Sailing for Excellence
Greetings Harbor View Families!
As we enter the last month of school, I’m finding
myself being a bit nostalgic. It’s a bitter sweet time as
we close the chapter on this building, that despite its
problems, we have loved for 60 years. Many of you
share the same history I do with this building whether
it’s been through your children or you attending HVES,
it’s been a great place for all. The sweet side however,
comes from knowing that we’re going to be back here,
on the same grounds, in 2 short years, in a brand new
building, where we will be able to create new memories
that will last a lifetime!
In the meantime, I hope everyone has a safe and happy
summer. I look forward to seeing you at 891 Mikell
Drive in the fall!

Principal
What a difference! Our old school has served us well
over the years but it is time for us to get a new
home. As most of you know, we will be temporarily
housed in the old Stile’s Point Elementary School on
Mikell Dr.

Parent Information
Because we will be moving to our new school, there will be no program in place for taking
Accelerated Reader tests this summer. Reading information for summer will be coming
home in your child’s end-of-the-year report card.
We have a 55 gallon aquarium in our recycling shed that can't hold water, but would make
a great "terrarium." It belongs to the school, but we don't want to move it. Contact
[email protected] if you are interested.
Next year’s school times will be 8:30am to 3:30pm. We will begin receiving students
inside the school at 8:10am. In addition to this information, the decision has been
made to continue transporting students who live within the HVES attendance zone only.
This is in large part due expense that would be imposed on the district for this service
and the lack of funds available to the district. I would like to encourage families to start
making arrangements now for transportation, including having your child ride the bus
to/from school or making carpool arrangements. More info about the transition will come
home this summer.
As a member of the Wellness Team I
appreciate all your participation and support
with the Fun Run, Jump Rope for Hearts and
the SC Walk to School Day in March. We are
very excited for Angela McLaughlin, cafeteria
manger, and her team winning the CCSD
Healthy Lunch Recipe contest, for Baked
Salmon. May is Skin Cancer Detection and
Prevention month and we would like to include
that focus on our Field Day on May 24th and
25th. Our students spend a lot of time outdoors
during recess, physical education classes and
after school activities. While we like to
encourage our children to be physically active,
but we must learn to protect themselves from
ultraviolet radiation. You can make a difference!
One or two blistering sunburns in childhood may
double the lifetime risk of developing melanoma.
So please on field day have your child wear a
hat and sun screen. Some other helpful web
sites with information about sun protection are:

Have a safe and wonderful summer!

Students have been celebrating National Poetry Month throughout the month of April.
They have listened to works by various poets and have even tried their hand at creating their own
poems. Recently, third through fifth graders learned how to design a diamante poem. Cole
Westmoreland created an insightful antonym diamante poem contrasting fiction/non-fiction which can
be read below:
Fiction
Untrue, adventurous
Imagining, exploring, creating
Dragons, unicorns…astronomy, biography
Learning, finding, researching
Truthful, real
Non-fiction
Da’Quan Vinson also created an antonym diamante poem comparing inferno/snowstorm:
Inferno
Hot, overheated
Burning, terrifying, frightening
Fire, wood…snow, storms
Freezing, punishing, hauling
Cold, rapid
Snowstorm
Students are looking forward to Screen Free Week from April 30 through May 4 during which time
they will “Sock it to Reading!” by wearing Crazy Socks to library class all week! Shoes ARE required
Mrs. Polk’s Class created a colorful
bulletin board for spring!
Mrs. Killingsworth’s class is learning
all about frogs.

Clara Barton
By Julia Wall
3-2
Clara Barton was born in Massachusetts, in
1821. In 1839 she became a teacher. During
the Civil War, she became a nurse who cared
for soldiers during battles. The soldiers
called her the “Angel of the Battlefield”.
After the war, Clara found 22,000 missing or
dead soldiers. Clara formed the Red Cross in
1881. It still continues today! She helped a
lot of people by bringing supplies to them.
She was the leader of the Red Cross. She
died at the age of 90.

Go Harbor View!
Congrats to all of you who played on a tennis team for HVES this season. You played
some tough matches, we won some, lost some, and learned a lot about the game and
made new friends. We are all so proud of you for being such great players and look
forward to seeing you out on the courts next season. Here's some advice from a pro:
If you want to play tennis, I'll give you a tip: You must practice your stroke, tighten
your grip, straighten your shoulders, and swivel your hip, Don’t forget to develop your
sense of sportsmanship!
