the ivy and the tower A publication of The Hamilton and Alexandra College No 56 June 2011 from the editor A win in the GSSSA Athletics for the first time in 21 years heralded a wonderful start to the 2011 year at College. The win was the culmination of some exciting individual and team performances with College claiming ultimate success in the Boys’ U21 and U17 and Girls’ U17 age groups as well as the Girls’ Aggregate. The construction of the new Music and Performing Arts Centre continues to dominate the physical landscape at College. As the building gradually takes shape it is clear that the final product will be a world-class facility for the teaching of Music, Drama and Hospitality. It will also provide an outstanding venue for conferences, large meetings and College reunions. The building will be officially opened in August. This year our Old Collegians will gather for four reunions: the biennial 40+-Year TurnBackTime Luncheon as well as the 10-Year (Class of 2001), 20-Year (Class of 1991) and 30-Year (Class of 1981) reunions (see page 14 for more details). We are excited about some recent initiatives – our online alumni directory and Facebook page – aimed at improving communication between the College and our past students. We hope you enjoy the significantly increased amount of Old Collegians’ News in this edition as a result (see pages 11-14). Please send us your news via our alumni directory – go to the login portal on the home page at www.hamiltoncollege.vic.edu.au Our 2010 Year 12 students performed admirably to produce outstanding VCE results (see page 4), with a staggering 96% receiving their first round offer for a university place. With the completion of the Music and Performing Arts Centre later in the year, the first school production to be performed in the new Centre and a music trip to Tasmania in July, we have much to look forward to once again as College enters another exciting decade. Of course, there is truth to that; it gives us the opportunity to spend more time with family and friends, enjoy a few sleep ins and have fewer phone calls. The school is very peaceful during the holiday period! The quieter time also provides an excellent opportunity to dream and plan. Thegreatestachievementswereatfirst, andforatime, dreams. Theoaksleepsintheacorn.James Collier Along with the Head of Middle Years Mrs Julia Winter Cooke, I recently attended a conference titled OurSchool,OurFuture, facilitated by several renowned educators. It focused on building innovation, moving beyond strategic planning to strategic navigation and recognising the skills and capacity we are trying to foster in each child that will prepare them to be the leaders and problems solvers of the 21st Century. Already acknowledged for being a leader in school innovation, we strive to become a school that aspires not only to best practice, but nextpractice. Then, by casting back in steps to 2011 . . . What should we be doing right now to bring this future picture to reality? At the conference, we worked to articulate the picture of The Hamilton and Alexandra College in 2020 and 2030. We worked to define our future-focused school, identifying the capabilitiesandcapacities we aspire to nurture in our students, our staff and our community. Having further established the vision of what we want and need our school to look like in 2011 and beyond, we are better equipped to navigate our current 2009-2014 Strategic Plan, appropriately titled BuildingCapabilityand Capacity: we are able to cast back, connecting the future and present, so we can build and innovate for the exciting journey ahead. Over its 140-year history College has consistently sought to reinvent itself, mindful to offer something beyond the norm, but always with an eye (or two) on how to broadly nurture the precious people we work with. This caused me to imagine looking through a window and experiencing our school in the future, 5, 10 and even 20 years from now . . . What would we want to see? How would our classrooms look? Bruce S Simons Principal How would teaching and learning occur? What skills would we seek to instil in our children to prepare them for the next generation of work and indeed to solve the intractable problems of the 21st Century? What resources would we need to enable and lead changing paradigms? the ivy and the tower / 03 vce results 2010 2011 College Scholars: Laura Doeven (99.3), Hannah Wootton (98.25), Eloise Noske (97.05) and Conrad Hamill (98.5) with Principal Bruce Simons, Hugh Delahunty, Dr Geoff Handbury AO, Rev Isabel Thomas Dobson (Moderator of the Uniting Church) and Rev Peter Cook at the College’s 12th Annual Scholars Assembly held in February. Their outstanding results have enabled them to begin their future career “journey of a thousand miles” (Confucius). The students selected a diverse and challenging range of options and approaches to best meet their individual needs and goals based on a detailed exploration and research process. Areas of Study Many offers were in the fields of Health, Science and Business which are among the