Good-Bye from Deacon Gabe
It is hard to believe that the summer is coming to a screeching halt!
It does not seem possible that I have already been ordained for 10
weeks and that my summer assignment here at OLG is coming to an
end. It has been an awesome summer, and I would like to take a bit
of time to reflect on it with you.
After talking with some of my classmates from the
seminary, I am pretty confident that I have been able to experience
everything a deacon could ever imagine. At the beginning of the
summer, I was able to go door-to-door to sell Fiesta tickets and
evangelize. I also enjoyed my time with the youth group at the lake
from learning to drive and trailer a boat, learning to ski, and
becoming Fr. Blick’s favorite “marine mechanic.” I drove the bus to
and from Camp 5 Mile where we took 15 girls and 13 boys to enjoy
a week of summer camp. I went with 32 kids and 4 adult
chaperones to the Steubenville Youth conference in Springfield, Mo. It was awesome to witness
so many of our youth grow closer to Christ, and come back on fire for their faith. I also had the
ability to do private instruction with a couple of people seeking to join the church. Of course
there was a couple of golf challenges between Fr. Blick and I; I made Fr. Blick feel good by
allowing him to win the challenges. Needless to say, this summer has been full of many exciting
adventures!
As I continue to reflect on my summer, I recall being stretched out of my comfort zone
several times, and I am thankful to God that he allowed me to be stretched. I never thought I
could have the courage to ask someone why they haven’t been coming to Mass, or have the
ability to step inside a complete stranger’s house and just ask them how they are doing. This
summer has helped me grow tremendously, and I know it will make me a better person, and in
one year’s time a better priest!
I am very thankful for having been able to serve this summer at OLG. I have met so
many tremendous people! All of you will always hold a special place in my heart.
He conocido a muchas
personas tremendas! Todos ustedes siempre habrá un lugar especial en mi corazón
Totus Tuus at Dairy Queen
Evening kids from Totus Tuus at Dairy Queen. We had 52 kids at night and we had 100 during the day.It was a great turnout!
Totus Tuus is a success
About 150 students participated in this year’s Totus Tuus program at Our Lady of Guadalupe
Church recently. There were 100 students in the grade school program during the day and 50 students in the
junior/senior high school program in the evening.
Totus Tuus teachers were Sarah Hoffman, Emma Jirak, Logan McCully, Chris Rumback, Luke Sanders,
Samuel Speros, Laura Weixlman and Kylie Werth. In addition, there were 18 junior/senior high school students
helping out, plus some adult volunteers.
Lisa Crites, who helped coordinate the program with Debbie Castaneda, said the volunteers were there
all week and they really appreciated their help. Thanks also to those who brought meals and extra food.
Junior/senior high school students enjoyed their final session on Thursday night with the jello slide. The
South Hutchinson Fired Department capped off Friday’s ending by coming out to get everyone very wet.
PSR Preparing for 2015 - 2016
PSR Enrollment for Sunday and Wednesday will be at Madonna Hall on:
August 15th – after 5:00 pm Mass
August 16th – after 8:00 am Mass, 10:00 am Mass, and 12:00 pm Mass
August 22nd – after 5:00 pm Mass

PSR Classes begin:
September 23rd – First Wednesday PSR Class
September 27th – First Sunday PSR Class
Enrolling on the enrollment date rather than the first class helps us to anticipate the number of children
to expect for the year and provide them with enough supplies. If child/ren is not enrolled on one of these dates,
the family will miss out on the early enrollment fee of $25 per student / $40 per family. After early enrollment,
regular fees will be $35 per student / $50 per family. Also, payment plans are available.
At this time we are in need of Catechists for:
Wednesday – 3rd/4th Grade
- 5th/6th Grade
Sunday
- 1st Grade
- 5th/6th Grade
To be a Catechist, the main qualification needed is a love of the faith and a willingness to share it.
Through prayer, preparation, the Teachers Manual (provided) and the required VIRTUS Training, anyone can be
a competent Catechist.
May the Lord guide and bless our upcoming PSR year.
Holy Name Society planning for fair, dinners
With the summer sports season soon to end, the Holy Name Society
will be turning its attention to help with the annual Kansas State Fair and
to plan at least two holiday dinners in December.
The adult Monday night softball league was scheduled to end the
first week of August. The Wednesday night T-Ball and Coach Pitch league
has concluded. During these games, the concession stand, the Dinky
Diner, was open serving hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, French
fries, tater tots, drinks and candy. In addition to the two nights of league
ball, the Sports Complex hosted two long-time tournaments, a fast pitch
tournament the last weekend of June and the annual Knights of Columbus
slow-pitch tournament the second weekend of July.
Holy Name society members are encouraged to help out with the
State Fair project. There are ample opportunities to do so. Those who like
to cook can help the Altar Society ladies in food preparation or they can
sign up to help out at the OLG stand in the food court or at the trailer. The
10 day Fair can use many, many servers, dishwashers and cooks. When
approached to help out, please say yes.
If one can’t help at the Fair, maybe help can be given on December
5 or 6. Holy Name Society will be serving two dinners this weekend.
As time draws nearer for the dinners, more information will be made
available.
The Holy Name Society did not meet in July because of the 4th of
July weekend. The group was scheduled to meet Sunday, August 2, after
the 8 a.m. Mass. There may not be a September meeting because of the
Labor Day weekend and the fair starting the next weekend. Please check
the church bulletin for meeting information.
OLG hosts Living in Love retreat by Debbie Vieyra
Our Lady of Guadalupe Church was the host parish for a mini retreat
workshop for married couples on July 18 and 19.
There were 10 couples from surrounding parishes who took part in
the Living in Love workshop given by Jack and Sarah McEnaney along
with Ron and Kathy Feher from Pennsylvania.
The day and a half parish-based event provided the inspiration and
insight that taught each couple how to create the lifestyle and marriage
they have always dreamed of and helped them get in touch with the
resources that drew them to each other and fueled their passion for their
marriage.
The participants received a blessing by Father Blick at the 10 a.m.
mass.

