John and Margaret Gootee who immigrated to Maryland from France. Sometime
before 1691, Joseph married his first wife, Elizabeth Insley (d.after 1711), who was the
second of two daughters of Andrew Insley (d.1699) and Margaret Jones (d. before 1698)
of Dorcester Co. MD (Elizabeth’s sister was named Margaret). Together the couple had
3 children: Jacob, Ruth (d.ca.1762), and Andrew (ca.1698-1774). After the death of his
first wife, Elizabeth, around 1698-1712, Joseph married Ann Harper, with whom he
had four more children. Joseph died in 1716 in Dorchester Co., Maryland.
Joseph Gouty was naturalized May 22, 1695, with his 2 sons, Joseph and John.

1719 - Joseph Goutee and wife Elizabeth, Dorset Co, Md, sold 100 acres inherited from
Alexander Johnson to John Massey. (A169). Note: The bequest by Johnson to his
daughter Elizabeth had been entailed and they had no right to sell the land. They had a
daughter Mary, who married Levin Taylor and she proved title to the land in 1756 and
Thomas Marsey (Massey) deeded his claim to the Taylors. In 1785, Mary Taylor, widow,
and son Jesse and his wife, Rachel, sold 37 acres to William Massey. the next year Mary
deeded the balance to Jesse and he and his wife Rachel, sold to Jabez Pitt.( Vol. 2, Va.ES

Gootees Grandsons, Joseph Wheland and George S Gootee, accompanied by Josephs
family, decided to go to Kentucky and and settled near Springfield, Washington Co, Ky

Pritchett), circa 1721. No documentation has been found to determine the exact last
name. Jacob was a Revolutionary War Veteran.
(The third child of John and Margaret Gootee was Judith Gootee who was born in
Maryland circa 1673. Judith married John Cole in 1691 and at that time they were given
fifty acres of land called, "Graveling", by her parents.)

in France and died in Maryland in 1699. John is believed (but not proven) to be the John
Goute(sic) that arrived in New Kent, Va., at the head of the York River, east of
Richmond, Va. on 5 March 1654, twelve (12) years before his Father. There is no record
of marriage for John. The second son, Joseph, was born in France circa 1661 and died in
1716 in Maryland. Joseph was married two times. His first wife was Elizabeth Insley,
daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth Insley. This union produced eight (8) known

10. Jacob Gootee --The father of John Gootee, Jacob was born ca.1691-6, the sixth of eight
children of Joseph Gootee and Elizabeth Insley. In 1721, he married Margery
(Woodland?). Jacob was a Revolutionary War veteran and the father of five children:
John, Shadrack (d.1780)--married Elizabeth Brohawn (sister of Jemima), Capewell
(d.before 1793), Jabez, and Mary. Jacob died in 1779.
11. Joseph Gootee --The father of Jacob Gootee, Joseph was born in France in 1661. He
was the second of three children of John and Margaret Gootee who immigrated to
Maryland from France. Sometime before 1691, Joseph married his first wife, Elizabeth

Records at Hall of Records in Maryland, L213, f307, 1662, reads: "Then came Antonie
LeCompte and enters a right vist (namely) for his wife Easter, John Gooteer, Andrew
Guidrey, and Ambrose for which he demands a warrant having sworn as usually on a
warrant and to the Surveyor Generall to layout for this LeCompte, 200 acres of land.
Dated the 21st of February 1662. Return Last August last."
So, evidently my ancestor John Gootee (Gautier) was in Maryland in February 1662.
According to another document at the Archives of Maryland, LWH&L pg 48,19 April
1671, John Gottee and wife Margaret and Stephen Besson, born in Kingdom of
France, were naturalized.
Can anyone help me find the area of France my ancestors were from ? I have searched
records and paid for info from France but have never been able to pinpoint where in
France thay were from.
Obviously John Gootee met LeCompte in England as that is where the ship departed
from.
Any help with this problem will be most welcomed. Any leads appreciated.

On March 10, 1672, a 50 acre tract called "Apes Hill" was surveyed for Richard meekins.
That tract is known today as Bishop's Head Point. Five years after he aquired it,
Meekins transferred the tract to Timothy MacNamara. Descendants of Timothy
MacNamara became owners of numerous tracts of land in South Dorchester and
intermarried into such old-line families of the area as the Pritchetts, Stewarts, lakes,
Hoopers, Traverses and others. On April 1, 1679, Timothy macNamara sold "Apes Hill"
to Dr. John Pritchett who had came from Talbt Co. where he had married Margery,
daughter of Joh and Margery Price of that county. As shown in hs will Dr. Pritchett
was the father of Zebulon, Edward, John, Phunback, Lott, Phillis, Margery, Mary who
married Henry Fisher, and Jane who married Robert Lake. John Pritchett, on June 8,
1710, sold to Henry Lake, blacksmith, a 110 acre tract of land called "Long Acre" which
was on Charles Creek. Robert Lake, blacksmith, the son of Henry lake, married Jane
Pritchett. Henry Lake, through his son, Robert, was the progenitor of the Lake family of
lower Dorchester CO.
