What to Do
Support the learners in dressing up with some Egyptian
jewellery, headbands and costumes (see Further
Suggestions). You can introduce the lesson by playing the
song Walk Like an Egyptian.
See Resource 1: A Journey to Egypt (with accompanying
whiteboard slides) for a sensory story that takes the
learners to the land of the pharaohs and pyramids to
experience the sights, sounds and wonders of Egypt.
Gather the learners together on or around the magic
carpet. As you repeat the first four lines of the story use
the parachute/fan to give the learners the feel of the wind
as they fly through the sky. Encourage the learners where
appropriate to activate the PowerLink switch to start the fan.
For older learners My Granny Went to Market: A Roundthe-world Counting Rhyme (Author: Stella Blackstone,
Illustrator: Christopher Corr) could be used an alternative
to this sensory story. Fly away with Granny as she takes a
magic carpet ride around the world, collecting a steadily
increasing number of souvenirs from each exotic location!
This story takes readers on an adventure to different
countries while focusing on counting along the way.

Egyptian art ideas
The Egyptians liked to wear colourful jewellery costumes
and headbands. There are many sites where you can find
ideas on how to make these and other Egyptian crafts. Visit
www.daniellesplace.com and select the ‘Crafts’ link to find
Egyptian crafts. This site has attractive pictures of jewellery
and headbands and has clear, easy-to-follow instructions.
Making these resources and using them as props in your
sensory story will help to enhance the learners’ experiences
and make their visit to Egypt more fun!
