2013 Report - Alvin Community College

Alvin Community College Foundation
Annual Report
of Giving
2013
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends,
On behalf of the entire Alvin Community College Foundation Board, I would like to thank you
for your continued support throughout the year. The Foundation had another successful
year in 2013. Not only were more students provided support for their education, the
Foundation was also able to assist in more college programs and community events.
This year we were honored to host a Roast and Toast for Congressman Randy Weber.
Randy is an alumni of ACC and has been a great supporter to the college. That wonderful
evening raised $43,000 for ACC. Our Annual Gala was also another fabulous evening with
our “Caribbean Christmas” raising more than $38,000.
The Summer Concert Series at Alvin Live was a great success. Amber and the Old Rascals, Roger Creager and Mary Smith and
Mystique provided excellent music in a quaint, intimate venue. From the revenue of the concerts in 2013, the Communications
Department will offer $3,000 in additional scholarships.
This past year the Foundation also raised the bar on our grants to fund new programs at the college, while also donating $4,000
for Dual Credit Scholarships and $10,000 to scholarships for Workforce Development Programs. The Foundation had many
more success stories and accomplishments that you will read about in the next few pages.
Thanks to the support we receive from so many in our community, the Foundation has made a difference and will continue to
support and impact ACC in the coming year.
Looking forward to more success in 2014,

The Foundation provides support to the College in two forms: 1) scholarships to students, and 2) support for faculty and staff,
college programs and the community.
How the ACC Foundation Distributes, Utilizes Funds
SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED
Funds received from private donations are distributed in the
manner requested by the donor, if specified. If not specified,
the donation is allocated toward opportunity scholarships.
Funds raised during the annual events are divided in half – with
50 percent being used toward scholarships and 50 percent
toward faculty and staff development programs and community
enrichment projects.
ACC Foundation Awards $57,816 to Students in 2013

so it can be invested in a manner that will foster a cycle of
continued financial gain throughout the history of the college.
As the balance grows, so does the interest it accrues, which
means more scholarships can be made available to students
each year. ACC Foundation funds are maintained by RBC

AWARDS, GRANTS and WORKSHOPS
ACC Foundation Excellence Awards
TNMP Grant
The college has dedicated faculty and staff members who strive
to make ACC a great institution. The Foundation annually
recognizes a Technical, Support, Clerical and Maintenance
employee, an administrative staff employee and a faculty
member who excelled in their position.
Texas New Mexico Power issued a $10,000 grant to the
Foundation in order to establish energy conservation at the
college. The Foundation will use the funds to purchase and
install solar-powered safety lights along a portion of the 2-mile
jogging track located on campus.
The ACC Foundation Excellence Award winners are nominated by ACC employees and then selected by a committee. This
year’s honorees included Wendy Del Bello, Nancey Lobb and a
recipient who wished to remain anonymous.
Each recipient receives a plaque and $1,000. The goal of these
awards is to recognize individual staff members who have not
only achieved excellence in performance of their job over a
sustained period of time, but have also provided exemplary
service to the college and community. The ACC Foundation
hosts events each year to raise money for student scholarships
and these awards.
From left, ACC Foundation Executive Director Wendy Del Bello, TNMP
Community Liaison Linda Criner, Dean of Financial and Administrative
Services Karl Stager and Physical Plant Director Mark Putnam.
PLANNED GIVING
Winners of the 2013 ACC Foundation Excellence Awards are from left Wendy
Del Bello, Assistant to the President and Director of Development, Nancey Lobb,
Social Sciences Division Chair and Jay Hawkins, ACC Foundation President.
Giving Options for Education,
Community Supporters
TSCM Workshop
To help Technical, Support, Clerical and Maintenance employees
improve on their personal and professional lives, the Foundation sponsors the annual TSCM Workshop. The benefits from the
workshop also allows TSCM employees to improve their services
to ACC students and the community, as well as creating a team
environment. Started in 1992, the TSCM Workshop is the only
one of its kind among area community colleges. The Foundation
supports the workshop with a $500 grant.
In addition to supporting the ACC Foundation’s fundraising
events, there are numerous ways to make a difference and
invest in the community through the organization. Consider
the following:
 Create a Scholarship as a Gift or Memorial of a Loved One
 Make Donations in the Names of Friends and Relatives as Gifts
 Remember the ACC Foundation in Wills, Trusts, Life Insurance Policies or Gift Annuities
 Bequeath Property or Real Estate
 Donate Cash or Stocks
The ACC Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and all donations
to the ACC Foundation are tax deductible to the extent provided by law.

