Repeat several times: je m'appelle ...

Do use gestures while speaking as this will help children understanding what you are saying.
Je m'appelle (your name) … Et toi ? (Talking to one child in particular.)

My name is... What is yours?
Je m'appelle (the child says his or her name).
Talking to another child: et toi ?

And you? (Meaning «What is your name?»).
Je m'appelle (the child says his or her name).
Ask again: « et toi ? » to 2 or 3 other children.
Repeat several times the little dialogue below, with the children.
« Bonjour !

Ask the children to practice this short dialogue with each other.
Les petits papiers (10 minutes)
Little papers
Give 2 pieces of paper to each child.
On «paper n°1», ask the children to write:
Je m'appelle [a name of their choice].
Fold and shuffle the «papers n°1».
Each child takes a paper.
Then, ask the children to write the name (which is written on the paper they
have just taken) on the « paper n°2 »,
Each child keeps his or her «paper n°1».
Fold and shuffle the «papers n°2».
Each child takes a « paper n°2 ».
If a child has the same name on his or her 2 papers,
ask him or her to exchange one of his or her papers with another child.
The children go and talk to each other as follows:
A child «A» has taken the 2 following papers:
Je m'appelle Paul.
Anne (= person the child has to find)
The child «A» goes and talk to a child «B» who has taken the 2 following papers:
Je m'appelle Natacha.
Paul (= person the child has to find)

The two children use the dialogue they have just learnt:
Child A : Bonjour !
Child B : Bonjour !
Child A : Je m'appelle Paul. Et toi ?
Child B : Je m'appelle Natacha.
In this example, the child «B» has found the person he was looking for. The child «A» (possibly
helped by the child «B», has to carry on looking for «Anne»...).

Look at each card of the «abécédaire» with the children (in the alphabetical order).
Ask the children to say (in their native language)
what they can see on each picture/card.
Then, say in French the name of the object which is on each card (the children
can repeat after you if they wish to do so):

Equipment : sheets of paper (to draw), pens, pencils (of various colours), rubbers, photocopies of
the «names to match» exercise below (unless you want the children to copy the table).
Bande-dessinée (10 minutes)
Comic
Ask the children to draw/create a short comic (2 or 3 frames)
which describes a first meeting between two characters of their choice.
For the dialogue, they should use what they learnt in the « core lesson ».
In order to help the children, write down the following words on the board:
Bonjour
Je m'appelle...
Et toi ?
Les équivalents (5 minutes)
Equivalents
Prononce each name of the list below, with the children.
Ask the children to try to guess which names are masculine
and which ones are feminine.
Ask the children to match each French name with the English equivalent.

Memory de l'alphabet
Memory game on alphabet
Equipment : Catfish «abécédaire» printed twice (you can download it on catfish-etc.com).
Jeu de « memory » (15 minutes)
Memory game
Put all the cards (upside down) on front of the children.
One after the other, the children choose and look at two cards.
If the two cards are identical, the child keeps them and play again.
If the two cards are different, the child put them back on the table
and it is someone else's turn.
Everytime a child takes a card, repeat once or twice the name of the letter on it. (You can also ask
the children to repeat after you.)
