Did you Know? - Growing Tree Toys

Sleepover Fun
Having a sleepover? Ask your friends
to sign your tie-dyed pillowcase using
the permanent fabric marker included in
your kit. Be sure to remove your pillow
and then put a paper bag or piece of
cardboard inside to keep the ink from
bleeding through. What a cool
keepsake! Take it to camp or make a
personalized pillow for a favorite
friend.
Extra projects
When you are finished with your pillowcase and tiny t-shirt, you will probably
have some extra tie-dye cords left over. Use the techniques listed above and dye
your own t-shirt, bandanna, boxer shorts, shoelaces or a pair of soccer socks.
For best results, choose white fabric items that are close to 100% cotton. If it’s a
cotton blend, the colors will be lighter. Pre-wash the item before dyeing. This
will help remove any starch or fabric treatments.

Did you Know?
The art of tie-dyeing dates
back to ancient times. Tiedyed artifacts have been discovered all over the world, including, China, India,
Africa, Egypt, Japan and Mexico. Early dyes were made from flowers, leaves,
roots, soil and berries.
You will need a pair of scissors to cut the tie-dye cords, and a few tablespoons
of salt to help set the dye. To keep your hands clean, wear your craft gloves
when handling the tie-dye cords.
Important Information:
Although the cords are non-toxic and safe for children, it’s a good idea to
keep the cords away from your eyes, nose and mouth. The tie-dye cords
can stain fabric and furniture. Cover your work area and wear old clothes.
Clean up any spills or drips right away using cold water and mild soap.
Please Note: You will be using hot tap water to complete this activity.
Water temperatures can vary, for safety reasons, adult supervision and
assistance is recommended.

To create tie-dye patterns, the fabric is folded and secured with rubber bands.
The tie-dye cords are added and then the fabric is soaked in hot tap water to

release the color. White areas are created by the rubber bands. The lighter areas
are created by the folds in the fabric. There are many different patterns and
techniques you can try. Choose from the designs listed below, or make your own
unique tie-dye patterns.
Starburst
• Lay the pillowcase on your
work surface. Smooth out the
fabric to remove any wrinkles.
Grab the center, making sure
you have both the top and
bottom layers. Wrap a rubber
band tightly around the center, holding the fabric together.
• Place another rubber band an
inch or two away from the first.
Keep adding rubber bands until you
reach the bottom of the gathered fabric.
Keep in mind that wherever you place a rubber
band, a white area will remain. If you use four rubber
bands, you will have four white circles in your starburst.
• Select a tie-dye cord. Tuck the cord under a loop of the first
rubber band. Wind the cord down around the fabric in a spiral as
shown. When you get to the end of the cord tuck it under a loop of the nearest rubber band or tie it in a knot.
• Add additional cords as desired following the step above.
Colors, Lines and Patterns:
This is a fun random pattern you can try using up any leftover pieces of tie-dye cord.
• Lay the pillowcase on your work surface. Smooth out the fabric to remove any
wrinkles.
• Cut the tie-dye cords into various sizes and lay them on the fabric. You can lay
them straight or create a design.
• To create a confetti look, cut the tie-dye cords into small pieces. Dampen the
pillowcase with water and then sprinkle the bits of cord onto the fabric.
• Starting at one end, tightly roll the fabric, keeping the tie-dye pieces tucked
inside.
• Fold the roll in half and add a few rubber bands to hold it together.
• Wrap a tie-dye cord around the outside of the roll, tucking the ends into a loop
of the rubber bands. This will create an overall color wash on the fabric.
Mini T-Shirt
You can use any of the techniques listed above to create a tiny t-shirt for your
favorite plush pal. Keep in mind that the t-shirt is small, so some patterns may
be more difficult to do than others. If you want a super-easy project, use little
pieces of cord and make up your own random pattern.
It’s Time to Tie-Dye
Caution!
Tap water can get very hot. Find an adult to help you
with these next steps.
Stripes
• Lay the pillowcase on your work
surface. Smooth out the fabric to
remove any wrinkles
• Starting from the side (short end) of
the pillowcase, fold the fabric like a
fan - this is called an accordion fold.
Each fold should be about 1 inch wide.
• Place rubber bands around the folded fabric spaced a few inches
apart. The number of rubber bands you use will determine how much white
space, and how many stripes you will have.
• Select 2 different colors of tie-dye cords.
Cut the cords in half and then wrap them
between each rubber band alternating
colors as you go. Secure the ends of the
cords by tucking them under a loop of the
rubber band.
• Fill your sink, large pot, bowl or a clean
plastic bucket with very hot tap water. The hotter the water, the stronger the color. You will
need enough water to cover your pillowcase.
• Add two tablespoons of table salt to the water. The salt helps set the dye and
makes the colors brighter.
• Soak the pillowcase in the hot water for 15-20 minutes.
• Remove the pillowcase and then rinse it in cold water. Remove the cords and
rubber bands, and rinse again if needed. Lay your project out flat to dry. If your
project becomes stiff, wash it in cool water using mild soap and then tumble dry.
Note -Always wash dyed items separately in cold water using mild detergent and
then tumble dry.
