Spelling Homework

HOMEWORK LIST – Weeks 2 through 10
DIRECTIONS: Use your current week’s spelling words to complete the correct homework assignment
for each week. Write your work on a separate piece of paper. (Each assignment is worth 10 points.)
WEEKS 2, 5, and 8:
“AWESOME ALLITERATION” – Alliteration is the repetition of beginning sounds in words.
For this assignment, write ten alliterative sentences (“tongue twisters”), with each sentence
including one of your spelling words. Underline the spelling words.
EXAMPLE:
Spelling word: bazaar
Alliteration: Betty and Bob brought back blue balloons from the big bazaar.
(Hint: Every word doesn’t have to start with the same letter/sound, but many should in order to count as alliteration.)
Benchmark assessed: Understand how writers and speakers choose words and use figurative language (D.1.3)
WEEKS 3, 6, and 9:
SENTENCE WRITING - Write ten sentences using your spelling words. Each sentence will
contain one of your spelling words. (You will not use two of the words on your list.)
Underline the spelling words. Make sure the content of the sentence shows that you
understand what the word means. Also, make sure that you write in complete sentences,
especially paying attention to correct capitalization and punctuation.
Benchmark assessed: Understands and uses appropriate sentence structure (B.3.1)
WEEKS 4, 7, and 10:
WORD REFERENCE (Synonyms, Antonyms, and Definitions) –
 Using a thesaurus, write down a synonym and antonym for at least 5 of your words.
Synonyms are words that have the same meaning (example: “look” and “stare”). Antonyms
are words that are the opposite of each other (example: “light” and “dark”). Try to
organize your assignment in columns, like the example below:

Then, using a dictionary, write down the definitions for 5 of your spelling words. (Be sure
to include the part of speech: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc.)
(Hint: If you’re working on this outside of class, and don’t have access to a print dictionary or thesaurus, try an online dictionary/thesaurus like
www.merriam-webster.com or www.dictionary.reference.com)
