PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – Robert Shintaku
Happy New Year!!! I’m hope everyone had a nice 2007 and even a better 2008.
Fresno JACL has its own website: www.fresnojacl.org. The website was built by Jeffrey Kimoto from Sacramento.
Jeffrey publishes Nikkei West. In case you are not familiar with Nikkei West, it is an English Language newspaper that
focuses on Japanese American news and issues. In addition to news, it also keeps a community calendar. You can get
information about Nikkei West at the website: www.nikkeiwest.com. I would like to thank Jeffrey for taking his time
and expertise to build the website for Fresno JACL.
The website is new and we are in the process of adding information and articles. Please visit the website, periodically to
see what we’ve added. For those who have high school seniors or undergraduates in college, we will be adding
information about our upcoming 2008 scholarships and application, awarded by the Fresno JACL and CCDC
(Central California District Council).
DAY OF REMEMBRANCE
Come celebrate the 20th anniversary of Redress. The Pinedale Assembly Center Memorial Project Committee will host a
Day of Remembrance Dinner at Pardini’s Restaurant, 2257 W. Shaw Avenue, Fresno, on Sunday, February 17, 2008. At
3 p.m, there will be a free showing of American Pastime, a full-length movie about Japanese American baseball during
World War II with commentary by Kerry Nakagawa, Assistant Producer and Executive Director of the Nisei Baseball
Research Project. A reception will be held at 5:30 p.m. Dinner and Program will begin at 6:30 p.m.
The program includes presentation of Distinguished American Awards to former Secretary of Transportation Norman Y.
Mineta for the Spirit of Public Service, Prof. James Hirabayashi for the Spirit of Education and Justice James A. Ardaiz

This is a fund-raising dinner. We currently have a budget of $100,000. We have raised over $60,000 over the last two
years. The Committee is targeting February 2009 for completion of the Memorial.
Cost for the dinner is $50 per person. There will not be a charge for Former internees of Pinedale Assembly Center, but
they are asked to make reservations. Charge for veterans, students and young adults up to 25 years of age will be $25.
Silver sponsor, including one dinner, is $100. Gold Sponsor, including 4 dinners, is $500. Donations are being accepted.
Proceeds from the dinner will be used to support costs of the Pinedale Assembly Center Memorial Project.

NATIONAL JACL SCHOLARSHIPS
The National JACL annually awards about thirty (30) scholarships totaling over $50,000. The information brochure and
applications for the 2008 National JACL Scholarship Program have been posted on the JACL’s website (jacl.org). The
documents are in Word and PDF formats for easy access.
The Freshman applications must be submitted to the applicant’s Chapter by March 1, 2008. Each JACL Chapter is asked
to screen the applications and forward the “outstanding” applications to: JACL Freshman Scholarship Program, 265 E.
Moody Avenue, Fresno, CA 93720. There is no limit to the number of applications a Chapter can forward for
consideration. The forwarded applications must be postmarked by April 1, 2008, to be considered for the awards.
The applications for the other scholarship categories (Undergraduate, Graduate, Law, Creative & Performing Arts, and
Financial Aid) are to be sent by the applicant to: JACL Scholarship Program, 5415 N. Clark Street, Chicago, IL 60640.
The applications for these other categories must be postmarked by April 1, 2008, to be considered for the awards.
It is a requirement of the National JACL Scholarship Program that the applicant be a Student or Individual member of the
JACL. The membership of their parent will NOT fulfill this requirement. Applicants may submit their membership
registration with their application.
It is requested that the Chapters inform their communities of these valuable scholarship opportunities. It is an excellent
opportunity to boost membership and stimulate interest in the JACL.
Any questions may be directed to National JACL Scholarship Committee Chair David Kawamoto at (619) 557-5796, or
[email protected].
JOHN TATEISHI HONORED
John Tateishi, was awarded with the 2007 Alice and
Clifford Spendlove Prize in Social Justice, Diplomacy
and Tolerance at University of California, Merced, at a
ceremony on November 26, 2007. The $10,000 award
comes from an endowment to the university fromn
Sherrie Spendlove, given in honor of her parents to
recognize an individual for his work to promote social
justice diplomacy and tolerance.
"This recognition means a great deal because of the
connection between my work with Japanese Americans
and the Central Valley where UC Merced resides," said
Tateishi. "I look forward to continuing interaction with
the campus community and helping to prepare the next
generation to take the torch and continue working for
justice and tolerance."
Tateishi has been active in the Japanese American community for many years, having been JACL’s National
Redress Director in Washington DC. Under his leadership, the goal was in 1988 with an apology from the
President and monetary payment to the internment victims. He led the JACL as its National Executive Director
from 1999 to 2006.
NATIONAL PURPLE HEART HALL OF HONOR
(The following article was contributed by Diane Kiyomoto, who recently visited the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor
in New York.)
“I recently visited the state of New York, and came across the "National Purple Heart Hall of Honor" which
is located along the Hudson River. It opened earlier this year. Sadly, there was only ONE Japanese-American Purple
Heart recipient (from Hawaii) was interviewed & videotaped.
I know that there are many thousands of J-A veterans from WW II who were Purple Heart recipients.
Please help me spread this information so that we can get more J-A veteran names recorded at this National
Hall of Honor.
Here's the official website for more information. Families can download an application form to submit
the information.
http://nysparks.state.ny.us/heritage/purple_hrt.asp
NOTE: If no military papers are available as proof of receiving the Purple Heart, I was told that a
photocopy of the inscription on the back of the Purple Heart is acceptable.”

Dianne Kiyomoto
