Property Outlook liftout P15-50 Raging in the rain P63 Northern Outlook Wednesday, March 15, 2017 NORTH CANTERBURY’S BEST READ COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER SIREN SHOCKERS COMMUNITIES REPORTERS Waiau Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Hugh Wells reckons about half of motorists know just what to do when they see the sirens coming. The other half either slam on the breaks or just plain ignore the issue. ‘‘We had one just a year or so ago ... we were going to a fire and we were coming up behind a vehicle, lights and sirens going. They finally realised we were behind them and chucked the anchors on and almost caused their own crash,’’ Wells said. This and other examples came to light as part of an investigation by Fairfax community reporters in Canterbury, Otago and Southland into motorists’ reactions when emergency service vehicles used their sirens and flashing lights. Examples of poor behaviour include police cars being stuck for several kilometres behind motorists unaware of their presence and drivers panicking and risking their lives by running red lights in the mistaken belief they are ‘helping’ emergency service drivers. There have also been recent instances of motorists driving through potentially serious crash sites, and foreign drivers seemingly ignorant of the road rules relating to emergency vehicles. During the Hanmer Fires, Wells said stopped traffic queued on the way to the Lewis Pass was summarily unhelpful while traffic coming towards the firefighters moved over to let them through. As did most motorists driving towards emergency service vehicles under lights and sirens. ‘‘They’d shut the road and we had to come through ... but the traffic we were behind were like ‘what, we’re stopped, what do you want us to do?’ We had lights and sirens going and people weren’t moving, it was quite surprising.’’ After police moved traffic further to the roadside, Wells said the fire engines could fit through the gap in the middle of the road. ‘‘If you’re stopped in a queue, if you pull over to the left as much as [safely] possible, there’s usually enough room to get through. You only have to slow and move to the side of the road somewhere safe ... slamming on your anchors isn’t going to help.’’ Rakaia chief volunteer fire officer Tyrone Burrowes said the brigade was going to a two-car crash at the Chertsey rail crossing recently. ‘‘We had one car who wouldn’t pull over. It was a foreign driver and we had to overtake them. He wasn’t reacting to the lights or the sirens.’’ Christchurch metro area fire commander Dave Stackhouse said in-car distractions and motorists blithely unaware of what was going on around them was an ongoing frustration for crews heading to emergencies. ‘‘By far the majority of people are not checking their rear vision mirrors. If they are not checking, and the music is up high, it only frustrates emergency teams,’’ he said. Acting North Canterbury police commander, Sergeant Anna Lloyd, said a couple of minutes could make all the difference when police cars, fire engines or ambulances responded to emergencies. ‘‘We do not drive under lights and siren to every incident, so if we are it will be important. It could be your family member or best friend that we are trying to get to, so please make it as easy for us as possible.’’ She said she was ‘‘regularly amazed’’ by drivers being completely oblivious to the fact that she was behind them, lights flashing and sirens wailing ‘‘full noise’’. ‘‘I cannot stress enough how important it is to always remain vigilant when you are driving. Don’t have the music up so loud that you cannot hear any approaching sirens. And do not panic – or put yourself at risk to try and get out of the way.’’ ❚ Continued page 3 31st March 2017. Although I was introduced in the paper at the start of the year, I ended up continuing to report for the Kaikoura Star until last week. So after a rather hectic 10 weeks travelling the dusty highway back and forth on a weekly and sometimes thrice weekly basis to cover Kaikoura’s news, my life is taking a turn for the calmer and I am very much looking forward to settling properly in Rangiora. This will not only be more relaxing for me but also for my family, and I am sure in time (once I figure out what I am doing) my ‘new’ colleagues. It’s great to finally join the team and I can’t wait to get stuck in to some community news, so please contact me with any stories you’d like me to cover. I look forward to hearing from you, Have a great week, Emma. This newspaper is subject to NZ Press Council procedures. From April 1 there will be no letter deliveries or mail pick-ups on Saturdays for rural customers who are currently on a six-day delivery, although parcels and subscription newspapers will continue to be delivered. A New Zealand Post spokesperson said the rural areas covered on Saturday delivery runs would vary depending on what parcels and subscription papers were being delivered. It would not be fair to deliver mail to some customers and not to others in those areas, the spokesperson said. NZ Post was given the flexibility by the Government to move to five day delivery in rural areas in 2013, however only about a quarter of customers saw a change to the service in that time, with the remainder continuing to enjoy Saturday deliveries. Chief operating officer Mark Stewart said the latest move was inevitable due to the drop in letters, with rural delivery letter volumes having decreased by a quarter in the last four years com- pared to a 23 per cent increase in parcel volumes in the same period. The decline in postal deliveries is something of a chicken and egg scenario, with far fewer people opting for the traditional pen and paper in favour of modern technology. Letter volumes in both rural and urban areas have virtually halved in the past decade – in 2006, more than a billion letters went through the network compared with 578 million in the year to June 2016. During 2016 letter volumes declined by approximately 8 per cent, a rate of about 60 million items a year, an annual loss in revenue of about $30m. The company held off moving to five day letter delivery for rural customers for as long as possible, however the continuing decline in letter volumes meant six day letter delivery was no longer sustainable. ‘‘We’re continuing to work hard to bring new business on board to maintain a commercially viable rural network for us and our contractors, and to give our rural customers the best possible service,’’ Stewart said. ‘‘We need rural delivery to be in good shape for the future.’’ Lights, sirens . . . panic? North Canterbury Milk is the brainchild of Natalie Gillespie and midwives Gill Smith and Jackie Snowden. The non-profit breast milk donation scheme collected breast milk from women who expressed excess milk after pregnancy and distributed it to local babies. ‘‘Some women for no apparent reason just don’t produce enough milk, while others have medical conditions; some have had a breast reduction or have polycystic ovary syndrome,’’ Smith said. The Ministry of Health recommends that babies are exclusively breastfed until aged six months as it forms a protective layer in a newborn’s gut, contains essential enzymes and antibodies and boosts immunity. Gillespie called it ‘‘liquid gold’’. ‘‘Formula is OK but it’s not as good as breast milk, so if they can access breast milk from another source, that is going to be a lot more beneficial for the baby’’, Smith said. Potential milk donors would Natalie Gillespie and son Billy with donations to North Canterbury Milk. SUPPLIED undergo extensive blood screening and review of their medical history before being allowed to donate. The breast milk was pumped into sterile containers for storage. Within three days of opening for donation, they had screened 10 women, had three women donate and three women collect donated milk. