We’ve started the new financial year with a name change and I’m pleased to announce that as of 1 April we officially become the London Leadership Academy. The change in name is to help us align better with the NHS Leadership Academy, who approved the change, as did our stakeholder reference group at our meeting in March. We hope you approve too. As the London Leadership Academy we will continue to work with healthcare professionals across the capital to deliver a range of outstanding leadership development programmes that make a real difference to staff and organisations responsible for delivering healthcare to patients and service users. This includes the local delivery of national programmes on behalf of the NHS Leadership Academy, including the Mary Seacole programme and the new Frontline programme for nurses and midwives, as well as a wide range of exciting and innovative development initiatives aimed at addressing specific leadership needs in London. I hope you enjoyed reading about the future leadership for London research that we mentioned in the March edition of our newsletter. The aim of the research is to identify and address the future healthcare leadership challenges in London. We’ve already had some fantastic discussions with a range of stakeholders across the NHS in London, and are planning more engagement over the coming weeks. If you’d like to join us in the debate and help us frame our future development offers in London that will support and create the healthcare leaders for the future, please email us to find out how you can get involved, and read on for further opportunities to take part. Following our name change, we can now be emailed at [email protected], and our website has changed to www.londonleadershipacademy.nhs.uk. Anne-Marie Archard Head of the London Leadership Academy London Leadership Academy Newsletter April 2014 NEWS Darzi Fellows – recruitment underway for successful projects Following the success of five previous years of our Fellowship in Clinical Leadership programme (also known as Darzi Fellows), recruitment for the sixth cohort is now in progress. London Leadership Academy have commissioned the Centre for Innovation in Health Management (CIHM) at the University of Leeds to deliver this sixth year of the innovative and bespoke programme. It aims to develop organisational and leadership skills necessary for our future clinical leaders. During the programme, fellows will work on a major service improvement project under the guidance of a nominated sponsor who applied to host a Darzi project. In total we have awarded 62 places and organisations are currently recruiting fellows for their successful projects. A breakdown of the projects, organisations and contact details can be found on our website. For further information email Kashmira Sunni or call 020 7862 8839. Everyone expressed that it was an inspiring evening and a stimulating insight into Anne’s leadership journey. Feedback included: “I found the session extremely valuable. Anne was very personable, open and candid about her experiences on the way to her current role, and since she has arrived. I found it particularly interesting to hear her views on the importance of understanding her own values and where she gets her energy from, and the very practical steps she has taken to look after herself so she is able to maintain that energy.” Anne Rainsberry, NHS England Regional Director for London “It was fantastic to hear the experiences of a very successful woman who has maintained authenticity and achieved her success through ethical means…The particular things which I have considered are the importance of energetic leadership and also looking after yourself as a leader to ensure that you can function in an energetic manner, this is one area which I think I may have overlooked!” We will be running drop-in sessions for members of the Nye Bevan cohort in London every last Wednesday of each month and inviting guest speakers to talk about their own career paths. If you are attending Nye Bevan and would like to know more about the drop-ins or future talks, please email Jonathan Pam. The new 360 degree feedback and self-assessment tools associated with the Healthcare Leadership Model are expected to go live soon. If you have previously been trained as a facilitator for the LF 360 degree feedback tool, you will be invited to attend a 2 hour briefing session on the revised model and tools. This session will cover background to the Model, an overview of the associated tools, and summary of the e-learning refresher training which will be made available to all existing facilitators. These briefing sessions will take place during the last two weeks of May. For further details and to register your interest please email Runa Begum. Participants who are currently, or who have previously been, involved in Paired Learning were invited to share their first hand experiences and success stories. An array of speakers took part from a range of trusts including, but not limited to, Imperial College London, Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust and Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. Co-founder of the programme, Robert Klaber, Consultant Paediatrician at Imperial College London, provided an insight into Paired Learning, and the exchange of experiences was followed by further discussions around inspirational ideas and focus for the future. As well as celebrating the fantastic achievements of the programme so far, the evening also helped to raise awareness for those who are interested in participating in the programme in the future. We look forward to working with many more people and hearing further success stories over the coming months. For more information about Paired Learning, contact Kay Buhari. [email protected] Capital People Pilot London is arguably the most ethically and culturally diverse city in the world. As such, so are the many issues it faces across public services and more so within the NHS. Our innovative Capital People programme has been employing the principles of Human Rights as a means to help managers and teams to confront, understand and navigate the challenges posed through managing this diversity on a day to day basis. By bringing in the attitude of a more humane office space we mean to create more inclusive and equitable organisations. The programme has received some fantastic feedback from participants so far, including: Delivered in conjunction with our partners, Brap, Freda Consultants, People Opportunities and Goldsmiths Collage, the year 1 programme has worked with a number of trusts to pilot this work. We are developing three case studies from these pilots (The Whittington Hospital Trust, Greenwich CCG and St George’s Hospital) as a means to demonstrate the incredible impact this work is making both with individuals and their organisations and, as it begins to roll out further, the impact this work can have across the capital. “I will use the different approaches when dealing with challenging behaviour. Also be better equipped with the knowledge and how I tackle poor performance.” “[Capital People] exceeded my expectations. I didn’t really know what to expect. I found the day both informative and reflective.” “Yes I would recommend it to others – I think it is useful as an opportunity to unpack the subject and consider my own opinions on the subject.” For more information on the training we are rolling out for the Capital People programme, please view our brochure, or email Jonathan Pam. The workshops were facilitated on behalf of the NHS Leadership Academy by The Hay Group. Each day was attended by 70 different participants who explored various leadership styles through group work and role play. Feedback has been very positive about the programme, including: “I’m really enjoying being part of the Mary Seacole programme, the content and variety of input and materials is well balance. It is great to have the opportunity to learn from other people’s experiences” The Spring 2014 intake has just commenced with over 200 London participants enrolled. For more information regarding the programme visit the Leadership Academy website. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson programme Over 275 people remain on the London expression of interest list for the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson programme. We recently approached people on the waiting list to see if they could commit to the next intake which has just 192 places nationally. London has secured at least 39 of these places, and work continues to allocate these places among those who are eligible and available. This second intake of the programme will commence in June and will run over 24 months, with further intakes planned for the future.
