Keeping Your Mind Healthy
This month is World Alzheimer’s Month and with
that comes the awareness of this serious disease
that has affected many of our loved ones both past
and present.
Dementia is an overall term used to describe
diseases and conditions characterized by memory
decline or other cognitive skills that affects a
person’s ability to complete everyday activities.
Studies have shown that mental stimulation may
protect the brain. Researchers have found the more
often a person engages in a mental-stimulating
activity, the less beta-amyloid builds up in the brain.
Beta-amyloid is a plaque that accumulates on the
brain of an individual with Alzheimer’s.
Engaging in mentally challenging activities in the
early and middle years seemed to be important for
preventing the accumulation of this plaque.
Researchers found the brains of seniors, who
engaged in mentally stimulating activities, most often
were comparable to those of young people. Finally,
those seniors with the least mental stimulation had
brains that were similar to those of people with
Alzheimer’s.
Not only can you engage in mental stimulation to
keep your mind active, but there are other activities
that you can involve yourself in that will stimulate you
mentally. Those are: staying involved in a lifetime of
learning, reading, writing, working crossword and/or
other puzzles, attend lectures and plays, play
games, garden, memory exercises, physical
exercise, and a good diet.
Start with something small like a daily walk. After
a while, add another small change to stay mentally
active!

Dumb questions to ponder: 
How come we choose from just two people for
President but fifty for Miss America?
If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is
there a song about him?
Can fat people go skinny-dipping?
Who was the first person to look at a cow and
say “I think I’ll squeeze these dangly things and
drink what comes out?”
Can you get cavities in your dentures if you use
to much artificial sweetener?
If crime doesn’t pay….does that mean my job is
a crime?
Do cemetery workers prefer the graveyard shift?
Do fish get thirsty?
Do hummingbirds hum because they don’t know
the words?
Do people in Australia call the rest of the world
“up-over?”
Do pilots take crash-courses?
What happens when you get “half scared to
death” twice?
If it’s tourist season why can’t we shoot them?
Now That’s Funny!
There was a lady in her 90’s
who became sort of a local
celebrity because she had
recently gotten married. The
local news station decided to interview her.
The interviewer asked questions about how it
felt to be a newlywed in her nineties. “This isn’t
my first husband, so it’s not much different
than the others,” she replied with a smile.
“Oh? How many husbands have you had?” the
interviewer inquired. “This one is my fourth,”
she replied. “I was married in my twenties to a
banker, then in my forties to a
circus performer. After that I married a
preacher.”
“What does your current husband do?” ”Oh,
he’s a funeral director.” The interviewer
laughed and then asked how she came to
marry these men from such different
backgrounds and personalities. “It always
made sense to me,” she replied. “I married one
for the money, two for the show, three to get
ready, and four to go.”

Bob was in trouble. He forgot his wedding
anniversary. His wife was really mad.
She told him, “Tomorrow morning, I expect to
find a gift in the driveway that goes from zero
to 200 in six seconds, AND IT BETTER BE
THERE!”
If money doesn’t grow on trees then why do
banks have branches?
The next morning he got up
early and left for work. When his
wife woke up, she looked out
the window, and sure enough
there was a box gift-wrapped in
the middle of the driveway.
Confused, the wife put on her
robe, ran out to the driveway, and brought the
box back in the house. She opened it and
found a brand new bathroom scale.
Can you cry underwater?
Bob has been missing since Friday.
If one synchronized swimmer drowns, do the
others drown too?
Why do all the superheroes wear their
underpants on the outside?

Now That’s
Funny, cont.!!
Visiting his grandparents, a small boy opened
the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he
fingered through the old pages. Suddenly,
something fell out. He picked it up and found
that it was an old leaf that had been pressed flat
between the pages. "Mama, look what I found,"
he called out.
"What have you got there, dear?" his
mother asked."
With astonishment in his voice, the boy
answered, "I think it's Adam's underwear!"
Fall Trivia
Tidbits
The Full Moon on the
8th is the traditional "Harvest Moon" because
this is the one that falls closest to the autumn
equinox. Most of the time (2 out of 3 years) the
Harvest Moon is in the month of September.
Sometimes it will occur in October. Its name
comes from the fact that farmers (and Indians)
could harvest their crops by the light of the
moon until late at night. Other names
associated with the “Harvest Moon” are “Full
Corn Moon” and “Barley Moon.”
The leaf colors red, yellow & brown are
in the leaves all year long & only become
exposed when the green chlorophyll
disappears in the fall.
Most leaves fall from trees
because the ends of the branch are
sealed off near the leaf stem to
protect the tree through the long winter months.

My Travel Plans
Puzzle Mania
I have been many places, but I’ve never been in
Cahoots. Apparently, you can’t go alone. You
have to be in Cahoots with someone.
Fill in the digits 1 to 6 in the empty cells so that
around each black field each digit occurs
exactly once. Digits in neighboring cells must
be different.
I’ve also never been in Cognito. I hear no one
recognizes you there. I have, however, been in
Sane. They don’t have an airport; you have to
be driven there. I have made several trips
there, thanks to my children, friends, family, and
work.
I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have
to jump, and I’m not too much for physical
activity anymore.
I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to
go, and I try not to visit there too often.
I’ve been in Flexible but only when it was
important to stand firm.
Sometimes I’m in Capable, and I go there more
often as I’m getting older. One of my favorite
places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the
adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart!
At my age I need all the stimuli I can get!
I may have been in Continent, and I don’t
remember what country I was in. It’s an age
thing. They tell me it is very wet and damp
there.
So laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly!
Well that forgiveness part is up to you!
From one unstable person to another...I hope
everyone is happy in your head.