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Christchurch Hos- pital had a breast milk donor bank, however to be eligible for donated milk a newborn must be admitted to the unit or meet a strict criteria. Gillespie produced excess milk following her second pregnancy and midwife Jackie Snowden distributed this to clients at her practice who were experiencing issues breast feeding. Gillespie has since donated short term to around 20 local fam- ilies. A local mother to whom Gillespie donated last year said it was the most wonderful gift someone could give. ‘‘The need is there, it’s just getting it to the point that it’s quite normal, quite natural and easy to ask for,’’ Gillespie said. It could be extremely frustrating and upsetting for mothers, Gillespie said, to sit on a pump for hours and not produce any milk, especially when they were already under so much stress with a newborn. The milk was being stored in a freezer at Gillespie’s home which she noted ‘‘wasn’t ideal’’, while she had also been lending out her own breast pumps and equipment to donors. The women were seeking sponsorship and equipment donations but said the key was really getting the word out. ‘‘We are here, ready and waiting and if you have milk for us, we will take it.’’ Gillespie said. ‘‘We’re hoping we can get such a supply that we can help any woman who needs it.’’ For further information, visit www.facebook.com/ northcanterburyMILK or northcanterburymilkblog.wordpress.com. Christchurch ReadyMix has applied to renew its resource consent for an existing quarry near the site of the contentious proposed Isaac Rd quarry in Eyrewell Forest. A Waimakariri District Council (WDC) spokesman said this was the only consent application they had received from ReadyMix. The original consent for the site at No.1 Browns Rd was granted three years ago and gave consent to remove 300,000 square metres of material. To date, only half that amount had been removed with the consent due to expire on March 25. All restrictions currently affecting the consent will carry over, including hours of operation and vehicle movements. The hours of operation consented were between 6am-8pm Monday to Friday and 6am - midday Saturday. There were up to 200 vehicle movements per day as well as processing on site. The WDC spokesman said they had not heard of any complaints or issues regarding the existing quarry, but acknowledged the increased public interest surrounding quarrying in the area. Isaac Community Association spokesman Bud Caldwell said the group could not comment on the renewal, but they did hope that it was a sign that ReadyMix was looking at other ventures than the Isaac Rd quarry. TOPP TWINS COMING Kiwi comedy legends Jools and Lynda Topp are set to play a show at Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa. All proceeds of the show will go towards the recovery of the township of Waiau. The town suffered extensive damage during the Hurunui-Kaikoura Earthquakes, including losing the school swimming pool and the Waiau Lodge Hotel. Hanmer band Test of Time would support the Topp Twins on stage, along with 30 members of the local choir. The regular entry fee to Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa covered the cost of the show, with the pools pledging half its takings from the day to the cause. DINE HURUNUI The Taste of Hurunui dinner and auction raised over $20,000 for repairs on community buildings damaged in the HurunuiKaikoura Earthquakes last year. Over 180 people supported the event held at Christchurch Casino. Guests were served a four course dinner with food and matched wines sourced from the Hurunui District. Student Volunteer Army leader Sam Johnson spoke on the evening, which was hosted by Mark Inglis. TOURIST DRIVER AT FAULT A tourist must pay $1400 in reparation to the driver he injured in a head-on crash near Hanmer Springs. Uwe Thomas Hohbein, from Germany, will have to pay the money before he is allowed to leave New Zealand later this month. The 57-year-old veered across the centre line of SH7 on Saturday. The head-on crash broke the wrist of the man who was travelling in the car in the other direction, and the injured man and his wife had to be taken to Christchurch Hospital by ambulance. It, along with the Rangiora Pharmacy, High Street Living and others, had to leave their site due to the planned demolition and rebuild of the building between High St and New World Rangiora. The new site will be on Moorhouse Ave, at the intersection of Deans Ave and Blenheim Rd. Owner Sophie Wang said they would keep the name, keep the food, keep the coffee and proudly display images and stories of their Rangiora origins ‘‘so people know who we are, and why we’re there’’. ‘‘We love what we do here and the food we provide, that’s why we’re keeping the name. It’s really sad for us as well, but, that’s just the way it’s got to be for the business.’’ Both Wang and co–owner Michael Lau lived in Christchurch with young families. Wang did not know how many of her employees would move with them and was discussing with other Rangiora cafes to find them work after the deli closed its doors. June Powly had been coming to the Good St Deli everyday for lunch for 10 years. She was such a regular customer that if she did not come two days in a row, staff 25 % off Good St Deli owner Sophie Wang is sad the Rangiora institution will leave the town, but is glad to have a resolution. MATTHEW SALMONS/ FAIRFAX NZ ‘‘I will miss this place, it was like a second home.’’ June Powly would call her to see if she was alright. She said the staff and owners were always good to her and that she would be taken into town by Resene Premium Paints, Wood Stains, Primers, Sealers, Wallpaper, Decorating Accessories and Cleaning Products one of the baristas to see the new location. ‘‘I’ve never had an unpleasant staff member that whole time. I will miss this place, it was like a second home. I came in seven days a week.’’ Powly said her son would return home from the United States on holiday soon and would help her find a new regular spot. She was unhappy that The Good St Deli had been forced to relocate. ‘‘One thing’s for sure, if when the place is rebuilt another cafe goes in here, I’m not interested. These people have worked very hard and I think it’s cruel how [they have] been treated.’’ Wang said she thought the coming winter would be hard on the hospitality industry in Rangiora and that the rapid increase in establishments in town had outpaced the potential market. ‘‘The rates here are slightly cheaper than Christchurch, but it’s just a bigger market [in the city] and we’ve got a good spot there.’’ Customers with free coffees on their loyalty cards could redeem them at Fools of Desire, Reality Bites or the new premises. Environment Canterbury rainfall data shows up to 77.5 millimetres of rain has fallen in parts of North Canterbury over the past week, but rainfall was as low as 36mm in other parts of the region. The gentle rain soaked in enough to provide a boost to pastures and winter crop growth, but will not refill dry stock dams and depleted water tables. Keith Berry has a finishing farm near Waipara with about 4500 stock units, a mix of dairy, beef and lambs. He said the recent wet weather was ‘‘probably the most rain in one go’’ since January two years ago. ‘‘This rain couldn’t be better because it’s been sort of gentle over the last two days,’’ Berry said. It had come early enough to do some good for the winter and autumn sown crops. ‘‘It means the prospect of a much easier winter, and the prospect that we don’t have to go out and buy expensive winter feed to get the stock through.’’ Berry, who has been farming for 31 years, said the drought had been hard financially and getting the rain was a ‘‘huge morale booster’’. Cheviot sheep and beef farmer Ben Ensor said getting the rain was massive as it was ‘‘looking pretty bleak before that’’. ‘‘Farmers were under pressure with the ongoing dry and obviously the earthquakes as well, so it’s huge just to see a few prolonged days of gentle rain.’’ The Ashley Gorge Track opening was well-attended in spite of the rain. SUPPLIED It was ‘‘a bloody good start’’ but after three years of below average rainfall it would take more than this to say the drought is over. ‘‘Hopefully we’ll continue to get a bit of rain and fill the water table up and get things back to a bit more normal.’’ Federated Farmers North Canterbury meat and fibre chairman Dan Hodgen said it was not going to be an amount of rain but a period of rain that was going to fix the drought. The top couple of inches of soil were now ‘‘pretty good’’, but below that it was bone dry. ‘‘It’s a good start, but I wouldn’t call it a drought breaker by any stretch.’’ The recent rain was ‘‘a good shot in the arm’’, he said, which would help get crops up and running for the winter. It gives us a chance to be productive again.’’ Keith Berry says the morale boost is probably as important as the grass that will grow from the rain. JOSEPH JOHNSON/FAIRFAX NZ Ashley Gorge track opens EMMA DANGERFIELD A new walking track through native bush has been officially opened, albeit in slightly soggy conditions. The Ashley Gorge Track was constructed by community volunteers, Oxford Area School and Aotawhiti Unlimited Discovery School, with the assistance of the corrections department. Funding for the works came from the Waimakariri District Council, Oxford Eyre Ward Advis- ory and Oxford Fresh Choice. The 2km loop track, about an hour’s walk through regenerating beech forest, has been established on Department of Conservation (DOC) land as a partnership between DOC and the Ashley Gorge Reserve Group, which is a subcommittee of the Waimakariri District Council. Jan Shelton, of the Ashley Gorge Reserve Group, said the opening was a success in spite of the weather, with about 80 people turning out and walking the track, as well as another four groups of people walking it later in the day. Examples of native flora include kanuka, lancewood, fuchsia, matai, broadleaf and whiteywood, and the area is also home to the endangered native small snail, Wainui Edwardi. Future plans will be in two more stages: the first to extend the track network and the second to implement an intensive pest control programme to encourage the return of native birds to the area. MARCH 15, 2017, NORTHERN OUTLOOK stuff.co.nz 7 Gumboots on at Wine & Food Festival ADELE REDMOND Miserable weather leant a ‘‘hardy North Canterbury vibe’’ to the area’s annual wine and food festival. North Canterbury Wine and Food Festival organiser Peg Morgan said over 2500 attended the festival with event organisers and stallholders overwhelmed by the support of the crowds at Glenmark Domain on Sunday. Hopes of beating last year’s 3000-person turnout were dashed by rain and brisk southwesterlies but locals were undeterred, Morgan said. ‘‘The fashion out here is super cool. There’s little kids with their gummies and heaps of young people as well as some of the mums and dads coming out,’’ she said. ‘‘The support was from attendees was mind-blowing, everyone got out and stuck in despite the rain forecasted. There was an amazing air of optimism to the event this year, and we’re already looking forward to what success 2018 holds for the festival.’’ Out of the 50 vendors, wine sellers were the natural favourite, with people ‘‘cracking into it right on 10.30[am]’’ and festival organisers promising ‘‘extra big’’ pours to brighten up the gloomy forecast. Around 200 cars from Austins to Zodiacs are expected to rally for 15th North Canterbury Classic Tour that rolls off in Amberley this Sunday. Net proceeds from the event go to the Waiau School swimming pool rebuild. The original concrete pool built in 1928 was wrecked during the November earthquakes. Longtime organiser Trevor Stanley said all indicators signalled ‘‘the best ever classic tour’’. He said some participants market on Charles St in Kaiapoi from 9am-2pm with fresh veges, plants and fruit. All locally grown. SUN MAR 19 North Canterbury Classic Tour: Departing from The Woodlands Cafe, Leithfield, this tour of sealed back country roads is open to all vintage, classic, exotic, rare and unique vehicles. The tour is fundraising for the replacement of the Waiau school and community pool. Report from 9:15am to 10:30am were planning to come dressed to the eras of their vehicles. The event holds special significance for the veteran rally identity. ‘‘It’s great day to retire on, after 43 years of vintage and classic vehicle involvement and as events organiser,’’ he said. Stanley’s retirement won’t spell the end of the tour, however, with his family continuing to run it. Sunday’s lineup will leave the Woodlands Café on the intersection State Highway 1 and AshworthsBeach Road before Leithfield where two previous two North classic tour have finished. The route, traditionally kept under wraps until the big day, includes Stanley’s favourite North Canterbury roads. ‘‘It is over all sealed roads, two of my favourites, undulating and twisting. Great fun,’’ he said. The lunch stop is in the Waiau School grounds, a special spot enjoyed by the 2006 and 2010 North Canterbury Classic. The school committee will sell lunches for the travellers and the PTA also hopes to secure some stall holders from the Hanmer Springs monthly market. The North Canterbury Classic Tour has raised more than $28,000 over fourteen years for different causes, but Stanley said that figure could be closer to $34,000 as three tours were not recorded. for departure, entries $15 per vehicle. Review Logan (R16) Directed by James Mangold Starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Richard E Grant 137 mins ★★★★ If Wolverine’s last, impressive solo outing in 2013 was a Samurai movie, then this fitting farewell is most assuredly a Western. It’s no secret that Logan marks the departure of both old Wolvie himself, Hugh Jackman, and the original Professor Charles Xavier, Sir Patrick Stewart, and they sign off from almost two decades in the world of X-Men in some style here. Set in a near future where mutants are essentially extinct, Logan sees our Adamantiumclawed one working as a chauffeur for hire, while taking care of the ailing and increasingly addled Professor in a remote location just south of the USMexico border. However, as both men begin to feel that death may be their only release as their remaining powers begin to turn poisonous, into their orbit comes a young girl (Dafne Keen) in need of their help. She’s been pursued by authorities, government and sinister. But while Logan wants initially wants nothing to do with Logan is the Wolverine movie fans wanted and deserved. her, Charles believes she has more in common with them than first appears. A film of extremes, Logan is both ultra-violent and heartwrenchingly elegiac. Cleverly incorporating its comic-book origins into the narrative and then savagely dismissing them (‘‘ice-cream for bedwetters,’’ Logan dismisses the pen and ink versions of his adventures as), James Mangold’s film is the next step in the Deadpool and Mad Max: Fury Road inspired-revolution – a serious superhero film for grown ups. It’s Unforgiven, Terminator 2 and Shane all rolled into one – with a bleached visual look straight out of the 1970s. Jackman and Stewart are both superb, while the eclectic supporting cast includes Richard E Grant, Eriq La Salle, Stephen Merchant and Boyd Holbrook. More importantly though, Logan is the Wolverine movie fans wanted and deserved, with more than enough special effects to satisfy. – James Croot DENTIST OPEN 7 DAYS LATE NIGHTS TOOTHACHE? Living the good life "I lived by myself for a long while, and was always independent," says serviced apartment resident Reg Morris. "However, my family recognised that I needed care, and at first I didn’t agree. Sometimes it takes someone else to see what you don’t. So reluctantly I came to the Charles Upham Retirement Village, and I have to say that it was the best thing I have done for a long time. "I order my meals, and oh, they are wonderful. Their sweet and sour fish is an absolute delight! "I cannot praise the staff enough. They will do anything for you, and with a smile. There is so much to do here. Charles Upham’s lovely serviced apartments provide the next step from living fully independently in one of the village’s townhouses or independent apartments. It is part of the continuum of care residents receive – there is also a rest home, hospital and dementia care