● Louisiana Purchase the land west of the Mississippi River that was purchased by the
U.S. from France in 1803.

●

“The name is a compound of two common Hidatsa nouns, cagáàga [tsaɡáàɡa] 'bird' and míà
[míà] 'woman'. The compound is written as Cagáàgawia 'Bird Woman' in modern Hidatsa
orthography, and pronounced [tsaɡáàɡawia] (/m/ is pronounced [w] between vowels in Hidatsa).
The double /aa/ in the name indicates a long vowel and the diacritics a falling pitch pattern.
Hidatsa is a pitchaccent language that does not have stress, therefore in the Hidatsa
pronunciation all syllables in [tsaɡáàɡawia] are pronounced with roughly the same
relative emphasis.”

3. Why was the Louisiana Purchase important to Jefferson? ( pgs 346)
One important reason was that Jefferson believed in the idea of the U.S. as a nation of small
farmers you need lots of land for that to happen.
He was also smart enough to realize that this helped push other countries claims/boundaries
further west away from the Mississippi River and would make the U.S. stronger.
4. Why were Lewis and Clark instructed to to document the natural resources they found in their
travels? ( pgs 348349)
Little was known about the territory the information they could provide would help let it be known
if the land could be farmed or if it had other resources that could be used.
5. How did the Louisiana Purchase change the United States? ( pg 346)