predicted hot job areas in the next decade and beyond. While many students chose to study generalist degrees (in particular Arts and Science) most students chose vocational or named degrees. Double degrees were also well represented. For those students who chose to defer their tertiary offers, overseas tutoring positions were popular, while other students opted for employment in communities close to home. While the majority of students received tertiary offers, there were also students who were successful in gaining apprenticeships in their area of interest, particularly in the mechanical industry area. Institutions While the two most popular tertiary destinations are The University of Melbourne and Deakin University, the range of institutions selected shows that our students consider a wide range of options. 25% chose to study at regional campuses. We look forward to following the progress of these students as they take up the challenges of a rapidly changing world, engage in life-long learning, develop an open mind and take advantage of the opportunities ahead. Louise Manifold Head of Career Development the ivy and the tower / 05 student leaders Profile: School Captains 2011 – Callum Dark and Alice Winter Cooke In your role as School Captain, what is important to you? Callum: The opportunity to give back to the school is very important, and to be a role model for the younger students. I remember back to when I was in Year 7, and I believe that having an older student who is approachable is very important. The weekly meetings with Mr Simons and Mr MacLean give us the chance to discuss any ideas we have. Alice: I believe that to respect, encourage and support each student is imperative. Callum and I are positioned as role models, so striving to set a positive example is vital. In the words of Indira Gandhi, “leadershipatonetimemeantmuscles;buttodayitmeansgettingalong withpeople”. This simple message highlights the importance of effective people skills and communication and is essential in our role. What do you bring to the role? Callum: I like to stay on the same level as the students, as the School Captain is the students’ representative. The students need someone they can relate to, so that’s what I try to do. Spicing up assemblies is one of the things that I think helps with this. Make them laugh I always say, it eases the tension. Alice: During my 12 years at College, I have been on six camps (a total of 50 days!), from canoeing down the Glenelg River to trekking around the often wet Otways National Park to spending four weeks in China. As a student participating in these experiences, I was given the opportunity to learn many valuable skills: to show independence and develop communication and leadership skills and to work within a team to survive the challenges. What do you find special about College? Callum: The culture is something quite special. The teachers really care about the students and ‘go the extra mile’ to make sure that students feel accepted and always strive to do their best in all areas of school. Alice: College not only provides a stimulating environment in which to learn, it also has an optimistic, happy atmosphere where people help each other out and support one another. As School Captains, how would you like to be remembered? Callum: I’ve found that some School Captains didn’t really involve themselves with the students and so students didn’t know what they did. I would be happy to be the guy that people say, “remember that School Captain – he was great wasn’t he?” Alice: As being a positive, influential, helpful leader who strove to achieve her potential. ...Irememberback towhenIwasin Year7,andIbelieve thathavingan olderstudentwho isapproachable isveryimportant. ...strivingto setapositive exampleisvital. 2011 School Captains: Alice Winter Cooke and Callum Dark 06 / learning and teaching 2011 Junior House Captains: (Back Row) Ieva Hampson (Head of Junior Campus), Sydney Kamerman, Claire Paulet, Emily Johnston, Nikki Helm, (Front Row) Millie Youngman, Tom Baring, Sam Rowe, Dylan Cunningham new staff Profile: New Staff 2011 – Penny Callinan and David Wilson Staff profiles will become a regular feature of the magazine. In this edition we are pleased to welcome two teachers who are new to College and to Hamilton. What do you teach at College? I am teaching Year 1 in the beautiful Myrniong homestead. Where were you teaching before College? I was at Grimwade House (the junior school of Melbourne Grammar) for 10 years where I taught Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 and was a year level coordinator for a number of years. I have also spent time in Sydney where I taught at Abbotsleigh (a girls’ school). What particular skills, experience or interests do you bring? I love teaching in the early years and am particularly interested in early literacy and numeracy. Foundation skills are so important as they form the springboard for a child’s academic development and interest in learning in later years. There is nothing more rewarding than being involved in a child’s reading