The best leaders ask questions. In fact, the best leaders ask GREAT questions. Leaders who ask
questions rather than make statements or demands are the ones who lead great teams. But there’s
one question that leaders ask themselves that is, I think, the key Coaching question leading to great
growth, insight and clarity:
How am I responsible…?
Leaders don’t look to blame others or circumstances or the weather or anything. Leaders recognize
that they bear responsibility.
How am I responsible for this conflict?
How am I responsible for this confusion?
How am I responsible for this situation?
I’m not suggesting that you take blame where there is none. Certainly I’m not suggesting that you
rescue people who bear fault. Here’s another way to think about it:
You deserve what you allow.
I’m in a conflict situation right now. I don’t like it. I’m not completely sure what to do about it. I know I
can’t ignore it. I also know that I am responsible for it - as the leader - because I have allowed the
circumstances to arise which led to it. In a sense, I’ve approved of the behavior that is now causing
the conflict. I own this and I must move into the fog of uncertainty to solve it.
Whether you are a business leader or an athletic coach, the culture and team members take their cue
from you.
What have you allowed that has led to the culture in which this behavior can thrive?
What have you allowed that has led to the culture in your office? On your team?
It’s a simple question. It can be a painful question. It’s definitely a worthwhile question.
