SECTIONALISM
From the beginning of the United States there had always been
differences between states in different parts of the country.
However, during the late 1700s and 1800s these differences
became much greater than they had been before.
In the north small villages were turning into towns and towns into
cities. Many people stopped working on farms and began working
in factories and mills. Politicians in northern states wanted the
government to help their businesses by putting taxes called tariffs
on foreign goods. These tariffs would make foreign goods more
expensive which would encourage people to buy American-made
products. Merchants in the north also wanted the government to
help protect their ships and trade.
In the south the vast majority of people, free and slave, were still
involved in farming. Southern politicians wanted the government to
help protect and spread the institution of slavery which was vital to
the production of tobacco and cotton. They also opposed tariffs
which angered the foreign countries that bought their products and
which made buying goods more expensive.
In the west most people were involved in farming their own land
growing crops like wheat and corn. Most opposed slavery which
they believed would result in the creation of large plantations at the
expensive of small independent farms. Politicians from the west
wanted the government to continue funding internal improvements
such as roads and canals which would help them to sell their
products. They also wanted the government to continue selling
cheap land which would encourage more settlers to move west.
