Penn Club and Penn NYC are
teaming up to bring you an All
Star in the fields of sports law and business. Wharton
Professor Kenneth Shropshire, who has consulted
on projects for the NCAA, NFL, MLB, and U.S.
Olympic Committee, is the leader in the niche field of
sports law and entertainment. With so much scandal
— not to mention [L]insanity — going on in the
world of athletics, there will be lots to discuss!
Kenneth L. Shropshire is the David
W. Hauck Professor at the Wharton
School of the University of Pennsylvania and the Director of its Wharton
Sports Business Initiative. Shropshire
spent five of his 25 years at Wharton as
Chairman of the School’s Legal Studies and business ethics department. His research and teaching have centered
on sports law, sports business and the social impact of
sports, as well as negotiation, dispute resolution and diversity in the law. Shropshire acts as an arbitrator in disputes
regarding employment, agents, payments and eligibility
to such clients as the NFL Players Association and USA
Track and Field. Shropshire has provided commentary for
a number of media outlets including Nightline, CNN,
the New York Times, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal,
NPR and Sports Illustrated. Mr. Shropshire received his
law degree from Columbia University Law School.

Last year, our spin-a-thon had at least one rider on a
spin bike going from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. We had
several bikes going simultaneously — and with the silent
auction of Lance Armstrong autographed jerseys — and
raised a total of $6,460. For 2012, our goal is to raise at
least $10,000. Please help us realize this worthwhile goal!
If you wish to spin, please contact the Palestra at
212.403.6623 or e-mail [email protected] to
reserve your time (in 30-minute blocks or more) and to
make your donation of $30. No need to be a Club member to participate. Sponsorship tickets are also available.

Ladies and Lords Ball: An
Edwardian Affair |
Friday, May 4th, 8:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. After a long day
of hunting and
leisure activities,
gather at the clubhouse for an evening of Edwardian
Era amusement.
This is the golden
age of country house entertainment, with the Penn
Club transforming into a lively British manor. At
our young alumni (ages 21-34) ball we’ll celebrate
modern amenities like electricity and the automobile,
engage in intellectual conversations about Art Nouveau, and play parlour games with class. As Lords and
Ladies you will enjoy tantalizing libations, splendid
hors d’oeuvres, and sweet melodies by Penn’s own DJ
Bubbles. In the Belle Époque, women donned lace
and pearls, while gentleman dressed in long blazers,
oxfords, and top hats. Men, don’t forget to curl your
mustaches and bring your walking sticks! Bear in
mind that the sun never set on the British Empire, so
we will be sure to party well into the night.
During the event, Johnnie Walker will also lead an
elegant tasting from a selection of their portfolio
blends, led by one of their esteemed Masters of
Whisky.
$40 per member and $50 per guest plus tax and service
charge. Includes hors d’oeuvres and open bar of Johnnie Walker, house wine, and beer. Bow ties and corsets
are optional (but recommended). Reservations due
Tuesday, May 1st and become final sale on that date.

Our second annual Spin-a-Thon for the purpose of raising
money for the LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center of Excellence at Penn’s Abramson Cancer Center is fast approaching. I will once again be riding a spin bike that day to
raise money and awareness for this worthy cause. The
LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center is affiliated with the Lance
Armstrong Foundation, and is one of a handful of such Centers nationwide. Last year’s Spin-a-Thon raised $6,500.00.
With your help, I know we can exceed that number this year.
Whenever I ride for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the
Manifesto of the LAF is constantly running through my
mind. It reads as folows:
The Manifesto of the Lance Armstrong Foundation
“We believe in life. Your life. We believe in living every
minute of it with every ounce of your being. And that you
must not let cancer take control of it. We believe in energy:
channeled and fierce. We believe in focus: getting smart and
living strong. Unity is strength. Knowledge is power. Attitude is everything. This is the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
We kick in the moment you’re diagnosed. We help you accept
the tears. Acknowledge the rage. We believe in your right to
live without pain. We believe in information. Not pity. And in
straight, open talk about cancer. With husbands, wives and
partners. With kids, friends and neighbors. And the people
you live with, work with, cry and laugh with. This is no time
to pull punches. You’re in the fight of your life.
We’re about the hard stuff. Like finding the nerve to ask for
a second opinion. And a third, or a fourth, if that’s what it

After earning a spot on The Apprentice, Bhakta won the

Representatives. He is also a frequent speaker on MSNBC
and Fox News. WhistlePig is “100/100”, meaning 100 proof, 100 percent
rye whiskey. It is aged for at least ten years in oak barrels to make the perfect
combination of proof, purity and age. Located on one of the oldest farms
in Vermont, WhistlePig has received the “highest ever” designation from
the Wine Enthusiast and the “highest recommendation” from the Spirits

The Sense of an Ending |
by Julian Barnes
Monday, April 16th, 12:00 p.m.
NEW
ATTENDEES
WELCOME!
“Elegant, playful, and remarkable.”
—The New Yorker
This intense new novel follows a middle-aged man as
he contends with a past he has never much thought
about—until his closest childhood friends return with a
vengeance, one of them from the grave, another maddeningly present.
Tony Webster thought he’d left all this behind as he built a life for
himself; and by now his marriage and family and career have fallen into
an amicable divorce and retirement. But he is then presented with a
mysterious legacy that obliges him to reconsider a variety of things he
thought he’d understood all along, and to revise his estimation of his
own nature and place in the world. A novel so compelling that it begs to be read in a single sitting, with
stunning psychological and emotional depth and sophistication, The
Sense of an Ending is a brilliant new chapter in Julian Barnes’ oeuvre.
$49 per member and $59 per guest plus tax and service charge by
Monday, April 9th at noon. Reservations are required one week in advance.
If the reservation minimum of 12 people is not met, the program will be
subject to cancellation. This program includes book discussion and full
buffet luncheon with coffee/tea and dessert.

ECOfit Challenge at
the Palestra Gym
April 2nd – April 27th
April is Earth month, and during
the month of April we encourage Penn Club members and
their families to lead a more “green” lifestyle! “ECOfit” is
a four week incentive program designed to integrate
with Earth Day and increase overall awareness of ecofriendly activities. In teams, program participants will
earn credits for minutes of physical activity completed,
as well as bonus credits for activities that reduce an
individual’s overall environmental impact. Program
participants will learn helpful ways to reduce their carbon footprint while working out, and going through
normal daily activities.
The top two teams will not only be awarded with
prizes but also awarded with the knowledge that they
have positively impacted the environment! But we
can’t leave anyone out of the fun; therefore all participants will be entered into a raffle to win prizes!
