 25 Year Celebration in 2014 will include:
o Anniversary Pledge – The “Don’t” Fun-raiser, things that you don’t have to do but can support the
organization. This pledge will incorporate the sports offered by AzDS and will be mailed to all
database including athletes, parents, volunteers, and partner organizations.
o “Then, Now & Beyond” Celebration to incorporate the Hohokam Foundation and potentially host a
hoedown to remember where we started and how far we have come.
o 25 Year Anniversary Logo – design options available for review
o 25 Year Anniversary Banner for display at all events in 2014
o Strategic plan in January to review our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and set our 5
year, 10 year and 25 year goals for AzDS.
Executive Director’s Report – Lane Gram
 Turkey Trot fundraiser with Bush Elementary School was a big success! Majority of children wore pink to
honor Ms. Stephanie. Buster the Bulldog and Team Mesa athletes supported the runners from each class
level. Pledges were collected through December 6th. Report on total raised to follow.
 The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has accepted the bid from AzDS to incorporate the IPC
Athletics Grand Prix with the annual Desert Challenge Games from May 9-11, 2014.
 Re-submitted a bid to the US Power Soccer Association to host the Premier Conference Cup at Inspire
Courts AZ in Gilbert in June 2014. Working with Holiday Inn on US60/Country Club as potential host hotel.
 Working with new ski school instructor at Sunrise Ski Park to set new rates for SkiAble program. Event
registration is ready and waiting on the confirmation of the prices available to our group.
 25 Year Celebration ideas with President – review of logo and Anniversary pledge materials soon.
 Hosting 10 teams at the Arizona JV Wheelchair Basketball Tournament as the West Coast Bid Regional on
Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15.
 Hosting Holiday Bowling Tournament on Saturday, December 14 from 12-2pm and incorporating the end of
season kayak party into the event.
 Meeting with the Arizona Youth Soccer Association (AYSA) on December 11th to discuss potential
partnership and support ideas for AYSA to Power Soccer program.
 Brain Injury Support Group hosted a small fundraiser with raffle prizes and donations to support the adaptive
programs of AzDS. The group estimated to rasie $1,000 at the event with just over 100 people.
 Birdies for Charity for MASD began on Friday, December 6th and will solicit pledge donations through the
Waste Management Phoenix Open from Jan 27-Feb 2. Anyone can make a pledge!
 Updated the Policy and Procedure Manual and created a new Student Intern Manual for AzDS. The student
intern manual requires a 16-week internship which I feel is appropriate for students to be involved with the
organization for an entire season (minimum requirement from ASU is 14 weeks).
Program Report (Physically Challenged programs) – Nina Bernardo
 Program Registration: Kayaking – 9, Short Distance Cycling – 16, Long distance cycling – 3, Bowling – 16,
Wheelchair Basketball – 20, Power Soccer – 18
 Attended Adaptive Team Meeting with the City of Mesa and took notes how they carry out registration
with such large number of athletes vs. registration with PC athletes.
 Hosted a Winter/Spring Coach meeting on Tuesday, November 12th to brainstorm new ideas for a kickoff of the new season. RE: 1st Annual SportsFest





Received CEU's at the ASTRA Conference on Friday, November 15th
Requested a Coach meeting with Power Soccer on Wednesday, November 20th to revamp the number of
athletes on the three teams
Mentoring an Eagle Scout on his leadership project with the Run, Walk & Roll. Giving him
responsibilities to assist the Volunteer Coordinator prior and on event day.
Six athletes completed the El Tour de Tucson on Saturday, November 23rd. 1 - 5 mile rider and 5 - 38
mile riders. It was wet and cold, but they were all successful in their goals; Two rookies!
Cheered on Bush Elementary as they Turkey Trotted around their school in honor of Team Mesa's
Coach Stefanie. Pledges were taken to help raise funds for AzDS.
Program Report (Team Mesa Adaptive programs) – Mark Grant
 Program Registration: Soccer– 36, Bowling West – 84, Bowling East – 74, Bowling Jr – 5, Bowling
Unified – 28, Golf – 66, Floor Hockey – 25, Basketball Unified – 25, TGIF - 80.
 The annual Four Peaks Area Bowling Tournament was held Friday, November 15th and Saturday,
November 16th at the Brunswick Zone-Mesa. Session Times on Friday were 10:30am and Saturday at
9:30am, 12:30pm & 3:30pm. Awards were presented on the lanes as the athletes finished their last
game, which not only brought many positive comments but it also sped up the process of giving out
awards. It definitely cut down the amount of running. This year there 583 bowlers from Mesa,
Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, and Apache Jct., Phoenix, Cave Creek, Queen Creek, Paradise Valley and
Maricopa participated in this tournament.
 From Nov 1-3, 66 Mesa golfers attended this year’s SOAZ Golf Tournament at Vistal Golf Course in
Phoenix. Once again, the golf tournament was headed up by Mesa’s very own golf coach Greg Leicht
this was a truly a first class PGA event. Mesa’s golf program continues to be the leader in participation
and quality of coaching. This year there was a fireworks show at the conclusion of the ceremonies.
 Mesa Unified Basketball Program started on Wednesday, November 13th at the Jefferson Recreation
Center 25 athletes and partners were in attendance. Practices are held on Mondays and Wednesdays
from 7:00-9:00pm.
 The Mesa Floor Hockey program started up on Tuesday, November 5th at the Broadway Recreation
Center with 25 athletes in attendance. Practices are held from 6:30-8:00pm. Mesa will compete in the
Regional Floor Hockey Tournament held in Flagstaff on January 17th, 18th and 19th.
 The Adaptive cooking class began on Monday, November 4th. It is held at Stapley Jr. High on Mondays
from 6:00pm-8:00pm. We have 10 participants in this class. Some of the dishes that have been cooked
are; spaghetti, soup and sandwiches, turkey dinner and fish tacos. Kitchen Safety and nutrition were also
discussed at the first class.
 TGIF went to Amazing Jakes with 80 participants attending. Participants enjoyed the food buffet,
climbing wall, laser tag, bowling and of course the Go Karts! Great time was had by all!
 The annual Disneyland Adventure Trip sponsored by the City of Mesa and the City of Chandler was
held on November 20-22nd. 69 participants and 18 staff and 1 nurse attended this trip. Participants went
to Universal Studios on Thursday and Disneyland on Friday. In spite of a little bit of rain on Friday, a
great time was had by all! The new disability pass worked out just fine for us due to the fact there
weren’t a lot of people at Disneyland. Jacquie did a very nice job the trip ran very smooth.
 Adaptive Soccer is practicing on Wednesdays at Hohokam for the Area Soccer tournament to be held on
December 7th in Queen Creek. We have 36 participating each week.
 The adaptive Holiday Card making class began on Wednesday, November 6th at the Broadway
Recreation Center at 6:00pm-7:00pm. We have 5 participants enrolled. They are making cards to give to
friends and family.
 New Four Peaks Area Director – Tony Miller – Team Mesa will have lunch to meet Tony and discuss
the Mesa programs and events in hopes of starting off on the right foot this time.

 2014 event at Tempe Beach Park on Saturday, January 11th, 2014.
 Board member pledge of support indicates that they will either 1) volunteer at the event, 2) participate in the
event or 3) donate to the event. Which area will you support? Nina is sending out an online sign up form to
mark your commitment.
 Met with Narthex Youth Club to support the RWR event and develop a partnership agreement for $5 per
volunteer, $5 per registrant and 50% of sponsorships that they recruit.
