ROOTS FREE TICKETS TO GREAT EVENTS Seattle and surrounding communities provide many opportunities for Treehouse families to attend all kinds of shows, sporting events and other fun activities and experiences at no cost. Treehouse often has tickets to places like the Woodland Park Zoo, Seattle Aquarium, Seattle Children’s Museum, Pacific Science Center, and more available for families. Eligibility Treehouse can provide funding for summer activities for youth currently placed in King County (or with a case held in King County). Unsure whether or not your youth is eligible? Summer Camp Summer camp provides a great outlet for kids and teens to make new friends, develop and refine skills, and have fun in a new environment. If you need help selecting a camp for your youth, we can help! Teen Leadership and Academic Opportunities For middle and high school youth engaged in Treehouse’s Graduation Success Program, Treehouse Education Specialists can help youth connect with leadership opportunities, camps, internships, summer jobs and other activities that support their goals. Encourage your youth to talk with their Education Specialist about their options. In addition to recommending summer opportunities, Treehouse Education Specialists will continue to provide NON PROFIT ORG. Summer is just around the corner and it’s not too early to start planning for a fun and engaging break. We encourage all students to stay engaged during time off from school by learning outside the classroom, and can help pay for the experiences that align with your youth’s specific interests and academic needs. VOLUNTEER BIO RICK REUTER GRADUATION SUCCESS VOLUNTEER Treehouse provides a wide range of supports to help students in foster care experience success at school. For middle and high school students participating in Treehouse’s Graduation Success program, Education Specialist provide education planning, coaching, and support to students on a one-on-one basis. But what if a Treehouse student needs additional academic support outside of school hours? That’s where Graduation Success volunteers like Rick Reuter step in to help. support for youth over the summer in order to prepare students for the upcoming school year. Signing Up Your Youth for Summer Opportunities If your youth is eligible for Treehouse Summer Opportunites: 1) Research an opportunity and complete all necessary registration forms 2) Call or email Treehouse for funding approval 3) Once you have approval, mail or drop off the completed registration form at Treehouse and our Little Wishes Program will send in the forms and payment for you Credit Retrieval If your student needs to make up missing credits over break, contact their school or Education Specialist. They can research appropriate opportunities in your community. Treehouse staff and volunteers can support youth working through credit retrieval courses and exams throughout the summer. Remember, early summer preparation pays off and Treehouse can help! Rick, a Boeing systems engineer and husband of a middle school science teacher, has a natural gift for helping students understand complicated math and science concepts. After tutoring many family friends and international exchange students, Rick learned that he could use his knowledge and skills to also support Treehouse students and has volunteered with the Graduation Success program for four years now. Each semester, Rick meets with 2-3 students one-on-one in the Rainier Valley area of Seattle to provide homework help and tutoring for students in math and science classes. He is known for his patient and caring approach that enables him to connect with students at their level. He always goes the extra mile to help students really understand the material and even creates his own problems to augment their learning. In addition to providing tutoring and homework help, Graduation Success volunteers like Rick can provide credit recovery support, resume building, senior project help, job shadowing and other academic services for students. Many volunteers come from academic backgrounds and are willing to share their skills with students in a variety of ways. Do you have a student in Treehouse’s Graduation Success program that could benefit from the support of a volunteer tutor like Rick? Talk with your youth about requesting the support of a Treehouse Graduation Success volunteer. All requests should be make through a youth’s Treehouse Education Specialist. April Girls’ Group: 4/2, Career Planning | May Girls’ Group: 5/7, End of Year Celebration College Shop: In order to inspire and celebrate the college plans of many of our teens, the Wearhouse has been collecting donations of college wear (think university t-shirts, sweatshirts, and other swag) to help students get ready for their first day on campus. If your teen would like to show some college spirit, make sure you plan on using one of your regular Wearhouse shopping visits during the month of April. ACTIVITY OF THE MONTH: ACROBATICS Treehouse’s Little Wishes program can help pay for the cost of an extracurricular activity for youth enrolled with Treehouse Acrobatic classes offer a fun and challenging environment for children and teens of all ages to form new skills in strength training, flexibility, balance, and confidence. Acrobatics can also help high-energy kids learn to focus, concentrate, and remember routines. There are many variations for acrobatic activity, like circus (trapeze and aerial silk), gymnastics (tumbling) and acro dance (choreography-based). Acrobatics is great for all ages and levels of physical fitness, and trained instructors specialize in making sure movements are safe for all participants. There are a number of acrobatic classes for youth in King County, including: School of Acrobatics & New Circus Arts (SANCA) in Georgetown: sancaseattle.org Emerald City Trapeze in SODO: emeraldcitytrapeze.com Summit Gymnastics and Cascade Youth Circus in Maple Valley gymnastics-circus.com You can also check with your local community center for acrobatic classes offered in your area. FORMALWEAR RESOURCES Is your teen in need of low-cost formalwear for the next special occasion in their life? Check out these great resources in our community: The Ruby Room, a Seattle non-profit, offers a huge selection of formal dresses for low income youth in their boutique. They’ll even provide youth with a personal shopper to make sure that they have the perfect outfit! Not only does their boutique feature dresses, but they also have a variety of shoes, accessories and jewelry to choose from. The Cinderella Project (Kent School District only) brings formal dresses and tuxes to high schools in the Kent School District for students to try on and borrow for Prom at no charge.
