Cop dragged by car
By Lynn Rothenberg
GUILDERLAND — Guilderland Police investigating a
shoplifting incident at Macy's in
Crossgates Mall last Thursday
ended up in a car chase that concluded with the suspects' crashing in Troy. A three-month old
baby was in the car with three
adults, according to Police Chief
James Murley.
Police say they approached a
car in the mall parking lot to further investigate a petit larceny.
While Officer John Cordi was
speaking, the driver put the car
in reverse and began to drive
away, Murley said. The officer
was caught by the car and his
pleas for the driver to stop the
car went unheeded, police say; he
was dragged for about 10 feet
before freeing himself. Guilderland police then followed the
suspect's car, heading to the
Northway.
The chase ended in a minor
one-car crash near Hudson Valley Community College, the arrest report says. Menands Police
assisted in the pursuit and Troy
Police helped at the crash scene,
the arrest report says. Two of
the suspects were transported to
Samaritan Hosptial for minor
injuries; police were not injured.
Arrested were:
— Miia Mauzon, of 276 Ninth
St, Troy, who was charged with
reckless driving; criminal possession of stolen property, fourth
degree; and endangering the
welfare of a child;
— Miranda Austin, 21, of 268
Ninth St., Troy, who was
charged with petit larceny and
endangering the welfare of a
child; and
— Monique McCleary, 25, of
2942 Sixth Ave., Troy, who was
charged with petit larceny.
Car-pursuit policy
Last week's chase was almost
called off twice. The Guilderland
Police Department identifies vehicle pursuit as one of the most
dangerous duties. The police
manual states: "The seriousness
of the offense must be weighed
against the hazards of the health
and welfare of citizens who
might be affected by the chase."
The pursuit mustr be ended when
concerns about the safety of either police or citizens outweigh
the danger to the community if
the offender is not caught, it says.
The guidelines identify when a
pursuit must be terminated:
— If there is danger to the officer or others by the pursuit
which outweighs the necessity
for immediate apprehension;
— If the suspect's identity is established so he can be arrested
later,
— If traffic, roads, and environmental conditions make the
continuation of the pursuit futile;
— If the car's location is no
longer known; or
— If the pursuing officer
knows the suspect is a juvenile,
and the offense is a misdemeanor
or non-serious felony, and the
difficult safety factors involved
in a chase are greater than those
with which a juvenile can cope.