development. It may sound twee, but you really do watch a child’s world open up when they become a reader and that is very exciting. I was a nervous maths student at school, so I know how crucial a good start is to developing an interest in number and problem solving. I am very keen to develop a love of maths in my students. What do you find special about College? The Junior Campus is a really special place to work. I love that the children all know one another so well. They are a very friendly, engaged and independent bunch. The regular delivery of farm fresh eggs from my students is just one of the lovely things that I am enjoying about country life! I have been made to feel very welcome by all the College staff and I am pleased to be working with such a professional and enthusiastic team. What is important to you as an educator? We need to allow children to develop at their own pace and within a context that supports the development of the whole person: spiritually, emotionally, academically, socially and physically. We need to give them opportunities to take risks in their learning and to explore how they learn best. Children have an innate sense of wonder about the world and its possibilities – my role as an educator is to nurture this and to help develop each child’s potential. Penny Callinan Year 1 Teacher, Junior Campus What do you teach at College? I am Head of English at the Senior Campus, teaching VCE English to Year 12 and English to Years 10, 8 and 7. I am also coaching basketball. Where were you teaching before College? My previous teaching post was as the Second Master (Deputy Principal) at Kelly College, a co-educational boarding and day public school (fee paying) in Devon, UK. I was teaching senior English and had previously been Head of the English Faculty and a Housemaster. I also coached the Ists Rugby (Union) team, cricket and soccer. I have also taught in North Yorkshire, in a Maintained (government) school just north of London and in the USA. How have you found the move and what do you like about College? Learning a new educational system and new terminology has been challenging but also exciting. I like the school very much and it is clear it has a forward-looking approach. I like the healthy blend of traditional values and cutting-edge innovation. The students are clearly proud of their school, one of the real indicators of a school that is flourishing. Similarly, I am very impressed with the expertise and the sheer energy and commitment of the teaching staff and the tremendous relationship between the teaching fraternity and the student body. What is important to you as an educator? The students should be at the heart of all we do. At College they are. It is important we provide opportunities, guidance and direction to all students to allow each one to achieve at their optimum level, and to equip them as best we can for their lives beyond school. I believe we should be seeking to enthuse, to challenge and to extend all our students. I am 100% in support of a holistic approach – that is, offering opportunities not just in the academic dimension but also in cultural, sporting, musical, dramatic and outdoor spheres. In a well organised school with a dedicated staff, academic and co-curricular achievements can coexist in harmony. I sense this happens at College and it is one of the reasons I have found it relatively easy to settle here. Worldly Insights I did work experience at Walt Disney Company in Melbourne in March. I had so much fun, learnt a lot and got a feel for the way they ran the business. It was a shock when I first got there because the offices were covered in posters and teddies of Disney films and characters. I hadn’t expected to see a giant Mickey Mouse teddy and other characters all over the desks of the people who work there. I had imagined white walls, dull people, small offices and coffee, but it was nothing like that. I did a lot of small jobs: filing, shredding (I wanted to go and buy a shredder after seeing how much fun it could be), watching movies, talking, flicking through magazines and papers, sitting in on a meeting and sending some letters. It sounds hard I know – watching Grey’s Anatomy and Toy Story 3 was just part of my job. When sitting in on the meeting I had huge insight into what the business is like: how they plan and what they can ask for when selling DVDs in stores. I am so grateful that they let me do this because I got a great feel for the company and what they do. Everyone was so friendly and I can’t thank Walt Disney Company enough. Work experience was a great learning experience for me. Georgie Gough (Year 10) during her work experience at Walt Disney Company 08 / college students Georgie Gough Year 10 from the archives 40 Years Ago (1971) Official celebrations to mark the beginning of the centenary years of the Hamilton District and Alexandra College began on 6 May 1971 with the opening and naming of the new oval at Myrniong. The Chairman of the School Council, Rev W McM Speirs welcomed invited guests. The oval was officially opened by John Hyde, an Old Collegian who played football for Geelong in the Victorian League. The guest of honour was Mr JLC Young after whom the oval was named. Mr Young assisted with the development of the oval and played an important part in the establishment of other sports facilities in Hamilton. 20 Years Ago (1991) During the weekend of 22 and 23 March more than 500 Old Collegians, staff, family and friends returned to the school to celebrate the achievement of our 120th anniversary. Students from as far back as 1911 renewed contact with the school and several past Heads returned, including Dr Frank Shann (1945-1950), Mrs Mary Waters (1962-1971) and Mr John Shilliday (1972-1977). The weekend involved an old-fashioned sports competition, the school dinner dance and an archive display organised by Mrs Jan Welsh and Mrs Jocelyn Williams. The weekend’s activities culminated with an Achievement Dinner enjoyed by more than 200 Old Collegians. Chairman of Council, Mr Richard Walter announced the decision by Council to establish the Hamilton College Foundation. The Foundation was launched officially the following year with Mr Mark Brian (1956) Chairman of the Hamilton College Council 1977-1987, invited to lead the planning committee. After 17 years of outstanding service to Hamilton College, Mrs Ann Scott retired at the end of 1991. Mrs Scott was appointed Head of the Junior School in 1974. She was instrumental in seeing that the Junior School was moved from the present Art and Music Centre to the Myrniong Campus in 1979. During her time at the Junior Campus, TheVines and Oaks buildings were constructed and a strong curriculum developed. the ivy and the tower / 09 community events Principal Bruce Simons with College parents in Shanghai Staying Connected with our Community Current College families, alumni and staff have attended and enjoyed a range of events during the past months. She loved school and particularly enjoyed sport. During WW2 Tip served as a Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD), working at the Heidelberg Military Hospital. Tip married Old Collegian Bill Melville in 1942. Her 3 children all attended College: Jill Gretton Watson (Melville 1959), Sally Powling (Melville 1961) and John Melville (1960). During this time Tip was actively involved in the College and was president of Parents & Friends. Many of Tip’s grandchildren also attended College: Georgina Ross (Powling 1989), Amanda Mithen (Powling 1992), Sara Baulch (Powling 1995), James Melville (2001) and Rebecca Melville (2003). Bill Melville died in 1975. Tip married John Hutton in 1983. Tip will be missed for her cheery disposition and the interest she always showed in others. Sally Powling (Melville 1961) Muriel Macgugan (Black) 1922-2010 Muriel attended Alexandra College from 1932 to 1937. She loved her school days at College and joined in all school activities with enthusiasm. Muriel worked as a receptionist in Melbourne after school. She married Don Macgugan after he had returned from active service in the Middle East and New Guinea and they settled on a farm at Dunkeld. Their 4 children attended Hamilton College: Ian (1963-64), Helen (1964-68), Simon (1967-73) and Clare (1972-77). Muriel was very actively involved in Parents & Friends and the family has vivid memories of the preparations and cooking for the annual College fetes held in the Town Hall. Muriel continued to have a strong interest in the College after her children had graduated and her grandson Andrew attended Hamilton College from 1997-2001. Muriel passed away peacefully at the Penshurst Nursing Home aged 88. Heather Macgugan Angus William Bryher Wilson 1999-2011 The College community was deeply saddened by the news of Angus’ tragic death. Affectionately known as ‘Gus’ by his classmates, Angus joined College in 2008 as a Year 3 student, making the long bus trip from Lake Bolac each day with younger brother Archie. Angus quickly found his feet at College. His friendly disposition and consideration for others made him extremely well received by his peers. Angus was a ‘farm boy’ who loved to ride his horse and the farm bikes, go yabbying and spend time with his dog, and his broad base of knowledge and experiences were valued by his classmates. An accomplished sportsman, Angus was actively involved in sport at school – he competed at an inter-school level in Athletics, Cross Country and Swimming (Zone and State Championships) and he played College Basketball, Hockey and Football. Being a keen Berry House competitor, Angus didn’t let a broken arm prevent him from competing in the 100m hurdles event at this year’s House Athletics! This year, Angus was awarded the Year 6 leadership position of Junior Campus Cricket Captain. Angus was a conscientious and positive student who showed a determined effort to make the most of every learning opportunity. Angus will be remembered for his ‘have-a-go’ attitude, affable nature, willingness to share with others, loyalty, sporting prowess, and his ever-present beautiful smile. He will be remembered fondly and often by all who knew him.