centre onsite and rest home care is available in a serviced apartment if required. Village manager Rachel Garrard says, ‘‘As residents need change we can adjust their care as required. It also means if their partners need change before they themselves do, they don’t have to move from the village. We can look after everyone at every level’’. The final stage of serviced apartments is set to be complete in April 2017. Modern apartments with kitchenettes and ensuites are a great option for those who might need assistance. Residents keep their independence but have the benefit of a care package suited to their needs – specific meals, or all three provided with morning and afternoon tea, fresh towels delivered daily, and housekeeping services. These services are included in the weekly fee, which Ryman guarantees will stay fixed for as long as residents are in their apartment*. Respite care is also available in a serviced apartment or the care centre. Families can be content that aging relatives are secure and are well-looked after in a nourishing, attentive environment. Oh, the guilt of dropping my baby off at pre-school so I could attend the two-hour class. Oh, the joy of being able to contribute something to conversations other than which nappies were on special that week! The first article I wrote following this course was published, and I went on to contribute regular light-hearted pieces on being a Mum to a parenting magazine. Then one day, pushing what had since become a double buggy with our younger son now on the scene, a twirling beautician’s sign planted the seed of an idea. I’d write a book! I mouthed off to friends and family that this was my plan – self-inflicted pressure and it wasn’t an easy task. I calculated how many words were in an average women’s novel. It’s around 100,000, a daunting prospect when you’ve typed a sentence, only 989,000 words to go! I’d love to be one of those writers who pens the first few lines for each chapter of their book before going back and filling in the blanks. It doesn’t work like that for me, though; it’s a much more organic process with the characters going off on tangents but eventually getting their happy ending. My husband’s very supportive, and so I finished a draft of that first novel and posted the manuscript off. Three months later, everything in the world of publishing seems to take three months; I had a positive letter from Penguin NZ. I was buzzing, but fate intervened, and Vicki Marsdon, the publisher who was interested in my book left for another company. Her new house wasn’t keen to take on another author in my genre, but we kept in touch. I independently published which was never my dream, but it kept me writing. Fate intervened once more three books later when Vicki contacted me to say she was now a literary agent and was keen to sign up my new novel, The Hurunui-Waiau Water Zone Committee Is water quality in the Hurunui River getting better or worse? She did, and within the year I had a two-book deal with Harper Collins UK. Cut to the present – my mum was in Paper Tree, Rangiora when Dad had to put a restraining hand on her. He’d seen her take a deep breath and was fearful she was about to re-enact Julie Andrews scene in the Sound of Music. You know, flinging her arms wide before announcing, not that the hills were alive but that her daughter wrote those three books ‘right there’ on the shelf. She didn’t, but she did cry. This March 24 The Traveller’s Daughter is being released in e-book format and will be available in paperback through ABOUT EASTER SUNDAY TRADING Share your stories at New Zealand’s newest online community for Over-60s. Interior designer and retailer Alex Fulton makes a few predictions and suggestions. I Stoned Crystals was launched 2015 with a collection of five geometric shaped crystals. Alex Fulton picks these as a hot trend. f you are looking for inspiration to lose weight, meditate daily or become a better version of ‘‘you’’ I’m afraid this is not the place. There’s plenty of that at every click of Facebook or Instagram, so instead I thought I’d forget self-help and focus on what interior design styles we can expect from the myriad new products in the marketplace. As a shopkeeper, I’m also part crystal ball reader as we have to predict products that will be ‘‘hot’’ and avoid those that are not. It’s usually months out from the season you are actually buying for and you’ve got to call on a mixture of gutinstinct, Nostradamus and insight. Don’t get me wrong – I have got it wrong, but I mostly do get it right, which leads to internal ‘‘thank goodness’’ moments and my staff having to eat their ‘‘this will never sell you crazy design lady’’ words. So let me show you what I think will be big this year: Interior designer Alex Fulton. SOPHIE JENSEN Crystals Dust off your dream-catchers, people! Crystals are back and are making a huge impact across the interior product realm. In fact, I have my Himalayan Salt Lamp on and my incense sticks a-burnin’. True story. There are a plethora of products that are drawing on the power and form of crystals. Unfortunately, they are often boxed as ‘‘hippie’’ and misunderstood or undervalued by the mainstream, but Melbourne-based company Stoned Crystals have put an end to that, and are producing a range of high quality and beautifully packaged crystals sourced from Brazil. Now they’re turning up in the most chic places. The Greco vase’s design by Octaevo is meant to evoke a voyage around the Med. The Bazaar paper vase, also by Octaevo, was sourced from Maison & Objet. Paris tradeshow for all things related to lifestyle, decoration and design. I found about a thousand products that I would love to import, but knowing about freight costs, I had to get a wee bit creative with what I could source. Two products that tick the easy-to-ship box were the cardboard lights and pendants from Andbros (Finland) and the re-usable paper vases from Octaveo (Spain). I had never seen these products before and immediately recognised the value in their uniqueness and their price point. Fair to say they are selling like paper hot-cakes. Classics As well as finding new and exciting products, I also like to have a classic or two presiding on our shelves. What makes a classic? It’s an object that has aesthetic value and serves as a standard of its kind, remaining upto-date regardless of its year of design. We have two such examples. The Stendig Calendar, and its smaller cousin, the Max 365. First designed in 1966 by Massimo Vignelli, it’s now a classic with its dramatic size and bold graphics and can be used just as effectively as when it was first designed in the 60s. Another European classic I have rediscovered is Provendi wall-mounted soap. Founded in the 1950s, this soap has become famous because of its very simple concept: a solid soap that is always dry and close at hand. Even the smell and colour takes you back to your childhood! The Cardboard pendant light by Andbros is an uncomplicated design made to complement any space in your home – simple yet sophisticated. Designed and made in Finland. BARBARA SMITH RESCUE BURNT BEGONIAS WHEN ARE KUMARA READY? It can be hard to tell when to dig for kumara as the tops don’t die down when the tubers are ripe. As a rule, kumara take five months from planting to harvest, but last spring and early summer were so cold that tubers may not have reached maturity yet. Before committing yourself to digging up the whole bed, do some careful bandicooting in a couple of places to see what’s happening underground. Size isn’t the only thing to look for. Only mature kumara will store well, so check the skin is firm and cut one into a couple of pieces. The cut sides will dry quickly if the kumara is ready to store. They’ll last for five months or so in a cool, dark place. If you’ve got a lot of tiddlers, peel or scrub them well and cut into pieces roughly the same size. Blanch in boiling water for two minutes, then free-flow freeze. They’ll come in handy for winter Tuberous begonias have a lot of flower power, blooming on and on throughout summer and bringing colour to shady corners. They prefer