CHANGING THE WAY THE WORLD
LOOKS AT IRIS RECOGNITION
The AOptix InSight ™ 2 Meter Iris Recognition System
Promise of Iris Recognition Fulfilled
InSight™ SD
Iris recognition is emerging as the biometric of choice for
high-confidence authentication, but until now the modality has been
limited by usability challenges of conventional iris imaging systems,
which can only be deployed at short ranges and require considerable
effort by the subject.
The InSight™ iris recognition systems from AOptix Technologies, with their exclusive
Adaptive Optics approach to automated iris imaging, enables unprecedented stand-off
distances, usability, speed and image quality that are unachievable with conventional
iris cameras. The resulting improvements in throughput, user comfort, and matching
accuracy now fulfill the promise of this remarkable biometric modality.
A breakthrough in human factors design, the InSight makes enrollment and
authentication an effortless process. The InSight system redefines ease of use
and image quality – not only for the iris recognition modality but for biometrics
in general.
Operating at a nominal stand-off distance of 2 meters, the InSight is ideal for a wide
variety of government, military, and commercial applications including enrollment,
authentication and access control.
The AOptix InSight is available in two versions:
• The InSight SD is a single box design that is transportable and readily mounted
on walls.
• The new InSight VM is an elegant and slim tower that is ideal for access control,
immigration and eGate installations.
Both systems are identical in functionality, software and network interfacing.

Effortless Human Factors
Redefining Biometric Usability
The InSight’s groundbreaking human factors invert the traditional man-machine interface
paradigm. Subjects facing the system merely position themselves anywhere within the
extraordinary 0.75 cubic meter capture zone, and open their eyes for a brief time. There’s
no need to provide detailed instructions and no learning curve to use the system.
Effortless Interface
Intelligent System
While the operating distance is nominally 2 meters, the system actually features an
unprecedented capture range of one full meter, working at any distance from 1.5 to 2.5
meters. At mid-plane, the capture zone is .75 meters wide and 1.0 meter tall, providing
outstanding subject positioning flexibility. This means that at 2 meters stand-off distance,
the system can handle a full range of heights from subjects in wheelchairs to very tall.
Virtually all subjects are able to position themselves appropriately without effort.
Instruction Set Simplicity
The instruction set consists of straightforward commands, easily followed by first time
users. It is: stand here, look at the device, open your eyes.
Auto Face and Iris Finding
The subject’s cooperative task mainly consists of “open your eyes” – and to move on
when the process is complete. This results in more consistent imaging, lower Failure-toEnroll (FTE) and Failure-to-Acquire (FTA) rates, and higher system throughput and
productivity in both recognition and enrollment modes.
Automated functionality
The on-board face detection software automatically determines if there is a person in the
capture zone, enabling the system to operate in fully autonomous mode. Image capture
and authentication instantly follow, making the system perfectly suited for high throughput
or queuing dependant applications without requiring operator involvement.
Operating Range – 1.5 m to 2.5 m
Speed and high throughput
The entire process is very fast. It typically takes about 2 seconds for the system to deliver
a single qualified iris image from the time the subject enters the capture volume and looks
at the system.
Large Capture Zone
Superior Imaging Improves Accuracy
New Standard for Iris Biometric Imaging
With its innovative Adaptive Optics approach, the AOptix InSight
system captures more of the rich iris detail than other imagers.
Captured iris images are always centered and focused, and
exceed the current ISO standard for modulation transfer function
(MTF), the best measurement of optical and digital image quality.
For irises of all sizes, the system will exceed all current ISO pixel
count specifications for iris biometric imaging at any stand-off
distance throughout the system’s operating range.
Uniform Iris Image Size
The InSight features a patent pending “zoom” design that
delivers constant magnification at any stand-off distance within
the capture volume. This enables all algorithms to deliver higher
accuracy compared to iris data bases with varying iris sizes from
the same subject.
Optimizing Subject Image Quality
The InSight employs a real-time image quality metric that
indicates if image acquisition should be repeated. The speed
and simplicity of reacquiring an acceptable image encourages
setting image quality metric thresholds high, thereby improving
overall accuracy results.
Enrollment and Authentication Versatility
The combination of the InSight system’s extraordinary usability
and imaging performance makes it ideal for large scale
enrollment programs, or high volume and high security
authentication applications, performing well in either 1:1
or 1:N matching modes.

BORDER SECURITY
The InSight has been designed using open standards
to support system integration with the greatest level
of customer choice.
IP CONNECTIVITY
The InSight is a true network appliance: it has a configurable
IP address that can be managed via an embedded web-based
control panel. Most importantly, it communicates through a
secure Ethernet connection via SOAP, an open standard for web
services, over HTTPS.
On-board encoding and matching
The InSight’s powerful processor enables the system to
support optional on-board encoding and matching for up to
10,000 locally stored template sets.
Platform Interoperability
The InSight system captures and transmits images that meet
or exceed the ISO 19794-6 standards for rectilinear iris image
format and image quality.
Integration Tools
A versatile software development kit (SDK) is available for use
in application development and integration for the InSight.
Developed to take advantage of the SOAP web services
protocol, and targeted at enabling rapid bring-up in an IP-based
environment, the SDK includes a well documented WSDL file and
C programming language API, as well as a demo application with
image capture, enrollment, and identification functionality.
Algorithm Choice
The AOptix InSight can be configured to include either the
proprietary AOptix encoding and matching algorithm, or any
customer selected algorithm compatible with the ISO 19794-6
iris image format and quality standard.
Physical Access Control System (PACS) Interface
Wiegand and RS-485 hardware and software interfaces for
integration with standard access control panels and card
readers are optional, enabling configuration for tokenless
environments and Wiegand-based “prox” and smart card
infrastructures.
