YOUR CHILD, YOUR SCHOOL, YOUR COMMUNITY 45 Thomas Street Boyanup WA 6237 Telephone (08) 9731 5111 Absentee SMS 0437 204 580 Principal: Mr Justin Grasso [email protected] Issue No: 1 February 7th 2017 Welcome back to the 2017 school year. I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday break with your families. I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome our new students and families to Boyanup and look forward to sharing another rewarding and exciting school year with you all. Over the coming weeks, your child’s teacher will make contact with you to discuss classroom organisation, procedures, routines, programs and up-coming events. It is important that there is ongoing contact between teachers and families ensuring a strong partnership regarding the education of your child. Mindfulness at Boyanup This term we have introduced the mindfulness program „MindUP‟ to the students at Boyanup Primary School. „MindUP‟ is a research-based program for educators and children, founded by The Hawn Foundation in collaboration with neuroscientists, cognitive psychologists and educators. „MindUP‟ supports students to deepen their understanding of their own mental processes, expanding their social and emotional awareness and preparing them to be in an effective state of mind to learn. A key strategy of „MindUP‟ is the Core Practice (Meditation). Children learn the habit of deep belly breathing and focused attention. This serves as a conduit through which the children become aware of the connections between brain and body, between what goes on 'inside' and the actual experience. It is expected that children become more resilient, are aware of their impulses, thoughts, feelings and behaviour - enhancing their confidence, pleasure and bolstering enthusiasm for learning. “By focusing our attention and controlling our breath, we can learn to reduce stress and optimise the learning capacity of the brain.” Mindfulness is paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment and non- judgmentally where a calm classroom is a learning classroom. The concept behind Mindfulness and Meditation; • Helps children settle and calm themselves • Develop their focus to learn • Manage their difficult thoughts and emotions • Address impulsive reactions • Reduce stress, anxiety and aggression • Assist the children to learn how to recognise and manage their emotions • Develop empathy and self-awareness • Prepare for „real‟ life beyond school BOYANUP PRIMARY SCHOOL – Your Child, Your School, Your Community Page 1 Before and After School Care Program Last year we surveyed our community to ascertain the viability for the school to operate an Outside School Hours Care Service (Before and Afterschool care). We received a positive response to justify the program to go ahead. When the numbers of those interested were submitted to the OSHClub, (providers of Before and After School Care Programs throughout Australia) who we intended to partner with, they were concerned that the numbers were borderline to fully support the program at Boyanup, particularly from a financial view point, indicating that their experience has shown not all families end up committing as intended and this had to be taken into consideration. OSHClub suggested that they could support the school in the administration only, if the school coordinated the program’s operations and be responsible financially until such time it was deemed 100% viable. The school was happy to adopt this option to trial the program. Over the school holidays we were successful in finding a person who was experienced in child care and had the qualifications required to be the coordinator. The next stage was to register the school as an ‘Approved Service Provider‟. Unfortunately, I have been informed today that the Department of Education does not approve schools to operate a Before and After School Program, as it must be out sourced to private organisations such as the OSHClub. I shall continue to investigate our options and will keep everyone up to date with any progress. ‘You Can Do It’ at Boyanup School The focus for ‘You Can Do It‟ in Term 1 is Resilience. Lessons will focus on: Emotions Different thoughts lead to different emotions Being resilient – what it looks like, sounds like, feels like Strategies to use when faced with challenging and demanding situations Helpful thinking to boost resilience Justin Grasso Principal Boyanup Primary School Staff 2017 Mr Justin Grasso Mrs Jean Rayson Principal Deputy Principal Mrs Tanja Bourne Miss Marion Lewis Mrs Ros Tuia Mrs Kirsty Reely Mrs Desiree Purcell Mr Dean Dixon Mr Geoff Wilson Kindergarten PP (Not Tues) PP (Tues, Thurs) Year 1/2 Year 2/3 Year 4/5 & Phys Ed Year 6 Mrs Holly Moore Mrs Kelly Drust Mrs Leanne Hotter Miss Kelly Crabtree Kindergarten/PP Ed Assistant Ed Assistant Ed Assistant Ed Assistant Mrs Loretta Roberts Mrs Amy O’Leary Miss Kelly Owen Registrar (Not Wed) School Officer (Tues, Wed) Administrative