Bandar Seri Begawan (Muara), Brunei
For two centuries the Sultanate of Brunei was the one of the great dynasties of Southeast Asia, the ruler of all Borneo. The arrival first of
colonizing Europeans and later the depredations of James Brooke, the notorious "White Raja" of Sarawak, reduced Brunei in size and
scope. By the late 19th century the Sultanate had become an English protectorate. The discovery of vast deposits of offshore oil in the
early 20th century revitalized Brunei's fortunes. The Sultanate gained full independence from the United Kingdom in 1984, and today
Brunei is one of the world's smallest and richest countries.
Once the ruler of all Borneo, Brunei today is surrounded by Malaysia's Sarawak Province. The capital is Bandar Seri Begawan, a city of
some 75,000 people. Bandar boasts elegant modern Islamic mosques, museums and palaces. Brunei's other chief attractions are its

Jame'Asr Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah
Completed in 1994 to celebrate the Sultan's 25th Jubilee, this ornate mosque - the
biggest in Brunei - is a superb example of contemporary Islamic architecture with its
elegant gold domes.
Kampong Ayer (Village)
Built on stilts over the water, this series of 28 colorful villages connected by wooden
walkways features brightly painted houses, shops, market, mosques and schools.

Home to Brunei's Crown Regalia, the royal regalia on display here includes the Royal

Istana Nurul Iman
Meaning "Palace of the Light of Faith" this official residence of the Sultan of Brunei is
the largest residential palace in the world at over 2,000,000 square feet.
Brunei Museum
Featuring galleries focusing on Brunei's natural history, culture and archeology, this
national museum also boasts one of the finest collections of Islamic art and illuminated
Qurans in the world.
Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque
