An Update from the Founder
November 15th, 2013 marked the
16th Anniversary of the official
opening of Ian Anderson House.
For these past sixteen years our
hospice has undergone many
changes and improvements which
were based on our day-to-day experiences. We have streamlined the
necessary administrative paperwork
and made structural changes to
improve the efficiency and smoothrunning of the hospice which allows
the staff to spend the necessary time
with our residents. After the Eastern
Seaboard major power failure in
2003 we had a generator installed to
ensure the safety of all in the House,
which has since been used frequently. All of these changes were made
after much discussion with our staff
and with careful consideration by
our board members. All were subsequently made based on the needs,
comfort and safety of our residents,
families and staff.
One of our long-term goals which
is, in fact, an integral part of the philosophy of hospice and palliative
care, was the creation of a resource
centre to address the needs of
caregivers in our community. We
15th Anniversary Celebration
officially opened the Ian Anderson
Resource Centre in May 2004 which
was made possible by a generous
grant from our longtime supporter,
the Donner Canadian Foundation.
The Centre was originally
designed to provide advocacy, information and practical resources for
those who are caring, at home, for a
family member who has been
diagnosed with a terminal illness. In
2008 the Centre designed a Caregiver’s Toolkit, funded by the
Ontario Trillium Foundation, which
is a repository of practical resources
and information to assist caregivers
providing end-of-life care in their
homes. To-date, more than 2500 of
our toolkits, which have been used as
a model to develop similar resources
in parts of Ontario, Canada and the
United States, have been distributed
in Peel and Halton and an estimated
1000 more will be printed and distributed in 2014.
Palliative care, as a medical
specialty, had in the past been much
neglected in Canada as compared to
other countries around the world.
Today, while more attention is
paid to the palliative care field it is
St. Andrews Pipes & Drums
Annual
Newsletter
2013
basically focused on end-of-life and
pain and symptom management.
However, with current demographics and the reality of our aging
population, palliative care should,
and must, include all those with
chronic longterm illnesses. We must
also be concerned about the health
and wellbeing of the caregivers who
are providing the necessary care in
their homes perhaps to a family
member with Alzheimer’s disease.
In the near future we plan to
expand the focus of the IARC to
include necessary support to those
longterm family caregivers by
researching and working with the
community organizations that
already provide needed services and
hopefully to attempt to fill any gaps
that may currently exist in our
healthcare systems.
As always we are very grateful for
and sincerely thank all those whose
generous support has made it
possible for us to provide quality care
to almost 1700 residents in the past
sixteen years.

A Tribute to Our Volunteers
Our volunteers are a valuable and essential part of our Ian
Anderson House “care team” who allow our staff to spend the necessary time
caring for residents. All who apply are interviewed and subsequently receive
“in house” training that is tailored to the day-to-day functioning of the hospice.
Our volunteers answer telephone calls, greet visitors, prepare meals and snacks
for residents and perform light household and administrative tasks.
An important role for our volunteers is to familiarize visiting families with the
mechanical functions and safety features of the House. They are also needed to spend
time, perhaps in our kitchen, with families to chat or, more important, to listen.
We are also very grateful to those dedicated volunteers who not only volunteer in
the House but who offer their time to help at our annual and at “third party”
fundraising events.

with Thanks and
Best Wishes to:
Phyllis joined us in the summer of 2009. She had heard
about Ian Anderson House from a friend and decided to apply
as a volunteer. She had volunteered at West Oak Village during
and after her Mother was a resident there and currently also
volunteers at the Credit Valley Chemo Clinic.
Phyllis is in the hospice on Wednesday afternoons and
evenings and volunteers her help, not only at our fundraisers,
but also at third-party events. She feels that her life “has been
enriched” by her many experiences at IAH and is “proud to be
a part of our first-class caregiving hospice”.

Our Staff
To learn more about
Louise Morgan, PSW
Ian Anderson House
Louise first came to Ian Anderson House in 1997 when she
was employed by Halton Red Cross as a Home Support Worker.
From that time until the year 2000 she also had extensive
employment experiences with The Children’s Aid Society as a
social worker. Louise describes herself as being required to
manage her busy schedule, at that time, with “discipline and
humour”.
Louise joined Ian Anderson House in 2001 and has become
a dedicated and untiring member of our “care team”.
Each year we receive many cards and letters from families of
our residents who express their appreciation, not only for the
care provided by our staff to the family member who is a
resident, but also for the empathy and care shown to the family. Louise and our staff and
volunteers understand and instinctively offer those acts of kindness to help families through
a very difficult time.

who joined us on April 3, 2013.
Heidi was formerly Manager of Volunteer Services and Programmes at reBoot
Canada and a consultant for volunteer functions at an organization located in
Brampton. This past year she has also served as a volunteer on committees at St.
Joan of Arc and other schools.
Heidi has a Fundraising and Volunteer Management Certificate from George
Brown College and is currently undertaking additional Microsoft courses at
Sheridan College.
We all welcome Heidi as a new member of our Ian Anderson House “care team”.

