Blue whales are the biggest animals that have ever existed. They are bigger then
any dinosaur from the prehistoric times. A blue whale is usually about 80 feet long.
That is as long as three school buses. The heart of a blue whale is as big as a small car.
Whales are not fish. They spend their whole life in water, but they are mammals.
Baby blue whales are fed milk by their mothers. They grow quickly. Their weight
increases up to 10 pounds per hour! Adult blue whales ate lots of tiny sea animals
called krill. They can eat up too four tons of krill each day.
Blue whales are also the loudest animals on Earth. They send out very low
sounds. They could be heard in the water hundreds of miles away.
Every ocean of the world has blue whales in it at some time of the year. They
move from one ocean to another as summer changes to winter and back again. The
biggest group has 2,800 blue whales in it. They come to feed in the ocean along the
California coast.
They are also protected animals. Some years ago, they were hunted by whalers.
The number of blue whales became very low. Hunting was banned so that they could
survive.
