Assignment:
Create a book describing the arrangement of the Periodic Table of Elements
Objective: TEK 8.5C - Interpret the arrangement of the Periodic Table, including groups and periods, to explain how
properties are used to classify elements.
Materials:
Netbook: Website – Chem4kids.com, Science workbook pages 124-135 and Notes
3 pieces of computer paper or construction paper, Colored Pencils and/or markers and ruler
Booklet Pages:
Page 1 – Title Page and Name
Page 2 – Periodic Table: Glue your periodic table onto this page.
o Color code your metals, non-metals and metalloids on your periodic table and create a Color Key
 Metals – Blue
 Non-Metals – Yellow
 Metalloids - Green
Page 3 – Arrangement of the Periodic Table
o Read pages 131-133 in your workbook and list the 4 ways the periodic table is arranged.
Page 4 – Physical Properties of Metals, Metalloids and Non-Metals
o List the properties of each from page 131 in your workbook.
Pages 5 - 8: Complete the following for pages 5-8 in your booklet




Page 5 – Alkali Metals – Group 1
Page 6 - Alkaline Earth Metals - Group 2
Page 7 – Halogens – Group 17
Page 8 – Noble Gases – Group 18
1. Title each page with the name and number of each group.
2. Illustrate the entire group of elements like it is on your color coded periodic table
 Include the correct color of each tile and each element’s atomic #, chemical symbol, and element
name
3. Draw an atom model of the 1st element in each group.
 Make sure that you identify the protons, neutrons and electrons.
4. Identify the number of valence electrons for each group.
5. List the groups physical and chemical properties.
Page 9 – Transition Metals - Groups 3-12
o Do not illustrate! Just list the properties!
o Include the Lanthanides and Actinide Series
Page 10 – Questions: Answer the following questions using COMPLETE sentences.
1. Explain the FOUR ways the periodic table is arranged.
2. Describe what the groups/families are on the periodic table and what the elements in the same group have in
common.
3. Describe what the periods are on the periodic table and what the elements in the same group have in common.
4. What group of elements are the most reactive metals? Why are they so reactive?
5. What group of elements are the most reactive non-metals? Why are they so reactive?
6. What group of elements are unreactive elements? Why?
