Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers
✔ An improper fraction has
a numerator that is greater
than its denominator.
✔ First, divide the improper
fraction’s numerator by
its denominator. The
quotient should be a whole
number, and there may
be a remainder. If there
is a remainder, write it
over the original fraction’s
denominator.
✔W
rite that fraction to the
right of the whole-number
part of the quotient.
Example: Say a recipe calls
for !3 cup of cheese. If you
multiply the recipe by 5,
you have %3 cup. Change that
number to a mixed number so
you can measure the cheese
more easily:
5 ÷ 3 = 1 R2
We write that as 1@3 cups.