Vacation Bible School ends
By Kim Griffith
St. Patrick and the Holy Trinity has sailed away from the Hutchinson
Catholic Community. Thirty-seven children enjoyed four days of vacation
bible school at Our Lady of Guadalupe parish.
They learned about St. Patrick, the parable of the good Samaritan, the
Baptism of Jesus, the Last Supper, the Holy Trinity and Jesus appearing to
the disciples. Children enjoyed prayer time and many creative snacks and
crafts.
We would like to thank the parents for allowing us to help them in the
faith formation of their child(ren).
A special thank you to our helpers: Deacon Gabe Greer, Nancy
Bethers, Peggy Ford, Blake Griffith, Athan Huelskamp, Matthew Labenz,

It is with great excitement that the Fiesta committee reports a net profit at our Fiesta of
$51,902.11. This amount equals our largest profit which was in 2013. A big thank you goes out
to the Fiesta Committee and countless parishioners who contributed their stewardship of sweat and tears
to our efforts. Thank you and God bless you!!!!
Altar Society preps for State Fair
With the opening of the Kansas State Fair quickly approaching, time
is running short for Our Lady of Guadalupe Altar Society members to
make tacos, enchiladas and tamales for the Fair.
Raphaela Garcia, Altar Society president, indicated the ladies were
hoping to finish the tacos by the middle of August or sooner. By July
22, the Altar Society had completed almost half of the 7,000 tacos it had
planned to make for the Fair. After the tacos are finished, the enchiladas
will be made next. The Altar Society expects to make 5,000 enchiladas.
Tamales will be made last. A group will start to make beans soon and
others will start to prepare tostada shells and to make chili sauce.
Those wishing to help prepare food for the Fair should check the
church bulletin weekly for food-making times and dates or check the notes
on the South entrance door of the Recreation Hall.
Food preparation is running behind than previous years, but Garcia
has been encouraged by the recent turnout of ladies. Everyone, including
the men, is encouraged to help out an hour, two hours or maybe three
hours.
Garcia is still waiting for one of the ladies to step up and run for
president for 2016. She is stepping down after this year and she is
concerned what will happen to the Altar Society if no one chooses to step
up.
The Altar Society met this past Tuesday (July 28), but the deadline
for news articles was last week. The August Altar Society meeting is set
for the 20th at 7 p.m. In September, the group will meet the first Tuesday
after the Fair is over, September 22, also at 7 p.m.

Planned Parenthood
By Maxine
Planned Parenthood’s selling of baby parts is not new.
Recently the fact they are still in the business of selling baby
specimens and referring to baby parts on a “menu” has been
exposed again.
There are federal laws against partial birth abortion and
the selling of baby body parts. This video currently is seen
at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uozMnU.
Dr. Mary Gatter suggested estimated charges for
specimens are between $30 and $100 in the video. She is
very callous in her explanation of retrieving body parts, the
importance of being careful with some parts and destroying
other parts which are not valuable.
Many of these specimens are obtained through PP
affiliates who report to the national PP office. Patients are
not compensated for any of the body parts or tissue. Please
view the video to become more informed about how little
thought or compassion is used in the abortion industry.
The video runs into another video with the PP president
who boldly denies making money on “tissue” and claims
they are a ”not for profit company”. Stem cell research
is supported by pro-lifers; embryonic stem cells which kill
embryos are not supported. What kind of a country have
we become? May God forgive us! May God open our eyes to
ways we can help end this horrendous industry.
Please contact your representative and senators on all
levels of government to request an end to taxpayers paying
for abortions. Letters to the editor, talk shows, etc. are also
good ways to inform others. We need to speak up for the
unborn.

Serra Club of Reno County will host a watermelon feed on Sunday, August 9, from 3 p.m. to
5 p.m. to wish Deacon Gabe Greer and the four seminarians: Andrew La benz, Andrew Beugelsdijk,
Christopher Rumback and David Sotelo a good school year.
Please come out and support them. Also, on Wednesday, August 12, Serra Club will be hosting an
appreciation night for altar servers. Details will be available later.
Chapel of the Divine Mercy

A French author, who was an atheist, wrote Catholics are
hypocrites. Because if you Catholics really believed, what you say you
really believe (that the Eucharist was Christ Himself) then you would
crawl on your hands and knees to receive our Lord Jesus Christ.
(A quote from the CD on the Seven Secrets of the Eucharist)
It’s sad to think that some Catholics do not believe that Jesus
Christ is truly present in the Holy Eucharist. How blessed are we to
actually be able to spend time in His presence any time of the day or
night!
If you have not had the pleasure of this special time, please take
time to visit our Divine Mercy Chapel if for only a few minutes. You will
truly be amazed.
At this time we have only one hour open: Friday, 4:00 – 5:00 pm
If you are interested in this time please call Margaret Tafolla 663-8369 or
Teresa Murillo 662-0304.
If you need help finding a substitute please call
(1st) a friend or family member
(2nd) call you Guardian angel
(3rd) call the Archangel, who watches over you hour
If you do not know who your Guardian Angel or Archangel is there is a list in the front of the sign-in
book in the Chapel. Please take one. You might want to call the adorer who has the same hour as you except on
another day and trade hours for that day.
