Of these, there were 19,240 females and 19,007 males. The population of Roswell was 48,611. The total number of crashes in 2013 was 1,118, yielding a crash rate of 23 per thousand people (total number of crashes 1,118 divided by total population 48,611 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 19 per thousand people. General Crash Information From 2004 to 2013 the number of crashes has shown no trend. Fatal and injury crashes have shown an upward trend from 2010 to 2012. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has increased since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has decreased. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has decreased since last year. Of the 82 people convicted of DWI in Roswell, 51 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 42 divided by the total number of people convicted 82 times 100). Crash Specifics Crashes involving Other vehicles was the most common class, accounting for 69 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Overturns, Pedestrians and Other vehicles resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 53 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 21 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 73 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The four most common top contributing factors were Driver inattention, Other, Following too close and Failing to yield. There were five fatal crashes in 2013. The top contributing factor for the fatal crashes was Alcohol involvement. People in Crashes Overall, males were 53 percent of drivers in crashes. They account for 50 percent of licensed drivers in Roswell. five pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2013. In 2013, no "Teenagers" or Young Adults were killed in crashes in Roswell. Statewide 10 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Roswell 8 percent (2 of 25) were under 21. Location of arrest/conviction was determined by police agency/court location, not driver residence. Crashes and drivers were counted by the city of occurrence/residence. Population was counted according to the Census definition. The city population data is from the most current 2013 census counts. Young adults are people between the ages of 20 and 24. 'Teenagers' are people between the ages of 15 and 19.
