Paying for the pantry
Once you’ve completed a membership form you’ll need to decide
how to pay your weekly pantry fee. There are a number of ways to
pay, so just pick the one that best suits you.
Standing Order
This is where a payment for a product or service is
taken directly from your bank account on a date
that suits you. If you don’t have enough money in
your account the payment will not be taken and
you will not be charged. Ask at the Pantry for a
form.
Cash payment
You can pay cash directly at Stonemill Housing
Office on Mondays, 9.00am - 10.00am and
Wednesdays, 9.00am - 10.30am.
You can pay in advance using either of these methods.
For example you could pay £10 in a lump sum and this would then
cover you for 5 weeks.

Using the pantry
• Members must produce their membership card when visiting
Your Local Pantry.
• Members can visit the store once a week and choose the
following items:
4 in the ‘yellow triangle’ category
3 in the ‘green circle’ category
2 in the ‘blue square’ category
1 in the ‘red star’ category
• Items available may vary each week but will be divided into the
above categories.
• To give all members an equal and fair share of the stock
available, we may limit some items to allow one per customer
(for example, one box of cereal only)
• Members cannot pre-order items, as items stocked are subject
to availability, while stocks last. There is no guaranteed
availability of any item week to week.
Dietary requirements / food allergies
Your Local Pantry receives a lot of its goods from FareShare (a
national charity which redistributes surplus food to charities and
community groups). Some products may arrive from FareShare with
damaged labelling or with no labelling at all.
Where this occurs it is the responsibility of the member to decide
whether to take the product and that they do so at their own risk.
Members are reminded to check the packaging of all products for
dietary requirements.
No bank account? Just ask and we will help sort one out.

Volunteer at the pantry
“The pantry
has really helped
me to settle in to my
local community. I’ve
been able to meet new
people and gain work
experience for future
employment.”
Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, make a difference
in your community and gives you a chance to:
• learn new skills; • earn qualifications;
• attend courses; • receive training; and
• enjoy trips out; • meet new people.
The pantry is always looking for people to assist in the day-to-day

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it a food bank?
No. The pantry is a membership
scheme where for £2.50 each
week members can visit the
pantry and select at least 10
items of their own choosing
from a wide selection of goods.
Where does the food come
from?
The national charity FareShare
is one of our main suppliers.
FareShare collects surplus stock
from supermarkets and then
redistributes it to the pantry and
other community groups. The
pantry receives a wide range
of interesting items each week
from FareShare.
What food does the pantry
stock?
There are weekly deliveries of
fresh fruit and vegetables as
well as milk from a local dairy.
The pantry stocks all your store
cupboard favourites like cereal,
cans, pasta, rice and much,
much more!
The pantry doesn’t stock meat
or fish (apart from in cans) for
food safety reasons.
To make sure the staples you
need are always available
the money collected from
memberships is reinvested
straight back into the pantry
buying additional stock and
essential equipment.

Penny Lane Pantry - Your Guide
Is the stock good quality and in date?
The pantry will never stock food
past its sell by date as this
could be harmful to health and
is against the law
When the date is passed, it
doesn’t mean that the food will
be harmful, but it might begin to
lose its flavour and texture.
The pantry will, from time
to time, stock items that are
passed their ‘best before’ date.
‘Best before’ dates are about
quality, not safety.
Every year in the UK we throw
away 7.2 million tonnes of
food and drink, most of which
could have been eaten. So think
carefully before throwing away
food past its ‘best before’ date.
