Governors Grant Piranhas – Swim Team 2015 Mission Statement

Governors Grant Piranhas – Swim Team 2015
Mission Statement – Help swimmers improve their skills, learn about competition, learn about teamwork, be
involved in their neighborhood community, make new friends, become lifelong swimmers, and have fun.
Swim Meets
B Meets – are designed to allow every swimmer to swim in every event. We encourage all swimmers to try
each stroke. Beginning swimmers should speak to lane coach or head coach to find out which strokes their
child is ready to compete. These are usually on Monday nights.
A Meets – Every swimmer will swim a minimum of 1 event. Coaches will try to place every swimmer in 2
events. Meet placement depends on times, technique (stroke legal), effort and participation in practice, team
we are competing against, number of swimmers attending the meet. These are usually on Thursday nights.
Piranha Website
This year the team will use ggswim.swim-team.us to handle registration, communications, RSVPing for meets,
and distribution of forms. In some cases the team will also use text messaging to advise families of last minute
changes or cancellations. The old Yahoo group will be used only in case of technical difficulties with this new
website and for some initial emails to advise/remind people of the switch to the new website. It is anticipated
this will be the last year the Yahoo group will be used.
Volunteer Hours
All families are required to sign up for 4 volunteer slots. There are a variety of different jobs and we need lots
of help to run meets and sign-ups for volunteering will be via the ggswim website (see above). Nicki Nickles is
the volunteer coordinator and volunteers will be checking in with her at the beginning of each meet. It is
extremely important to check in so we can have volunteers in place and the meet can start on time. If you do
not check in, you will not receive credit for your volunteer hours.
ELIGIBILITY
American Red Cross recommends children are at least 5 years old to begin on swim team. We recognize some
children are capable at age 4 and therefore, we will offer a swim test for capability from May 18th – May 21st
during afternoon practices. Swimmer must be 4 as of June 1st in order to try out. In order to maintain a safe
environment at the pool with coaching supervision, the swim team committee strongly recommends swim
lessons in advance to prepare for a more enjoyable and safer environment. All swimmers must be able to
swim the LENGTH of the pool INDEPENDENTLY and float on their back INDEPENDENTLY for 30 seconds in
order to participate in swim team (this includes all 6 & Under swimmers). New swimmers will be evaluated
during the stroke evaluations and practices beginning May 18th.
