Jackie Robinson Day Essay
Contest
The Minnesota Twins will be celebrating Jackie
Robinson Day on Sunday, April 15, as the Twins take on
the Texas Rangers. In celebration of Jackie Robinson
and his legacy, the Minnesota Twins have distributed the
Jackie Robinson Day Essay Contest to 4th and 5th
graders at four participating schools. The schools
participating this year are Lakes International Language
Academy, Farnsworth Aerospace Elementary, Jenny
Lind Elementary, and Harvest Preparatory School.
Ten essays from each school will be looked over and
graded by the Twins’ Jackie Robinson Day committee,
which includes leaders in the Twin Cities’ multicultural
communities. The schools along with the winners will be
recognized at a ceremony during the community Jackie
Robinson celebration being held on Saturday, April 14th.
The event will be sponsored by the Twins Community
Fund and the Twins RBI program. This event is free for
children ages 5-18 and their families. It is being held at
North High School from 1-5, and will feature a youth
baseball/softball clinic, free food, prizes, and a
presentation of the film Letters from Jackie given by Ron
Rabinovitz. The 1st place winners will be presented in a
pregame ceremony during Jackie Robinson Day at Target
Field on April 15th.
The Minnesota Twins Partner Up With
Windom Spanish Dual Immersion
School
The Minnesota Twins have a new partnership with
Windom Spanish Dual Immersion School. Windom is a
PreK-5th grade school located in South Minneapolis that
offers an enriched education where each student learns to
read, write and speak fluently in both Spanish & English.
Windom students have the opportunity to participate in
after-school programs as well as WERC programs which
are small fee-based programs that include classes in art,
dance, cooking, sports, and many more. Miguel Ramos,
Director of Emerging Markets states, “This partnership
will bring great benefits to both parties. It will also help
people know about the Minnesota Twins and existing
opportunities. I’m impressed by the quality of
organization and education they have. I look forward to
working with them in the near future.”
See page 2 for more information on Windom’s Noche
De Gala event.
Toni Stone (7/17/31-11/2/96) was the
first of three women to play professional
baseball in the Negro League. Toni was
born and raised in St.Paul, MN, where
she began playing baseball with local
boy’s teams. Toni Stone started her
career with the San Francisco Sea Lions.
After not receiving the pay she was
promised, she left to play for the New
Orleans Black Pelicans for a short period
of time, and later with the Indianapolis
Clowns.
Despite all of the many hardships she
faced, she remained successful and was
later inducted into the Women’s Sports
Hall of Fame in 1993 and is honored at
the Baseball Hall of Fame in
Cooperstown.

Spotlight of the
Month
Ben Revere
Born: 5/3/1988 in Atlanta, GA
Bats/Throws: L/R
HT: 5' 9''
WT: 170
Ben Revere began playing baseball
early with tee-ball at the age of 3. As
an older child, Ben went to high
school in Lexington, KY and while he
was there he earned MVP honors and
was named 2006-2007 Gatorade
Kentucky Baseball Player of the
Year.
Ben Revere was the Twins’ firstround pick (28th overall) in the 2007
Major League Baseball Draft. He
continued his climb through the
minor leagues before getting the call
to the Twins just 3 years after being
drafted. On September 7, 2010 Ben
made his official Major League debut
as a pinch hitter for Denard Span.
One of Revere's notable plays was
during the Twins game against the
Royals on July 15, 2011. After hitting
the ball, Revere tripped between
second and third base where he did a
somersault, got back up with his
helmet off, and made it to third base.
