Ship to Shore Harbor View Elementary School Newsletter May 2012 Sailing for Excellence Greetings Harbor View Families! As we enter the last month of school, I’m finding myself being a bit nostalgic. It’s a bitter sweet time as we close the chapter on this building, that despite its problems, we have loved for 60 years. Many of you share the same history I do with this building whether it’s been through your children or you attending HVES, it’s been a great place for all. The sweet side however, comes from knowing that we’re going to be back here, on the same grounds, in 2 short years, in a brand new building, where we will be able to create new memories that will last a lifetime! In the meantime, I hope everyone has a safe and happy summer. I look forward to seeing you at 891 Mikell Drive in the fall! Lara Latto Principal What a difference! Our old school has served us well over the years but it is time for us to get a new home. As most of you know, we will be temporarily housed in the old Stile’s Point Elementary School on Mikell Dr. On the Horizon Fri 5/4 AR Points cutoff Tues 5/8 PASS Reading Wed 5/9 Thurs 5/10 Fri 5/11 Fri 5/18 Tues 5/22 PASS Math PASS Wed 5/23 Thurs & Fri 5/245/25 Mon 5/28 Tues 5/29 Wed 5/30 Thurs & Fri 5/31 & 6?1 Wed 8/22 Social Studies – 3rd & 5th PASS Social Studies – 4th CD Closing Program AR Party CD testing for 2012/2013 school year 5th Grade field trip Myrtle Beach Field Days Memorial Day no school Kindergarten end-ofthe-year program 5th Grade Dance 6:30 Half day for students Dismissal time 10:40 First Day of School 2012/2013 school year Parent Information Because we will be moving to our new school, there will be no program in place for taking Accelerated Reader tests this summer. Reading information for summer will be coming home in your child’s end-of-the-year report card. We have a 55 gallon aquarium in our recycling shed that can't hold water, but would make a great "terrarium." It belongs to the school, but we don't want to move it. Contact [email protected] if you are interested. Next year’s school times will be 8:30am to 3:30pm. We will begin receiving students inside the school at 8:10am. In addition to this information, the decision has been made to continue transporting students who live within the HVES attendance zone only. This is in large part due expense that would be imposed on the district for this service and the lack of funds available to the district. I would like to encourage families to start making arrangements now for transportation, including having your child ride the bus to/from school or making carpool arrangements. More info about the transition will come home this summer. As a member of the Wellness Team I appreciate all your participation and support with the Fun Run, Jump Rope for Hearts and the SC Walk to School Day in March. We are very excited for Angela McLaughlin, cafeteria manger, and her team winning the CCSD Healthy Lunch Recipe contest, for Baked Salmon. May is Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention month and we would like to include that focus on our Field Day on May 24th and 25th. Our students spend a lot of time outdoors during recess, physical education classes and after school activities. While we like to encourage our children to be physically active, but we must learn to protect themselves from ultraviolet radiation. You can make a difference! One or two blistering sunburns in childhood may double the lifetime risk of developing melanoma. So please on field day have your child wear a hat and sun screen. Some other helpful web sites with information about sun protection are: http://www.sunsafetyforkids.org/dontfryday/ www.epa.gov/sunwise Have a safe and wonderful summer!
