see which campus can raise the most quarters.] Suggested campaign
“challenge” (quote why this is important to you and your officers to accomplish
your goal).
[Insert Name], Development Director of [Identify Area] Special Olympics says
that
Reaching the goal would mean a lot for the Special Olympics program. “The cost of
providing quality competition and training events for our [insert local numbers] athletes
on a year round basis is staggering,” says Sullivan. “When we raise money it covers the
costs of our programs, not our salaries so we hope the four universities will help support
our budget by providing the quarters to make a mile.”
Those donating $25 or more will be thanked publicly in a special ad to appear in
the school newspaper. Feet representing $3.00 of quarters will be hung (indicate
where). Names of individuals and campus organizations who have donated will be
written on the feet. By hanging the feet, the university will be able to see how many
quarters are raised.
Since its inception in 1968, Special Olympics has grown to include programs in
every state and throughout 151 countries. [Include some local statistics for your area SO
related to numbers of counties served, programs provided, athletes served, etc..] Besides
the obvious benefits of physical fitness, athletes become more self-sufficient and learn
tolerance and patience while being given the opportunity to receive the positive
recognition they so richly deserve.
