Oct. 24th –28th 5th Grade News Snowy Range Academy * 4037 E Grand Ave * 745-9930 [email protected] & [email protected] From the Teachers’ Desks We enjoyed meeting with you all at parentteacher conferences! We had some great discussions and learned a lot about all of your kids. Thank you so much for being so open and honest with us about what your children need. It is a lot easier to do our jobs with supportive parents. We are quickly approaching the end of the first quarter. Note that the first quarter ends October 28th, and report cards will go home November 4th. When your child is absent, it is their responsibility to grab a make-up homework sheet from the classroom folder, ask their teachers what they missed, and write it down on the sheet. This is to help prepare the 5th graders for middle school; in middle school, students go from class to class and ask teachers what they missed. We’re getting to that time of year when the weather can be pretty unpredictable. Please remind your child to bring a coat to school, and hat and gloves if applicable. If you have questions about anything, please do not hesitate to e-mail or call us! Please assist your child in breaking it into pieces to work on memorization since it is a longer piece. Also, if you have the opportunity, please discuss the meaning of this poem with your student. We had fantastic discussion about this poem in class, Students will be brining home a list of this week’s spelling words. If you are studying these words at home, please have your student practice breaking down the individual sounds in the words, rather than saying the letter names. This is how we practice them here in class. This week we will be covering chapters 10 – 15 of The Secret Garden. Book groups will be meeting on Tuesday and Thursday for discussion and reading together. In writing this week, students will be learning about alliterations and how they can enhance our writing. Students will also be working on corrections with sentence fragments and run-ons. All students have the opportunity to correct their final copies of their personal narratives as well. All final personal narratives are due on Friday, October 28th. We will also begin composing 3rd person informative summaries. Math This week, students will learn about multiplying fractions, using a common factor to simplify fractions, and calculating the least common multiple. We will also discuss reciprocals and calculating the area of rectangles. The Section Three test is scheduled for November 4th.