Support to the College
Innovative Initiative Grants
The Innovative Initiative grants were established in 2012 to
provide faculty and staff members an opportunity to pursue
projects to increase student success and create a positive
campus environment.
ACC Psychology instructor Dr. Jean Raniseski was
given $1,000 for her Peer Educators Program.
Distance Education Director Dena Coots, received
$750 for her ongoing project Reaching Further.
The Peer Educators Program helps distribute information to
ACC students about mental health and preventative health
issues. Peer Educators assisted in several outreach programs
that focused on suicide prevention, stress reduction, healthy
relationships, mental illness and prescription drug disposal.
Reaching Further
develops web
conference solutions
for remote training and
on-demand training for
faculty and students
that is available any
time over the Internet.
It also includes
customer support for
faculty, students and
future students.
Upward Bound Director Regan Metoyer received
$1,500 for student development.
Dual Credit Director Akilah Martin received $1,500 for
her Dual Credit Faculty/Teacher Orientation Program.
Upward Bound’s mission is to motivate low-income and/or
potential first-generation college students to achieve a postsecondary education. The Foundation grant made it possible for
the students to learn about environmental issues and expose
them to arts of different cultures.
Dual Credit enrollment is
growing rapidly at the five
area high schools served
by ACC. The Dual Credit
Faculty/Teacher Orientation
Program trained more than
100 Dual Credit instructors
on classroom expectations,
responsibilities, database
system information, class
technology needs and more.
4
Support to the College
The ACC Foundation also awarded three grants through the “Adopt a Grant” program which started in 2012. Guests at
the 2013 Christmas Gala were asked to support three different projects with $100 individual donations.
The Adopt a Grant funds went to Welding instructor
Laura Bell who received $1,500 for purchasing
equipment for welding students.
Drama chair, Dr. Jay Burton received $2,000 for the
annual Summer Children’s Theatre Festival.
The Summer Children Theatre Festival has given area children
the opportunity to produce and perform in a live play for 29
years. The festival has long been supported by grants from the
Foundation and was an Adopt A Grant recipient in 2013.
With a rapid growth of demand for welders, the ACC Welding
department is expanding instruction to several forms of
welding. The department purchased a Dial ARC 250 machine
to enhance its class laboratory.
Scholarships
The Foundation sponsored two scholarship funds in 2013.
Dwight Rhodes was awarded $1,700 for his ongoing
project Fresh Fruit for All.
The Dual Credit
program received
$4,000 to provide
scholarships to dual
credit students based
on need.
Fresh Fruit for All is a program that will help construct a
community garden on campus that, once finished, will cultivate
methods to help establish additional gardens. The Foundation
grant was used for the purchase of several varieties of fruit
trees as well as constructing a new storage shed for the garden.
This is the second year for this award.
The Workforce
Development
department also
received $10,000 to
support students with
financial need, as they
enter job training
programs at ACC.

Market Commentary
Period Ending December 31, 2013
A fourth-quarter surge capped off one of the strongest years for the U.S. stock market. Including dividends, the S&P 500 rallied 10.5% from October through December,
which contributed to the 32.4% total return for the year. That’s the strongest annual performance since 1997 and is 35% above the 2007 pre-financial crisis peak. On
a price-return basis, it was the 11th best year since 1926. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied 29.7% for the year with dividends. Among major markets, the U.S.
finished second behind Japan. Stocks had the wind at their backs as the housing market recovered, the economy withstood fiscal tightening and tax hikes, and the Federal
Reserve continued its unprecedented asset purchase program. Valuation expansion also contributed. The S&P 500 trailing 12-month price-to-earnings ratio jumped considerably to 17.4 from 14.3 in 2013. Investors were inclined to pay more for every dollar of earnings and overlook slower earnings growth because of reduced economic
risks and central banks’ willingness to backstop the global financial system. All 10 S&P 500 sectors rose for the year. Consumer discretionary, health care, and industrials
led, each rallying between 38%-41%, excluding dividends.
Partisan rancor in the U.S. Congress assured a rather inauspicious start to the 4th Quarter as an attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act - Obamacare - at the expense of
passing a Continuing Resolution to fund the Government resulted in a sixteen-day shutdown. This created much uncertainty, but in the end, agreements on both a Continuing Resolution and the Debt Ceiling were eventually reached. Economic activity showed continued signs of improvement and markets reacted accordingly with the yield
on the ten-year Treasury Note hitting a two-year high of 3.03% (up from 1.76% at the end of 2012). The improved economic outlook allowed the Federal Reserve to finally
announce at the December FOMC meeting they would start tapering their monthly Large Scale Asset Purchases (QE3) with an initial reduction of $10B scheduled for
January. This long-awaited and much discussed event did push long-term rates slightly higher, but overall the impact was limited, indicating investors had finally become
comfortable with the Fed’s “tapering is not tightening” message. Also softening the tapering message was “forward guidance” from the Fed that its current zero interest
rate policy (ZIRP) will likely remain in place well after their 6.50% threshold on the unemployment rate is reached.
