Dear Member,
We had a beautiful summer of Tennis! Lots of news to share from the previous and upcoming
season.
MTC’s Jason Kane represents
New Zealand
ITF World Seniors Teams Event - Men’s 40’s Turkey - 18th - 23rd March 2013
Last match of pool play was against Moldova
which was the weakest team in our group. They
cleaned them up 3/0 to finish second in our
pool progressing into the 6th to 10th positional
playoffs.
Venue for the 34th World Teams Event was
Antalya, Turkey on the Mediterranean Sea
played at the Ali Bey Club resort complex. Ali
Bey happens to be the biggest tennis centre in
Europe with 60 red clay courts.
New Zealand had a total of four teams
contesting the world championships in the
men’s 40’s, 50’s, 55’s and women’s 50’s
divisions. ITF senior’s tennis starts from the 35year age bracket and goes up incrementally in
five-year age brackets till 80-years.
The New Zealand 40’s team consisted of Mark
Hadley (Waikato/London), Matthew
Sunderland (Christchurch) and Jason Kane
(Maungaraki). This age group saw nineteen
nations playing for the championship. In their
four-team pool they had 4th seed Spain, 9th
seed South Africa and unseeded Moldova.
First up was Spain. The format for the ties was
two singles matches and one doubles match.
Their team line up for the matches were Mark
and Matthew in the singles matches and Jason
and Mark in the doubles. They received two
clay court lessons in the singles matches. The
Spanish were pretty grooved from the baseline
not missing anything in classic clay court tennis.
The doubles was a little different. They (NZ)
managed to get home 6/4 in the third in a tight
match to register their first point of the event.
Second day they had 9th seeds South Africa.
Matt went down in the number two singles first
in straight sets to a handy player. Mark next up
in a must win match to keep the tie alive
played the match of the teams event winning
in straights sets in a high quality game. Down to
the doubles for the tie and an upset win when
Jason and Mark managed to pull it off winning
in two tight sets 6/4 -7/5.
New Zealand’s draw for the playoffs was the
worst possible draw to have. They were drawn
to play a knockout tie to qualify for the pool of
four teams against 7th seeds Australia. Giving it
all Matt went down in the first singles. Then it
was up to Mark to keep them in the tie.
Unfortunately he went down in two close
fought sets. For the doubles the Australians
rotated their squad giving NZ a comfortable
win. The loss to Australia meant we finished 10th
in the competition, which was the best result
out of the New Zealand teams. The overall
winners of the World 40’s were the Netherlands
who beat France 2/1 in the final.
An overall top ten finish wasn’t too bad for the
unseeded NZ team. They managed to finish
above two of the big tennis powerhouse
nations Argentina and 2nd seeds USA who
bombed out big time on clay. Next year the
event is in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Thanks Hugh!
Hugh, who was the president of MTC from 2011, is “de-immigrating” to his homeland
(England). MTC Committee and members thanked him for his contribution to the club by
organising a progressive dinner as a send off. Prior to being president, Hugh helped the club
take on various responsibilities including further development of our website
(http://www.mtc.co.nz/ ), producing annual reports, etc. He was tireless in managing overall
day to day affairs of the club.
Hugh was also an active member in the wider Maungaraki community as some of you would
already know (e.g. as an editor of Maungaraki Views). He will continue to help the club with
website maintenance.

Olly Sadler wins Wellington Open
Our club number one Olly Sadler capped off a remarkable interclub season by winning the
Wellington Open senior event in March. Olly aged 17 won both the singles and doubles titles.
This is the first time in thirteen years any player from MTC had won a title at this event. Olly is
currently in Australia where he is playing the ITF Victorian junior clay court international. At the
time of printing this newsletter he has won his first two rounds in the singles draw and is in the
quarter finals. After this event Olly is off to Europe for three months to play some more ITF
events. We wish him all the best.

Senior Club Championships
The finals day for the senior club championships held on the 14th of April saw some fantastic
tennis matches being played at MTC. A good crowd was on hand to see the finals on the A,
B and Masters grades. Ray Heenan on the BBQ kept the players and spectators alike well fed
all day and there was some very delicious baking to indulge in as well.
The A grade finals produced our youngest ever senior club champions, Alex Calder (14) in
the Men’s and Ruby Lawler (13) in the Women’s. A bit of club history was made.
Well done to all the winners in all the grades
Prize giving will be sometimes in June. Any questions please contact Audrey Daly
