D ov e Ta l e N e w s l e t t e r J U LY 2 0 1 6 A message from Pastor Josh Reese I was thinking recently about our country. Obviously lots of people have angst. It would seem there is a significant vacuum of effective leadership. How do we as believers respond? Here are some of my thoughts in the context of scripture: Gratitude – Whenever we grow anxious, God’s word says to respond with gratitude. Given our present anxieties, we can still be grateful to God as Americans. Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Honor – As believers our first allegiance is to God, but we are also called to honor our leaders. Even with their flaws, we are told that everyone should “be subject to the governing authorities” (Rom 13:1), giving honor (Rom 13:7) and living in submission, “For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people” (1 Pet 2:15). Involvement – Whether it is calling your representative, voting with integrity, serving on the school board, running for elected office or just staying informed and praying fervently, believers should not live isolated. Rather we ought to be salt and light. Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matt 5:13, 14, 16). Humility – Ultimately, God is in control. Our heart would be for this country to be a place where people live to love the Lord of heaven and earth. And so our prayers should echo those of 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” In this summer season, in the wake of many 4 th of July celebrations, our call as followers of Christ is to express gratitude, give honor, pursue involvement and pray with humility. My prayer is for this community of faith to do that well. There will be a pot-luck lunch after the service followed by the meeting. • Approved a donation of $1,000.00 to Trinity International University. The state of Illinois has made drastic cuts in aid to all learning institutions and students, seriously affecting the budget for Trinity. • Revised and approved the Vacation Policy for full time employees. We are having difficulty staffing some of our ministries during the summer and vacation time. Of particular concern is the need for help in the nursery. This is often the first connection and impression that young families have when visiting the church. If you enjoy loving on little children consider helping. If interested contact Beth Fojtik or the church office. Other areas that can always use willing hands (or feet) are Café 2:42, Care Team, Stewardship Team (lawn care and property maintenance), Worship Team, Children’s Church helpers, Ushers, Greeters. The prayer of the Elders is that we see most of the congregation willingly serving in some area. For more information contact Harvey Overturf. If you have questions, concerns are suggestions about our church feel free to contact any of the Elders: Jim Hoover, Jeff Kraft, Todd Monge, Harvey Overturf, Bob Owens, Josh Reese, Bill Schrieber or Chuck Zaugg. FEATURED AUTHOR Janette Oke Please be in prayer for the team leaving July 11 to go to Slovakia. They are finishing up preparations and getting ready to travel. Please pray for travel mercies and to get over jetlag quickly. Pray for families that are left in the states. Pray for each team member as they fulfill By Mary Kahl the roles they have been assigned. Pray for prepared hearts for those they will be interacting with and for the follow up throughout the year that the group there will be making. Pray that our team will be reflecting Jesus’ love to those around them. Praise God for the opportunity that they have to go, the funds received to go, and for their willingness to do this (some are stepping WAY outside of their comfort zones). The team of 8 going to Slovakia in July include Pastor Josh and Claire Reese, Rob and Eli Ribbe, Kerry Kindt, Karen Hess, Abigail and Jonathan Boschke. They will be working alongside Jany and Lenka Simocko, one of the missionary couples we support. Travel dates are July 11 to 24. Romans 10:11-15 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” Mary Kahl On the surface the building progress may seem like nothing much is happening. But there is continual slow and steady work being done. Much of it is underground or under floor so it gets buried very quickly. The foundation is complete. The multi-purpose room floor is poured. The underground/under-floor plumbing is 95% complete. The parking lot lighting is being changed as this is written. By the time you read this the under-floor electrical and AV access channels should be completed. When that is done, the rest of the floors can be poured. The enlarged parking area should be leveled and filled with gravel soon. The main steel supports are scheduled to be delivered and erected in late July. When that is complete the building should close in rapidly. Cornerstone is in the process of manufacturing wall and roof panels in their shop. VOLUNTEER HELP: Once the building is closed in there will be opportunities for volunteers to assist with some of the work. We will soon be recruiting for that. We plan on recruiting a volunteer coordinator. Pray for what part you can play in this. We need to recruit some folks with carpentry experience but we will also need “willing workers”.