Assistant Mrs Angela Brimson Ms Sara-Jane Raffan Mrs Sue Daly Mrs Natalie Liley Library, Ed Assistant Music (Mon) Visual Arts (Wed, Thurs) AUSLAN & Support Teacher (Tues, Fri) Miss Linda Kings Ms Cathryn Quadrio Mrs Sheree Cousens Gardener Head Cleaner Cleaner Mrs Lois Maynard School Chaplain (Wed) BOYANUP PRIMARY SCHOOL – Your Child, Your School, Your Community Page 2 Term Dates First Term dates for Students 1st February – 7th April Second Term dates for Students 26th April – 30th June Third Term dates for Students 17th July – 22nd September Fourth Term dates for students 9th October – 14th December 2017 School Development Days Students do not attend school on the following days as staff will be undertaking Professional Development training: Term 1: Friday 3rd March Term 2: Monday 24th April Term 3: To Be Advised School Fees, Portfolios and Student Update Forms All families have now been issued with a statement for the 2017 Voluntary Contributions and charges. These voluntary contributions go a long way to supporting the schools’ budget in providing funds to assist with teaching consumables. Thanks to everyone who has made their payment already! Each student at Boyanup Primary has an assessment task file to collect samples of their work throughout the year. If you haven’t already collected and paid for your child’s file in the office (Year 1 - Year 6) you are asked to do so as soon as possible to allow students to start storing their work samples. Student Update Forms: these forms show what details the school has on each child’s record. Please make changes as necessary and return them to school so we can update your child’s records. Even if there are no changes, we ask that you sign the last page and return it to the school office. It is important that the school is kept up to date of any changes throughout the year, particularly contact phone numbers and address. School Absentees If your child is absent from school, please SMS 0437 204 580 with a brief explanation. Alternatively, you can send a note to school with your child on their return. Uniforms School uniforms are available from the front office, including a small selection of second-hand items. We offer a limited variety of black shorts, skorts and track-pants for convenience. These items can also be purchased through alternative clothing department stores as they do not require the school logo. We are encouraging students to wear their faction sports shirt on Fridays as we implement our sports program leading up to the Faction Carnival at the end of Term 1. If you are not sure what faction your child is in, please ask at the front office – it will be either Redgum (red) or Preston (blue). New Faction Sports Shirt - a polo style with a collar and screen printed logo will be available to purchase soon. There is a sample in the front office for you to view. We are currently getting a quote for the screen printing. If you do require a faction shirt in the interim, there is a small amount of the ‘round-neck style’ t-shirts available to purchase for $6, otherwise a t-shirt in the appropriate faction colour (with no logos) can be worn. BOYANUP PRIMARY SCHOOL – Your Child, Your School, Your Community Page 3 Welcome to our Kindy Class of 2017! It also ties into the schools ANZAC preparations. We do this by each child painting a picture on fabric which is made into a laundry bag by myself and other volunteer sewers. Each bag uses 1 metre of fabric so donations of bright, colourful, plain or novelty fabric – suitable for men and women, would be greatly appreciated! The Boyanup Op Shop last year donated good quality sheets which I’ve already made into the liners for our new bags. Why Do We Do This? In the Defence Forces they have a standard colour for their laundry bags so, by individualising bags it makes them easily visible among the 100’s being sent to the laundry. It also helps with morale while our personnel are away from their family and friends. For more information, go to Aussie Hero Quilt and Laundry Bags – blogspot, to read more about this very important morale boosting service people around Australia participate in. Any donations of suitable fabric can be left at the front office or dropped into the Pre Primary classroom. School Canteen The School Canteen is open every Friday. Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to go on the canteen roster. HOWEVER, WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS OR WE WON’T BE ABLE TO OPERATE! If you can be part of the canteen team on a Friday please complete the attached form and send back to school ASAP. Roles can include: assisting with food preparation, collating orders and money, packaging the food into lunch wallets and general kitchen assistance. Many thanks, Sarah (Canteen Coordinator) BOYANUP PRIMARY SCHOOL – Your Child, Your School, Your Community Page 4 P & C Information Our AGM will be held on Thursday 2nd March at 9.00am in the staffroom.
