Psychoanalytic Forum DATE: TIME: Saturday, November 16, 2013 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. “Imaginary Gardens, Real Toads: On Memory and its Uses in the Analytic Process” Speaker: Theodore Jacobs, MD at the Baltimore Washington Center for Psychoanalysis 14900 Sweitzer Lane, Suite 102, Laurel, MD 20707 Theodore Jacobs, MD, is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Albert Einstein College of Medicine; New York University School of Medicine. He is also a Training and Supervising Analyst, New York Psychoanalytic Institute, New York University Psychoanalytic Institute. Additionally, Dr. Jacobs is a Child Supervising Analyst, New York University Psychoanalytic Institute, Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Medicine. Utilizing both literary and clinical examples, Dr. Jacobs takes up the current controversy over the place of different kinds of memory in analytic work. Taking issue with the recent emphasis on implicit memory as the sole aspect of memory that is mutative, Dr. Jacobs argues for and illustrates the essential roles that the recovery and re-living of memories, especially memories of emotionally traumatic experiences in childhood and adolescence, play in the healing process of analysis. Educational Objectives - After attending this Forum, participants should be able to: 1. Distinguish between memories that have a mutative effect and those that are intellectualized and ineffective. 2. Distinguish between implicit and declarative memories and understand the place of each in analytic work. 3. Identify the effect that the analyst’s own memories, and his or her handling, and use of them, is having on the analytic process. Like Us on Facebook!
