The Wonder Of It All
The moon and stars cast a soft glow to the darkness. A gentle wind brought a
chill to the air. The still of the night was broken by sounds of animals in the
distance or the bleating of sheep nearby. A few shepherds were doing what
shepherds do every night; keeping watch over their sheep. Some sheep gazed,
others slept and the snore of shepherds could be heard as they caught a bit of
sleep while others kept watch. They smelled like sheep and wore the same
clothes they had worn for months. All in all this night was no different from
hundreds of others, but little did they know their lives and the world would soon
be forever changed. What seemed like just an ordinary night would become the
most extraordinary one in history. The sky came alive as God truly showed
Himself with an incredible light show. As the sky lit up the shepherds and even
the sheep awakened and turned toward the beautiful brilliance. Not only did
they witness light unlike anything they had ever seen, heavenly voices in song
filled the air and a beautiful person was seen in the light. They were afraid.
Some knelt and others stood in awe. They didn’t know it at the time, but God
was showing them how humility and poverty were being exalted just as the
prophets told from days of old.
Yes, tonight Eternal life would take its first breath and the shepherds would find
hope, love, and peace wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger. Sweet
Baby Jesus, true humanity and true divinity, came alive that holy night. Other
than the parents of the little King, lowly shepherds were the first to see the
greatest Gift God gave to mankind, our Savior Jesus. Imagine being the very first
to see the Messiah Who had been predicted to come for hundreds of years. What
had been mere words from the prophets David, Isaiah, Micah and others was
now real and smelly shepherds were part of the revelation. The prophets said a
virgin would be with child and give birth to a Son, and he would be called
Immanuel. And Isaiah said he would be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty
God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Kings would fall down before
Him and all nations would serve Him. It had been foretold He would come from
the little town of Bethlehem and rule as King over Israel and the world. All this
and more was unfolding right before their eyes. Oh yes, Love came down in the
flesh and would walk among us.
God has a reputation for not coloring between the lines of society. His greatest
message was to lowly shepherds hanging out on a hillside not far from
Bethlehem. Jesus walked among the lost, the despised and the poor. He spent
time with prostitutes, the demon possessed, and tax collectors. Humble
shepherds were lifted and Kings would be removed from their thrones just as
Our Lady said in the Magnificat.
The world changed forever that winter night when God sent Jesus as the Way for
all to come to Him.