a well-drained spot out of the wind that’s shaded during the hottest part of the day. Now that the sun is lower in the sky, check that your plants that were in shade all summer aren’t being burnt. The leaves (pictured) were covered with droplets of water which magnified the sun’s rays with dire results. When the flowers have finished, leave the foliage in place and keep watering as needed. Food made by photosynthesis in the leaves now will build up the tuber for next season. Over the next month or so, the stems and leaves will start to die back and can be removed. Stop watering potted begonias about mid-April. Store pots on their sides or where they won’t get waterlogged. If you need the pots for something else, or you live in a frosty spot, take the tubers out of the pots, leave them to dry for a couple of days, then store. Wrap them in newspaper to stop them touching and put in a paper bag, or put them in a cardboard box with dry potting mix or sphagnum moss to stop them rolling around. Store in a cool place. Begonias grown in the ground can be left in warm areas. Otherwise lift the tubers before the first frost and store as above. In late August put the tubers (concave side up) in a bright spot out of direct sunlight to sprout. Barely cover the sprouted tubers with fresh potting mix and begin the cycle all over again. TRAP FRUIT FLIES If, like me, you’ve got bowls of ripening fruit and tomatoes on the kitchen bench, you’ve probably got a cloud of fruit flies as well. Drosophila melanogaster are common in gardens, worm farms, rubbish bins and drains – any damp place where rotting plant material or fermenting liquid has gathered. Drosophila have been used for genetic research for more than 50 years because they breed rapidly. Not only do they share 75 per cent of the genes that cause disease in humans but their large chromosomes have barcode-like stripes so changes to the genetic code can be easiy identified under a microscope. In the garden they can be used as an indicator for potential problems. Drosophila have a keen sense of smell for the rotting fruit where they breed and the fungi that the larvae feed on. If you see them swarming around your tomatoes or fruit trees, take a closer look. Chances are there’ll be bird-pecked or over-ripe fruit, a fungal disease or a drain blocked with rotting leaves. Don’t worry about fruit flies in the compost bin or the worm farm. They are just getting on with their recycling job. (Avoid a faceful of tiny flies when you lift the lid by burying fresh scraps under older material.) In the kitchen, keep things under control by cleaning up the fruit bowl and vege bin. Also watch for spills around your bokashi bin or compost bucket, unrinsed bottles in the recycling bin and pet food bowls. Make a trap for blowflies but bait it with fruit juice, wine or a piece of fruit or a spoonful of jam in a little water. Add a drop of detergent to lower the surface tension. The flies are lured in but can’t get out and eventually drown. KEEP PLANTING The soil is still warm, even though the days are getting shorter, so keep planting. This column is adapted from the weekly e-zine, get growing, from New Zealand Gardener magazine. For gardening advice delivered to your inbox every Friday, sign up for Get Growing at: getgrowing.co.nz Beetroot, carrots, coriander, leeks, spring onions, lettuce, radishes, spinach and silverbeet can be grown from seed but transplant broccoli, cabbages and cauli seedlings. It’s worth making an extra effort when planting seedlings into dry soil. Stand the punnet in a weak solution of fertiliser or worm wee until no air bubbles appear. Fill the planting hole with water and allow to drain. Firm the soil around the roots of the seedlings and water again. Mulch well. Water deeply so that the roots grow downwards from the start, safe from hot weather and drying winds. It’s Ulysses, a kind of Greek Maui, though without Maui’s ambition, and with a much worse sense of direction. Ulysses was one of the Greeks who destroyed the ancient city of Troy, and then got hopelessly lost sailing home. On his journey, Ulysses had many adventures, one of which inspired a set of Yale behavioural economists to set up a website to help people achieve their dreams, including their money dreams. It’s called StickK.com, and it allows people to set up what are known as Ulysses contracts. These are contracts between your present self, and your future self, where present you pledges to do something good for future you. They are named after Ulysses in honour of his cunning plan to hear the Sirens sing. Sirens were evil mermaids, and once a man heard the Sirens’ beautiful song, he would dash himself into the sea, and drown. But Ulysses really, really wanted to hear them, and not die. So he ordered his crew to tie him to the mast, and not to release him, under any circumstances. They then put wax in their ears, and rowed up to the Sirens. In binding himself to the mast, Ulysses’ present self was doing something great for his future self. Unlike Ulysses, people are often pretty bad at doing the things that are good for their future selves. It’s why so many of us eat so badly, don’t exercise, and save a pittance. But the Yale economists know people are more likely to do the good things, if they bind themselves with a Ulysses contract, especially if they have a ‘‘referee’’ watching their progress, before whom they will be shamed, if they fail. Through StickK, people can even set financial penalties to incentive themselves not to fail, by pledging to give money to someone, or thing they hate if Painter Herbert James Draper showed Ulysses tied to his mast, beset by Sirens. ‘‘People are bad at doing the things that are good for their future selves.’’ they fail. A cat lover might give money to Gareth Morgan for instance. A commuter might give money to Wilson Parking. I learnt about Ulysses contracts from TV pyschologist Nigel Latta’s Mind Over Money show, but then I realised how many of us use two Ulysses-type contracts to get ahead and don’t even realise. The first is KiwiSaver. Instead of spending all your money on yummy and shiny things, present you sticks some into KiwiSaver for the benefit of future you. The penalty for not doing so is losing the employer/government contributions, which are the closest thing to free money anyone gets. The other Ulysses contract is the mortgage. Present you takes on debt to enrich future you. The penalty for non-payment is SUPPLIED a mortgagee sale. But an increasing number of people don’t just make the minimum repayments the banks ask for. They set their mortgage payments higher in a superUlysses contract which will leave their future selves far richer. BNZ says in the past year alone, customers opting for higher voluntary repayments wiped 20,000 years of their combined mortgages. That’s something their future selves will one day thank them for. 200 AILABLE! But we are slowly getting better at assuring our resilience, and this is where we can turn to experts in the field who can point us in the right direction. Based in Pegasus just north of Christchurch, is Emergency Management Consultancy Ltd. The brainchild of Dave Houlihan, the company provides experienced consultants who will provide customised Comprehensive Emergency Management and Business Development programs. These provide a complete approach for dealing with disruptions in both the public and the private sector. There are many services available, but chief amongst them is, as the title of the company suggests, emergency management planning. While many of us think of the effects of the earthquakes upon Christchurch, the November shakes demonstrate impact on rural communities. Planning for unexpected events involves identifying risks to people, property and animals, and taking steps to eliminate or reduce these hazards. Operational systems and capabilities need to be developed, with access to emergency services. Procedures must also be established, so that however remote the property, there are clear steps to be taken. Certainly rural dwellers need to be selfreliant, which is important when emergency services are at a distance. It is reassuring to know that we have access to experts in the field. Dave Houlihan has an extensive background with the New Zealand Fire Service and looking after security matters at the Canterbury District Health Board. While always with a practical outlook he nevertheless kept up with theory by completing a post graduate degree in emergency management at AUT. In 2013 he started up Emergency Management Consultancy Ltd. ‘‘The whole area of emergency management is still a young field,’’ he says. ‘‘The important thing now is for people to understand what our role is. Getting your Planning for emergencies will reduce danger to life and property, and give ongoing protection to infrastructure. organisation ready to cope with a disaster, crisis or business interruption is partly about doing some planning and partly about ensuring you develop practices to become more resilient.’’ Dave also has an interest in the science of psychology and behavioural science principles and has completed postgraduate papers. What is often under- estimated is the psychological effect of such events. For this reason he is developing access to psychologists as a part of his operation, and his son Dominic is working in this field as part of his studies at Otago University. Together in 2015 they started another consultancy business, Legendary Psychology Ltd. Legendary Psychology Ltd specialises in the application of well-supported psychological principles and empirical research in helping companies and organisations to achieve optimum potential. Currently Legendary Psychology Ltd is offering a free analysis of workplace health and safety status as a support for the Health and Safety at Work Act (2015). Application of psychological principles helps employers ensure that all practical steps are taken to protect their staff. In addition to setting up a practical plan tailored to the need of clients, they have set up regular review and feedback processes involving all levels of an organisation to gain a periodical assessment of the plan. The company takes both quantitative and qualitative assessment of projects, to clearly demonstrate the benefits gained from the application of the psychological principle in businesses. I t’s the day the world goes green, and on St Patrick’s Day New Zealand has its own reasons to sham-rock n’roll on Ireland’s national day. Ireland and New Zealand, two small island nations at the opposite ends of the Earth, share much history. The waves of immigrants who left Ireland’s shores in the mid and late 19th century have made a lasting impact on Aotearoa, both culturally and economically. Our national anthem God Defend New Zealand was written by Monaghan-born Thomas Bracken. The Treaty of Waitangi was signed on behalf of the Crown by Waterford-born William Hobson, and the captain of the Original All Blacks, Dave Gallaher, came from County Donegal. CHRIS MCKEEN ways to preserve their native languages. And so as St Patrick’s Day is celebrated throughout the world, in New Zealand, the day is marked by communities from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South. Events to mark Ireland’s day include the biggest St Patrick’s parade in the Southern Hemisphere in Auckland’s Ponsonby as well as a fundraising ball in aid of Mercy Hospice and the New Zealand Gaelic Games championship finals. In Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, the cities’ Irish Societies open their doors on St Patrick’s Day with family friendly celebrations planned during the day and into the evening. Auckland’s iconic Sky Tower will also turn green, as part of a ‘Global Greening’ of world landmarks such as the ancient Colosseum in Rome, the London Eye in Britain and Niagara Falls in Canada. Also going green in New Zealand this year are Auckland War Memorial Museum, Eden Park and the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington. And in local pubs and communities around New Zealand, the Irish and those ‘Irish for a day’ will be wetting the shamrock and enjoying Irish music and dance. So, on this St Patrick’s Day be proud of New Zealand’s Irish legacy, and know that while black is New Zealand’s colour, if you scratch the surface you’ll find it’s a little bit green. Steady rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the riders, with most taking it as an additional challenge - and some even revelling in it! Unfortunately the combination of rain and bikes took it’s toll on the track conditions so organisers were forced to divert part of the course onto shingle roads and reduce the event from six hours to four. Open Men’s team “Taggarts Demo 1” (Mike Smart, Marc Prutton & Reon Nolan) backed up their win last year by completing 14 laps, just ahead of team “Steady the Ships”. Organised by the North Canterbury Sport & Recreation Trust, the Rakahuri Rage was introduced in 2015 to encourage people to try mountain biking and explore the local North Canterbury cycling tracks, and it has quickly become a fixture on the North Canterbury sporting calendar. SUPPLIED One hoop short at ‘Tin Shed Stadium’ JONATHAN LEASK The Amberley Pavilion is set to return to being Tin Shed Stadium. The Hurunui District Council’s Amberley Ward Committee has supported the purchase of a protective net so that the pavilion, known as the ‘‘Tin Shed’’, can be utilised for basketball and other court sports. Amberley’s Erin Smith, with the support of several Hurunui schools, approached the council to request permission to install a sliding net to protect the stage and use the space for indoor sports again. Smith obtained a grant from the Amberley Lions for the full cost of the net, with no cost to the Council for the project, who will benefit from the hire of the hall for sporting activities. The plan was to be up and running in time for the start of the Friday night school basketball competition but they came up ‘‘a little short’’. ‘‘The net was too short so it has been sent back to get extended and we only have the one hoop up at the moment.’’ The pavilion used to have a hoop at each end until the stage was put in, and putting up a hoop is easier said than done. Smith said reinstating the second hoop will require ‘‘some form of mechanism’’ which she hoped would be sorted before the term four com- petition. An additional court in the region is welcome news to North Canterbury Basketball who are ‘‘desperately short on court space’’, North Canterbury Basketball operations manager Caroline Whittaker said. Adding the venue will drastically cut down the travel factor for the Hurunuibased teasm in the Friday night competition. There are 102 teams in the term one competition, which swells to around 118 in term four. Whittaker believed additional venue would entice even more entries from Hurunui schools, and possibly teams from Kaikoura, if it can get the official sign off in time. With or without the second hoop, Smith said the net has benefits for more than just basketball. ‘‘Even the likes of the little guys playing rugby have that option to go inside on a wet or cold day now.’’ Your health WITH AUTHOR AND NUTRITIONAL BIOCHEMIST DR LIBBY Educating kids about nutrition Q: I was a very overweight child and I am determined to educate my kids about good nutrition (from a young age!) What are your top tips to get help get my children interested in food and good nutrition? Thanks, Ali A: Good on you for wanting to start this process early, as the foundations you set up in childhood can have a huge impact on how your children perceive good health and nutrition. Here are a few ideas to help keep your kids interested in viewing food as nourishment. EAT TOGETHER AS A FAMILY AT THE DINNER TABLE Eating at the dinner table, rather than in front of the TV plays a vital role in setting up good habits. Instead of mindlessly eating, sitting together at the table facilitates more awareness of what you are putting into your mouth, whilst reinforcing that Eating at the dinner table, rather than in front of the TV plays a vital role in setting up good habits. 