DOMA overturned as unconstitutional June 26, 2013
UUA President Rev. Peter Morales issued a statement following the U.S. Supreme Court’s
historic decisions on marriage equality:
“Today the highest court of our country stood on the side of love with its decision in United States
v. Windsor declaring that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional as a
deprivation of the equal liberty of persons that is protected by the Fifth Amendment. This is a
proud and momentous day for all who have suffered under this law and felt discrimination based
on their sexual orientation. It is a victory for the principle that civil rights belong to all.” Read his
complete statement here.
The UUA has a long tradition of support for marriage equality. As *two amicus curiae briefs filed
by dozens of religious in support of marriage equality in March of this year explained, “The
Unitarian Universalist Association began celebrating the unions of same-sex couples in 1979 and
formally affirmed this practice in 1984.”
*On March 20, 2013 The UUA joined two amicus curiae briefs filed in support of marriage equality
in the case United States v. Windsor. Read the full article here.
Louisville clean energy rally unites religious and environmental groups June 20, 2013
By Peter Smith, Louisville KY Courier-Journal
About 2,000 people gathered on Thursday in what organizers touted as Kentucky’s largest
environmental rally ever — an assortment of religious and environmental groups calling for clean
energy to ease what they warned would be the apocalyptic consequences from climate change.
“We can choose another way,” said the Rev. Peter Morales, president of the UUA, which cosponsored the rally during its national General Assembly. Read the full article here.
'Two Who Dared' Puts UUSC Founders' Heroism On Film
Documentary depicts little-known story of Martha and Waitstill Sharp’s efforts to save Jews and
dissidents during WWII.
By Michelle Bates Deakin, via uuworld.org
In February 1939, Martha and Waitstill Sharp embarked on a daring journey to aid refugees and
dissidents in Prague as the Nazis began to close in on Czechoslovakia. They left behind two
children and the congregation at the Wellesley Hills, Mass., Unitarian Church, where the Rev.
Waitstill Sharp served as minister. During World War II, the Sharps saved the lives of hundreds of
political dissidents, Jews, and children as their work took them across Europe. Their efforts also
led to the founding of the Unitarian Service Committee, the forerunner of the Unitarian
Universalist Service Committee. Yet, despite their heroics, their story was somewhat obscure,
both within Unitarian Universalist circles and within their own family.
The Sharps’ grandson, Artemis Joukowsky III, has spent years piecing their story back together.
His efforts have led to his grandparents being named “Righteous Among the Nations” by Yad
Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust museum and memorial—two of only three Americans to receive that
honor. And Joukowsky has directed and co-produced a documentary film, Two Who Dared: The
Sharps’ War, to bring their story to the big screen. Joukowsky began rolling out the film in March,
with screenings at the Museum of Tolerance in New York City and the Boston Public Library. The
movie officialyl premiered during the weeks of April 7–22, to celebrate Yom HaShoah, Holocaust
Remembrance Day.
UU congregations and synagogues across the country are also scheduling screenings and
discussions. Two Who Dared has won several awards, including the Special Jury Prize from the
Amsterdam Film Festival and the Redemptive Storyteller Award from the Redemptive Film
Festival in Virginia Beach, Va.
UUA President Peter Morales called the Sharps’ story “a powerful example of religious faith in
action.” “I encourage Unitarian Universalists and anyone interested in human rights and social
justice to see this compelling film,” he said. Congregations can arrange to screen the film through
the Two Who Dared website.
