Message from the Headmaster
“Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the
Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For
there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been
called to one glorious hope for the future.” Ephesians
4:3-4
We have such “glorious hope” for the future of St.
James Episcopal School. The academic year of
2013-2014 was a year of enthusiasm and challenge.
There was a lot of work to do. We began in July of
2013 with a series of positive transitions to help
rebuild St. James. From new curriculum, new faces,
and renewed direction, the campus was energized for
the new year. I want to thank all who welcomed me
and committed to our mission ahead. We have much
to celebrate!
Key transitions took place in the areas of curriculum,
strategic direction, and fostering a unified mission with
the Church of the Good Shepherd. These changes
made an impact on our enrollment, instilling
confidence and security in the community. As a result,
we enrolled 51 new scholars, some new to St. James
and others returning. With 50 scholars in Primary
School, 69 in Lower School, and 82 in Middle School,
we opened the doors with a total enrollment of 201.
The first cultural change we made was the transition
from “students” to “scholars”. Scholars are
enthusiastic learners who set goals, take time to
ponder, and think critically. All staff was trained in
questioning and thinking strategies utilizing the
Elements
of
Depth
and
Complexity
and
Interdisciplinary Instruction. This approach, designed
for the “gifted and talented,” teaches scholars in a way
that actually increases their brains' capacity, teaching
cognitive assets to increase their ability to think, learn,
and communicate well. Using these elements
encourages children to make connections to the
learning by building a bridge between their current
knowledge and their newfound knowledge. It is in
these connections where actual brain growth occurs,
and you learn, apply, and retain information to your
fullest potential.
We also added many faculty and staff members. I am
pleased to report that the new and current members are
working together beautifully, as “one body and one Spirit."
Our classroom teachers and aides are a dedicated group of
experienced professionals who are passionate about
providing a solid, high-level academic program, fostering
creativity and a thirst for knowledge in our scholars, rooted
in the Christian Faith.
The Board of Trustees, passionately led by Mr. Hoelt
Pohlmeier, also poured itself into activities supporting the
mission of the School. Under the direction of Dr. Faye
Bruun, a new strategic plan was launched. Mr. Tray Bates
and the Advancement Committee fostered increased parent
commitment to the Annual Fund drive and the Spring Fling
fundraiser, raising a combined total of $220,500. Most
significantly, the Board’s enthusiastic support, partnership,
and encouragement permeated every facet of the School.
A foundational change for me as an educator, moving from
37 years in public education, was the joy of joining in the
School’s mission with the Church of the Good Shepherd.
Fr. Milton and I heartily agree that strengthening the
connections and interactions between the Church and
School is essential to our success. The visibility of the
clergy in our classes is so beneficial and is a testament of
the growing, close relationship between the Church and
School. Through our spiritual formation classes and our
Chapel services, our scholars are given a wonderful
opportunity each week to discover and learn Christian
traditions, Episcopal liturgy, and gain valuable scriptural
insight.
I have been more than blessed by the great adventure of
joining St. James this past year. I am encouraged by the
growing, inquiring, curious, smiling faces that I see day to
day, asking questions in class, running on the playground,
and praying in Chapel. Daily, I pray for the community of
St. James, that we may make every effort to unite ourselves
in peace, and bind ourselves together for the good of our
children and our community, with one glorious hope for our
future. Thank you for a great year!

Major Grant
In June of 2014, St. James
received the news that the Ed
Rachal Foundation had awarded
the School a grant for $100,000
to renovate the seven classrooms
on the Water Street side of
campus. St. James immediately
contracted with South Texas
Building Partners to significantly
update the classrooms,
bathrooms, and hallways to
create the infrastructure for a
state of the art learning
environment. In two short
months, the classrooms were
ready for scholars on August 12,
2014 - the first day of school.
This renovation was essential to
accomodate our growth in
enrollment, up 20% from 2013 at
the start of school. With the
additional space, we have
increased the number of classes
in the Primary, PreKindergarten, and 2nd grade
levels.
We are exceptionally grateful to
the Ed Rachal Foundation for
their generosity. With their gift,
St. James is able to create a
premier space for scholars to
grow in knowledge, wisdom,
stature, and grace, becoming
leaders for tomorrow.
The Mission of St. James
Episcopal School is to develop
each child to his or her fullest
potential- spiritually,
intellectually, and physically that each child may grow in
grace, enjoy freedom through
knowledge, and lead a healthy,
productive and meaningful life.