123RF Ask Dr Libby Email your questions for Dr Libby to [email protected]. Please note, only a selection of questions can be answered. eating is something you do to nourish yourself, not a side activity to TV watching. Using positive reinforcement for helping with the cooking or for eating veges also instils good habits that will encourage lifelong good nutrition. LET THEM CHOOSE A RECIPE THEY WANT TO MAKE Everyone likes having the chance to take charge in the kitchen. The responsibility and creativity that comes with choosing a recipe helps children feel like they are making something of their own. Choosing their own recipe helps create independence that will carry on into their adult life, leading to better food choices and a love for cooking good, nutritious meals. ENCOURAGE KIDS TO HELP PREPARE AND TASTE FOOD Giving your child a chance to demonstrate how responsible they are helps with selfconfidence and trust. Chopping veges, peeling vegetables or stirring the pot are all ways to let kids help in the kitchen. Tasting each ingredient also sets the foundation for a wide palate and experimentation with food. Being able to say ‘‘I helped make that’’ when the meal is on the table is invaluable for creating pride in their cooking skills. MAKE VEGETABLES AND SALADS A NORMAL PART OF EVERY MEAL TIME Veges and salads don’t have to be boring. Try new recipes with veges or dressings to make them taste good. By making veges the norm in your household, you will see that kids will carry this through later in life as a result of the family’s good habits now. TAKE A COOKING CLASS TOGETHER There’s nothing more exciting than learning how to make a new meal with your loved ones under the guidance of a good cook. The sense of satisfaction and pride when you create something new is a joy. Better still opt for a cuisine you’re not very familiar with to enhance the learning and the fun. ❚ Dr Libby is a nutritional biochemist, best-selling author and speaker. Usually these links take you to where you want to go, but sometimes not! Spoofed links can be dangerous in regard to data security and identity theft. The following steps are useful when checking link safety: ❚ 1. Take a close look at the domain name in the link. Altered spelling of a domain name is an almost certain sign of a scamming attempt. For example, phishers may substitute a number for a letter (eg 0 instead of o). ❚ 2. Get into the habit of first hovering over the link with your mouse cursor before clicking on it. This will show you the actual address the link represents. ❚ 3. Another good way to check link safety is to make sure a site which requires you to enter financial details uses https and not http. Secure sites such as banks or e-commerce sites will always use the more secure form of http known as https. This ensures that your data is sent encrypted across the Internet to the website. https:// will be displayed in the address bar of the browser with a security padlock icon next to the address. More than 120 athletes from clubs stretching from Auckland to Invercargill competed over three days in four different disciplines, individual trampoline, synchronised trampoline, double mini trampoline and tumbling at the event hosted by Rangiora’s Ice Trampoline and Tumbling Sports. ‘‘What was really pleasing to see was the increase in numbers from the other South Island clubs, with Invercargill, Dunedin, Wanaka and Oamaru all having strong teams,’’ Ice coach Nigel Humphreys said. This year, GymsportNZ made the event a World Open Championship qualifying event adding an extra drawcard to the weekend. Humphreys said the athletes really turned on some stellar performances with the potential of attending the World Championships in Bulgaria in November. Leading the way was ICE Trampoline’s Kieran Growcott, who is only back in the sport for two months after a three-year absence, reaching the World qualifying score for men’s double mini tramp (DMT). Growcott’s score of 72.2 is a New Zealand record for two passes. Also keeping up her strong progress was Bronwyn Dibb, standing up two new DMT passes for the first time in competition, including a triple back somersault. On the line were positions in the New Zealand team for the Australian Nationals in May, with ICE Trampoline having 14 athletes working towards that goal. The Team is due to be named after next week’s last qualifying opportunity in Auckland. ICE has also been lucky enough to welcome a new senior coach to our club this year. John Howe’s experience as a former national champion and New Zealand representative continued into a successful coaching career with CSG in Christchurch until he made the move to ICE late last year. In the last six months, ICE has seen huge growth in its membership which Humprey’s said was helped by the success of Dylan Schmidt at last year’s Olympic games. ‘‘Having a New Zealand Trampoline representative in Rio has given the sport unprecedented profile and publicity,’’ he said. Ice Trampoline Club’s Bronwyn Dibb and Brittany Wang, pictured at the World Trampoline Championships in Denmark, produced strong performances at the 2017 Superbounce. Final reduced to one day fight JONATHAN LEASK Rangiora High School Girls Futsal team defended their Canterbury Regional title. SUPPLIED Rangiora HS girls bound for Futsal Nationals JONATHAN LEASK The Rangiora High School girl’s Futsal team have defended their Canterbury Regional title at the CPIT Gym in Christchurch. The team claimed an emphatic clean sweep in pool play and advanced straight into the final, with wins over Cashmere High School 7-0, Papanui High School 9-2, Marion College 12-1 and St Andrews College 8-2. They came up against St Andrews again in the final on Sunday, with the underdogs making the better start to lead 2-0. However, RHS captain, Tahlia Herman-Watt, led from the front scoring twice to level the scores at half time. The second strike 30-seconds before the break sparked the RHS side back into rhythm. A double strike from Abbey Neilson and goal from Maddison Silcock sealed a 5-2 win. The win books the team’s place in the New Zealand Secondary Schools National Tournament in Wellington on March 27-28 where they will attempt to improve on last year’s third place finish. ❚ Meanwhile, Parklands United came out on top in the senior men’s pre-season tournament hosted by Waimak United at Kendal park. Parklands beat Cashmere Technical 4-2 in the rain on Saturday. The Waimak senior men finished third with a 3-0 win over Christchurch United after goals from Matt Le Gros, Ben Shore and Chris Chick. Rain washed out play on the opening day of the Canterbury Country Premier Two-Day cricket final. Sefton and Weedons will be forced to find a result on day two, which will be extended to 110 overs, at MainPower Oval. If neither side can claim first innings honours, and the match reaches stumps as a draw, it will come down to bonus points accrued during the final. With each run earning 0.01 points and 0.2 points per wicket taken, it will encourage positive cricket from both teams on the final day of the premier season. The two-day plate final between Southbrook and OxfordRangiora was also washed out. In the Country senior grade, Ohoka confirmed their place in the final after a rain affected round. Ohoka bowled Kaiapoi out for 101 in 28.3 overs, with Keith Walker 6/30, but the sides never returned from lunch as the rain set in. Top-of-the-table Ohoka still secured the three points that ensure they will appear in the final. The crucial match to determine who they will meet between Diamond Harbour-Kaituna and Cheviot was abandoned. Cheviot need to see off Scargill to make the final and should they fail, Diamond Harbour-Kaituna can overtake them if they beat Ohoka. The winner of the final on March 25 will have the option of promotion to next summers premier competition. stuff.co.nz MARCH 15, 2017, NORTHERN OUTLOOK Rakahuri still rages in the rain JONATHAN LEASK It was wet and cold, yet the hardy riders still turned up for the Rakahuri Rage mountain bike race on Sunday. The rain scared away 32 teams, but more than 300 riders weren’t afraid of a little bit of mud on their mountain bike. Having knocked back the numbers, the continued rainfall