A message from
The Dancing Bird of Paradise
Your child will soon read “The Dancing Bird of Paradise,” a selection about a
young girl named Haruno who grows up studying traditional Japanese dances. Haruno
spreads the culture of Japan to many people around America and entertains her fellow
Japanese Americans while they live in internment camps during World War II.
After your child has finished reading “The Dancing Bird of Paradise,” you may
want to talk about the Japanese styles of dance that Haruno studies in Japan. Many
ideas and images can be conveyed without using words. Have your child compose a
dance in which a story is told with no words. Instead, have him or her use movement
to express the story. He or she may also incorporate drawings to express images in
the story. After your child finishes performing his or her dance, try to guess the story
which he or she told.

Selection Vocabulary

review the meanings of these words with your child: kimono—a loose robe that is
tied with a sash; phonograph—an instrument that reproduces sound from records;
startled—excited by sudden surprise or alarm; internment—confined or impounded,
especially during a time of war; barrack—providing temporary housing, very plain and
uniform; sweltered—past tense of swelter: to suffer, sweat, or become faint from heat;
ascend—to climb; donned—past tense of don: to put on; soloed—past tense of solo: to
dance or perform alone; enrich—to make better by adding something.
Spelling
Your child will study the following spelling words in the upcoming week. Please review
the spellings of these words with your child: enrich, unpleasant, endanger, enable,
uninspired, unlikely, encompass, unmarked, enlarge, ungrateful, encode, enlighten,

Pronto su hijo(a) leerá “The Dancing Bird of Paradise”, una lectura sobre una niña