Remembering . . .
Betty Smith
We were very saddened, in August of this year, to
learn of the death of Betty Smith who was a longtime
volunteer at our hospice. Betty, who manned the
reception desk and telephone, greeted callers warmly and
professionally and chatted with family members and
friends who were waiting to visit a resident. She will be
sadly missed by her family and by all who knew her.
To: Tim Horton’s for their generous ongoing supply of coffee;
Voortmans Cookies Ltd. who regularly donate cookies to the
“House”; Reunion Island coffee for their ongoing donation of
specialty coffees; Rochester Midland who donate cleaning
products as needed; Ian Angell who donated 2 pallets of
disinfecting/cleaning supplies; HIROC Insurance volunteers
for the Spring cleanup of our gardens; Tzu Chi Foundation
volunteers for the Fall garden cleanup; South Peel Naturalists
who provide donations each year to purchase birdseed for our
feeders; Ren’s Pet Depot for their ongoing donation of birdseed
for our feeders; Bloom 84 Flower Shop who regularly donate
flower arrangements for our house; DG’s Greenhouses who
donated flowers, in the spring and fall, for our gardens;
Connon Nurseries for their donation of cedars and Canadian
hemlocks; Elizabeth Chenier who regularly donates her time
and expertise designing flyers and programmes for our
fundraising events.
Marjorie Stacey
Marjorie, a longtime volunteer, was always pleasant
and kind to our residents and their families. Her
specialty sausage rolls, which were home baked, were
always a big hit at Ian Anderson House. Marjorie, who
died last August, was a very special lady, who will be
much missed.
Once again, we are very grateful, not only to those mentioned above, but to the families who asked that in
memoriam donations be made to Ian Anderson House and to all the individuals, businesses and organizations
who held events, donated gift cards or asked that donations be made to Ian Anderson House in lieu of birthday,
anniversary or wedding gifts.

Ian Anderson House Golf
Tournament 2013
Our golf tournament
was held this year on a
beautiful
September
23rd day at the Indian
Wells Golf Club. Our
sincere thanks, once
again, to owner Mr. Ed
Liptay for donating his
beautiful golf course in
support of our hospice.
We are also grateful to
those who sponsored
the event and to everyone who donated prizes for the
winning teams, for individual players and for our
raffle. As always, a special thanks to John Zoppas for,
as he does each year, collecting and donating so many
of the prizes. The 112 golfers who came in support of
Ian Anderson House enjoyed a day of good weather,
good food and good fun. P.S. Congratulations to my
grandson Matthew for winning a prize for “closest to
the hole” again this year.
In 2005 the Ontario Ministry of Health provided
some nursing and support services to IAH.
However, in order to provide the quality and level
of professionally trained staffing that is necessary
and should be expected in an appropriate natural
setting and a “House” that is comfortable,
comforting and safe we must currently raise
approximately $700,000 annually.
We are very grateful to all the family and friends
of our residents who participate or support our
Annual events.

In Appreciation of the supporters of IAH
We sincerely thank all those who have made donations to Ian Anderson House since the publication of our
Annual 2012 Newsletter. Although we are unable, due to the lack of space, to list the name of every donor, we
are very grateful to all whose generosity makes it possible for us to continue to offer our much-needed service to
families who are no longer able to provide the necessary 24 hour care to a loved one in their own homes.

A Profile of a Supporter of IAH
Marie José Overweel
Marie José Overweel has generously supported Ian Anderson House
for the past 13 years, beginning with a sponsorship to our Garden made
in memory of her nephew. She has been a major sponsor and a
participant at our fundraising events and donates an anniversary gift
to our Hospice each November.
Marie José’s husband, Jan, died of prostate cancer in 2001 in Credit
Valley Hospital and since that time she has included the hospital among
many charities that she supports. This past year she was prominently
featured in the Globe and Mail newspaper for co-funding a one million
dollar Grant toward the campaign for the inclusion of future robotic
surgery in the hospital. The newspaper article stated that since her
husband’s death Marie José has donated almost two million dollars in total to Credit Valley hospital.
Marie José describes herself as someone who “loves to give” and we are very grateful and sincerely thankful that she has chosen to include Ian Anderson House among her many philanthropic
endeavours.
