City of Medicine Hat Parks and Recreation Department OUTDOOR RINKS: ADOPT-A-RINK PROGRAM ===================================================================================== General The Adopt-a-Rink program has been successfully operated for the past 20 years in the City of Medicine Hat The City of Medicine Hat currently has in its inventory 4 high board arenas and 6 low board skating areas that can be developed and operated. Each area is set up in a park environment and has a nearby water service and in many cases outdoor lighting. City of Medicine Hat - Parks and Recreation Department Rink Location High Board Rinks East Glen Rink Jefferies Park Riverside Rink Strathcona Rink Southlands Rink East Glen Drive SE 8th Street & 4th Avenue NE 1st and 2nd Avenue NE 5th Street & Minto Avenue SE Southlands Drive SE Low Board Rinks 16th Street NE Central Park Palliser Crescent River Heights Park Upland Drive Park Viterra Park (Hull Way) 16 Street Park NE (Alley) 11 Street & 3rd Avenue SE Palliser Way SW In alley behind 4th Street SW 2nd Street & 2nd Avenue SE Hull Way NE (on trail in Viterra Park) Service Objectives Provide, through volunteers, a safe and economical outdoor recreation activity for neighbourhoods within the City of Medicine Hat Provide a high quality, outdoor skating surface, that has “local ownership” and support so that youth and adults can access and participate in a spontaneous, non-regulated activities such as but are not limited to: hockey, figure skating, recreation skating, skating games, and ball hockey. What is required to Adopt- a-Rink? Ideally 2-5 volunteers per location Build the ice in layers late in the year and maintain the facility weekly until the spring thaw On a weekly basis remove the accumulation of snow and provide a fresh flood of water to fill in cracks and remove bumps Ensures that the shelter is in good condition. If a major snowfall occurs and you need assistance to remove the snow or have any major maintenance issues contact the Facilities Foreman at 403.529.8357 or contact [email protected] What does the City provide? The City ensures that the boards (high or low) are in an acceptable condition for the making of ice. Installs low boards in the fall and removes low boards in the spring. Ensure that the water source, water services key, hoses, etc. are in good condition Ensure that the shelter is in good condition at the start of the season. Assists volunteers with snow removal if a major snowfall occurs that requires heavier machinery to remove the snow.
