Anatomy and Physiology Syllabus

Anatomy and Physiology 20162017 Compass Montessori High School What we are doing in this course: In this course we will try to give you a broad scope of all of the body systems and how they work together. We will also be covering different ways of taking care of the body, including nutrition, traditional medicine, and alternative medicine. Comparative anatomy of other animals will be covered depending on individual interest. Course Objectives: At the end of this course you should all be able to: 1) Describe the anatomical and physiological features of the body using appropriate terminology. 2) Describe various body organ systems and how they interact with each other. 3) Relate the structure (anatomy) of different body parts to their function (physiology). 4) Further appreciate the complexity of your own body. 5) Be able to understand your body so that you can make informed health and nutrition decisions throughout your life. Assignments: Generally you will have a reading (textbook or otherwise) for each topic. This reading will be given to you the week before lecture, and should be completed (read and annotated) over the weekend. We will also have one lab or scientific article to analyze per week. Results and conclusions of labs, or writing topics for articles will be written in your lab notebook. In addition to teacher generated labs, you will be expected to create one lab per term. You can choose which topic you would like to create a lab for. At the end of the year there will be a final presentation or project. Tests: You will have one final at the end of the term. In addition, you will often have an exam at the end of each section. These tests are primarily so that you can get a chance to practice more standard forms of testing and should be viewed as a fun opportunity to challenge yourselves. Lab Notebook Expectations: Your lab notebook is your record of the work you will do through the year. They should be neat, and clearly marked with dates and topics. The front of your notebook needs to be labeled with your name. Leave 2 pages before your first entry to keep a table of contents. Write in pen. If you make a mistake, do not try to obliterate it, one neat line through it is sufficient.
