These science tools are used to help people find out information. Hand Lens Use a hand lens to make objects look larger. Hold the hand lens near your face. Move the object until you see it clearly. Magnifying Box Use a magnifying box to make objects look larger. Place the object in the box, and look through the box. Forceps Use forceps to hold small objects so you can see them better or separate them. Main idea and details: What are some objects you might want to use a hand lens to observe? __________________________________________________________________________________________ Ruler Use a ruler to measure length, width, and height. Put the first mark of the ruler at the end of the object. Read the number at the other end of the object. Tape Measure Use a tape measure to measure length, width, and height. Use a tape measure to measure around an object. Dropper Use a dropper to place small amounts of a liquid on or in something. Squeeze the bulb of the dropper. Then put the dropper in the liquid, and slowly stop squeezing. To drop the liquid, slowly squeeze the bulb again. Measuring Cup Use a measuring cup to measure a liquid. Pour the liquid into the cup. Place the cup on a table. When the liquid stops moving, read the mark on the cup. Main idea and details: Why is a measuring cup a useful science tool? __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ Balance Use a balance to measure the mass of an object. Place the object on one side of the balance. Place masses on the other side. Add or remove masses until the two sides of the balance are even. Thermometer Use a thermometer to measure temperature. Place the thermometer where you want to measure the temperature. On the thermometer, read the number next to the top of liquid. Main idea and details: Why is a thermometer a science tool? __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ Checking for understanding 1. How are a ruler and a tape measure alike? __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ dropper forceps ruler tape measure thermometer measuring cup magnifying box hand lens Use the words in the box to fill in the following statements. 1. A _______________________ and a _____________________________________________ help you see small objects. 2. The ____________________________ help you hold small objects. 3.
