Riding with Rosa Parks on the CENTRO Bus
By Darlene Lattimore, Owasco Elementary School
The fourth annual “Riding with Rosa” celebration
commenced at Owasco Elementary School on
February 4, 2014. Mayor Michael Quill, School
Board President Karol Soules and Principal Cindy
Walter, along with Mrs. Locastro’s, Mrs. Testa’s,
Mrs. Bryan’s and Ms. Bouley’s kindergarten
classes rode the CENTRO bus to honor Rosa
Parks’s memory.
As the young students rode the CENTRO bus, they
imagined Rosa Parks seated on a Montgomery
Alabama bus, when she bravely refused to give up
her seat in protest of racial segregation. They
observed a portrait of Mrs. Parks placed in the
window at the front of the bus to commemorate
Rosa Parks Day. This event made a memorable
impact on the student’s understanding of Rosa
Parks and the important role she played in
abolishing Segregation Laws.
The kindergarteners kicked off Black History Month
by singing Happy Birthday to Rosa Parks. The
Owasco Parent Organization served a 1955 period
recipe coffee cake, to the invited guests, and
CENTRO provided a visual to our eager
kindergarteners thirsting for knowledge. This is an
event sure to stimulate young minds! Thanks
CENTRO, and all who made it possible.

First Grade Family Fun at Casey Park
by Colleen Miles
First grade students at Casey Park Elementary have had a lot of fun with monthly
family participation activities! First Grade Fall Night in October was a wonderful
opportunity for the children to bring their parents to school for language arts, reading
and math activities. In November, the children learned about family members who were
veterans and made stars with their families to honor them. The stars were hung in the
hallway to build a Veteran's Wall of Fame! With the help of their families, the children
also made thankful feathers to create a Thankfulness Turkey! December's project was a
book report that highlighted a favorite story or story character. The students, together
with their families, made ornaments that illustrated their book report idea!
January was a “Dress the Snowman” activity where the children decorated a snowman
to look like their favorite story character. Then, the children wrote a story about their
snowman. In February, the children read My Heart is Like a Zoo and created their
favorite animal from various sized hearts. The children wrote a story about their animal.

Herman Avenue Students Support the SPCA
By Laura Pesarchick - Grade 4 Teacher and Jessica Rice - Art Teacher
Mrs. Pesarchick’s Fourth Grade
Class at Herman Avenue Elementary
School is proud to display our
collaborative community-based learning
project. Students began their project
by following The Big 6 Research Model
presented in library class. They chose
a pet to research, such as a dog or a
cat, and then created a tri-fold
brochure to share their information.
In Art class, they designed a page to
be submitted for an SPCA coloring
book.
In the classroom, students wrote
an informative essay, with a catchy
hook in the first paragraph, leading
into the development of their topic
with details and using transition words
between paragraphs. They concluded
the essay with a summary of the
topic.
The students enjoyed the 6-week
project. They were excited about the
end result and excited to share their
work.

Fifth grade students at Genesee Elementary School celebrated the
completion of their ELA module that focused on the book “Esperanza Rising,”
by Pam Munoz Ryan. This award-winning book is about a young girl and her
family who live in luxury in Mexico, but whose lives change suddenly after a
family tragedy. They emigrate to California and live in a Mexican labor camp
during the great depression. Every chapter in this book is named after a fruit
or vegetable, which the students were able to try (guacamole, beans, rice, etc.)
at their celebration. Students learned how foods were used as metaphors in
the book. They also dressed in authentic Mexican costumes, and took on the
roles of the characters in the book.