then had its effect on the course and the time. The six-hour team’s race was cut to four due to the conditions and then mid-race the hilly eastern section of the course became a safety concern. ‘‘It was digging up quite a bit and getting rather slippery. The riders couldn’t get enough speed up on the approaches and then there wasn’t enough traction to get up which was causing a bit of a log jam,’’ North Canterbury Sport and Recreation Trust’s Tony Kean said. Organisers created a detour around the hill section via a shingle road, slightly shortening the course. The top team, Taggart Demo, clocked an impressive 14 laps during the race averaging a lap every 17:06 minutes. In the open women’s section, Go Girls had 11 laps to take the win while in the mixed grade, Cycleways managed to clock their 12 laps two minutes faster than runners-up, Warm Up. Mountainbikers wind their way through muddy tracks in the four-hour team event on Sunday. The Swannanoa Bulls team won the primary school’s category in a close battle with team Clicks from Fernside, while Loburn School entered an impressive five teams of Year 8 students as part of their William Pike Challenge Award. The cold and wet conditions this year were a polar opposite to last year’s 32-degree scorcher, with Kean hoping they can hit somewhere in the middle next year. COOPER DEFENDS TITLE On the international mountain biking scene, Woodend’s Anton Cooper claimed the elite crosscountry title at the 2017 Oceania Continental MTB Championships in Toowoomba. Cooper, the defending champion, took the lead on the opening DAVID WALKER/FAIRFAX NZ lap before a combination of a crash and mechanical problems saw his hopes of back to back titles fade, slipping to fourth at the halfway point of the five lap race. Undeterred by the bad luck, a late surge by the former under 23 world champion saw Cooper power by his rivals taking the title in 1 hour 25 minutes, 33 seconds clear of Australia’s Cameron Ivory. Sport shorts DIV II CHAMPS North Canterbury Swim Club had seven swimmers at the New Zealand Division II Champs in Rotorua recently. A short course meet for 12-18-year-olds, there were over 470 swimmers from 101 clubs throughout NZ. It was the first national meet for the swimmers and coach Michaela Norman said it was awesome to see lots of hard work pay off with some fantastic personal best times, finals and medals. NCSC were represented by Aria Marsh (5th in 800m freestyle and 7th in 100m backstroke) , Emma Schroder (3rd in 50m backstroke), Jocelyn Blay, Megan Lilly, Virginia Higgs (4th in 100m IM and 6th 50m breaststroke), Findlay Knox (6th in 100m freestyle) and Jacob Webb (2nd in 200m breaststroke). CAUGHEY EXTENDS LEAD Defending Superboat champion Peter Caughey finished second overall at round four of the New Zealand Jetspint Championships in Hastings on Sunday. Caughey said the weather again played a part, and although he would have rather have won the round he was happy to extend his lead in a series and head home with a healthy boat and motor three weeks out from round five in Wanganui. With two rounds remaining Caughey (109.5 points) is three points clear of Blake Briant (106.5). my.stuff.co.nz is the easy way to manage your newspaper subscription online! They can break power lines and network equipment, resulting in risk of serious injury or death as well as causing widespread power interruptions. This inconveniences farms and households, affects business productivity and causes damage to customers' electronic equipment and appliances. The Zones The regulations specify different zones for trees growing close to power lines and other electricity network equipment: the Notice Zone and the Growth Limit Zone. Tree “A” In Notice Zone Needs trimming Tree Owners' Responsibilities Tree owners are responsible for their trees; the results of tree damage to power lines can be a significant cost to a tree owner. Please check your trees, hedges or shelter belts regularly. If you are not sure what to look for, please call us so we can help. Remember, trees need to be kept a safe distance away from power lines and other electricity network equipment because: • Children that climb trees close to power lines are at risk of serious injury or death. • In severe weather conditions, vegetation can become electrically ‘live’ and may electrocute anyone coming into contact with it. • In bad weather, trees can topple or branches break away causing damage to power lines resulting in a power outage. In snow or icy conditions, the additional weight on the tree can cause a similar scenario. • Trees close to lines may cause electrical sparking resulting in fire. • Tree roots can grow around underground electricity cables, rupturing the insulation and causing power supply failure. What do the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations Mean toYou? These regulations are to provide a safe electricity supply to you and to protect the security of your electricity supply. They place responsibilities on trees owners (you) and the electricity network operator (MainPower). Thanks to PowerNet Limited for information used in this advert. Tree“B” In Growth Limit Zone Must be trimmed If your tree is growing within the Notice Zone (Tree A) you will receive a legal notice from us saying that it must be trimmed soon because it is growing too close to power lines and equipment. If your tree continues to grow into the Growth Limit Zone (Tree B) you will receive a legal notice from us requiring the tree to be trimmed (by an approved contractor) within a specified time frame. This is because the tree is now too close to power lines and equipment, and could cause a power outage and/or harm the public. As you might expect, the notice zones vary depending on the voltage of the power lines: Notice Zone Growth Limit Zone 66kV (high voltage) 5.0 metres 4.0 metres 33kV (high voltage) 3.5 metres 2.5 metres 11kV (high voltage) 2.6 metres 1.6 metres 400V/230V (low voltage) 1.5 metres 0.5 metres Overhead line Cut/Trim Notice MainPower staff are systematically visiting every area of our network and leaving Cut/Trim Notices with owners of trees that require some action under the regulations. In most cases, the cost of the first cut of trees affecting the MainPower network will be met by us. 2nd Cut/Trim Notice Many trees have received their free cut at MainPower’s cost. Please don’t wait to be reminded that your trees need to be cut again. Be proactive, regularly inspect your trees and if they are in either the Notice Zone or the Growth Limit Zone they must be trimmed safely: call us on 03 311 8381 for a free inspection and a quote from our utility arborists. Be aware that if your trees cause any problems on our network, you may be charged for all costs of repair. Offences Committed by Tree Owners There are tough penalties for tree owners who do not comply with a written request to cut their trees, or do not advise MainPower on 0508 60 70 80 of the time and location of the cutting work. On summary conviction, tree owners may be liable for a fine not exceeding $10,000 and a further fine of $500 for every day on which the offence continues. If your trees are considered an immediate danger to our network, MainPower has an obligation to remove any hazard. If you have failed to keep your trees clear of power lines, or not returned our paperwork, then as the tree owner you are responsible for all costs incurred by us to remove any hazard. kV=kilovolts V=volts Note: • These distances are from the power line, not the power pole. • These distances are a minimum and apply in all conditions, including high wind or snow. • In most instances, the power lines that go to a house or building are low voltage power lines. • Power lines that go down a street may be low or high voltage. Cutting Trees Near Live Lines Due to the risk of danger, cutting trees near live power lines is a very specialised job. MainPower has its own team of experienced and qualified utility arborists (arborists trained to work near live lines). Always remember: touching live power lines, or trees close to the lines, can result in serious injury or death.
