Raising Funds for New CT
Scanner at the Top of our List Visiting Clinics is a Priority
Beginning this week, a number of Outpatient Clinics at the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance –
Stratford General Hospital are operating in a new space.
In total, 14 different clinics are now located on the first floor of the West Building, instead of
being scattered throughout the hospital. This move means that patients will need to use the new
West Building Entrance, accessed from West Gore St., versus the Main Lobby Entrance.
“Relocating most of our outpatient clinics to the first floor of the West Building allows us to
improve flow and use of our resources,” says Anne Campbell, Vice President Partnerships & Patient
Experience. “This is more than just cosmetic; we are providing a smooth and streamlined outpatient
experience for our patients.”
Design of the area, using the existing building’s footprint, included detailed planning among
staff, physicians, volunteers, patients, family caregivers and administration.
“The goal of the planning team involved enhancing patient privacy, improving patient and staff
experience and fostering team-based collaboration,” adds Campbell.
Patients coming to Stratford General Hospital for the following outpatient appointments between
7:30 am and 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday, should enter through the West Building Entrance.
Each year our hospital performs some 11,700 CT Scans.

Upon entering the West Building patients will register at the newly relocated Patient Registration
which is right inside the door.
At 10 years old, our CT Scanner is rapidly aging. It spends an increasing amount of time
“down” for maintenance and replacement parts are becoming impossible to find—a serious
concern in emergency situations. And while the MRI can substitute in some instances, the
CT Scanner is often the best choice for imaging bone, soft tissue and blood vessels at the
same time. For some types of cancer imaging, chest examinations for issues like pulmonary
embolism and acute stroke imaging, the CT Scanner is our “go to” technology.
New CT Scanners are faster, more accurate and safer than scanners from just 10 years
ago, with 40-70% less radiation—an important feature for patients who require multiple CT
Scans.
“A CT Scanner is a standard—we couldn’t function without it. If it is down we
go on stroke bypass---to London. There is a narrow window of 4-5 hours to find the
clot causing the stroke. I think our most important piece of equipment is the CT
since it solves the most problems…it is our workhorse and our best diagnostic tool,”
says Dr. Keith Sparrow, Radiologist & SGH Foundation Board Member.
“Just how important is Medical Imaging? To me, working without it would be like
wearing a blindfold…Imaging is perhaps the most powerful tool we have to help
diagnose and detect numerous diseases and conditions,” says Dr. Laurel Moore, Chief of
Medical Staff.
