Expressing opinions about Oliver Twist
Class III G
Exciting: this is the word to describe “Oliver Twist”. I liked it very much.
I thought about the story of Oliver Twist: his childhood was difficult but at the end he went to
live with Mr. Brownlow and he had a happy life.
I would recommend it to everyone, it’s very worthwhile reading it. ALBERTO BAFILE
I think Charles Dickens described the situation in which children, like Oliver Twist, had to live
in very well. It’s a good book, easy to read. I am happy I had the possibility of reading it, because I learnt a lot from it. ILARIA ORSINI
At school we read Oliver Twist and in groups we summarized each chapter. I think that it’s a
good and interesting book and I liked it. Oliver’s adventures were strange. The descriptions of
Oliver and of his situation in the workhouse were written in a simple but detailed way. I liked
the chapter about Mr. Brownlow who adopted Oliver, because they finally lived happily together. ARIANNA LATTANZIO
Oliver Twist is an interesting book that talks about a poor child. We studied it together at
school. Now I want to read the original text, but it’s very long and very difficult. We wrote a
short summary for all the chapters. When I’m older I’d like to help poor children like Oliver.
FRANCESCO RABOTTINI
I read “Oliver Twist” and I liked it a lot. The character that I liked most was Oliver, the main
character, because he had many adventures. The character that I liked the least was Fagin because he used Oliver to make money. I think that this book is very realistic because these
situations still exist nowadays. EUGENIO PROZZI
I read Oliver Twist in Italian and in English. Oliver is a moving book. Oliver had a hard and difficult childhood; in fact, before going to live with Mr. Brownlow and Mrs Bedwin, Oliver worked
in a workhouse. I’m happy that Oliver managed to have a good life with people who loved him, at
the end of the story. NICOLAS DI MICHELE
I read Oliver Twist last summer and I liked it. I loved the adventures of the unlucky protagonist. I think that Oliver Twist is a realistic and exciting book. All the characters are welldefined. Some parts of the story are sad, others are tranquil. The chapter I loved most was
the last one when Oliver was able to live a better life with the people he loved. NICOLE
MAGLIA
I particularly liked the character of Mr. Brownlow, because he is very generous and welcoming

Class III A
In November we started reading the novel “Oliver Twist” because it is part of our
Comenius Project. It was written by Charles Dickens and it was about the adventures
of an orphan, named Oliver Twist. This book taught me new grammar rules, a lot of
new vocabulary, the living conditions of children in the Victorian Age and what child
labour is. The novel is a sad story with an happy end; in fact Oliver Twist, the main
character in the book, was sometimes lucky and sometimes unlucky. The part of the
test that I liked most was when Oliver was adopted by Mr Brownlow, who was a kind
and generous man. Mr Brownlow gave him a home, new clothes, an education and love.
Finally he had a good life and a family, but in his life there were bad experiences also
after he was adopted. I really like this novel because it is based on a true and interesting story. Giulia D’Amico
It was a beautiful experience .My favourite character was Mr Brownlow because he
adopted Oliver and gave him a place to live, good nutrition an education and love .I love
this book because it was a sad story that has a happy end. This novel was set in London in the Victorian Age. Poor children worked long hours in the Victorian age; they
were chimney sweepers , they worked in coal mines and in factories , they sold newspapers . They worked in dark, dirty places for long hours . Oliver was born in a workhouse ;then he went to an orphanage and when he was 9 he went to a workhouse
again .It was a dirty place where poor people lived. My favourite part was when Oliver
asked for more porridge; Mr Bumble was furious and hit Oliver with a big spoon Marco
Casale
Fagin was a very bad man. He was old and bold. He had brown eyes and big hears. He
had a brown beard. He wore a brown jacket. He was dishonest, miser, mean, very
rude and selfish. He exploited some children. He offered them a house and poor food
in change of stolen things. He was a thief and he had a secret box full of jewels and
watches. In the end he was arrested and he was hanged. Luca Visconti

We did a great work for the Comenius project: we made brochures, games, but the
thing I liked most was the work on the novel Oliver Twist: we read the book, had tests
and made games on it. The character I liked most was Mr Brownlow: he was so kind
with Oliver and he adopted him. He’s quite tall and fat, he’s got short, grey hair and
brown eyes. He has a big nose and a beard. I liked the work on Oliver Twist because
it’s useful to know the story of Oliver Twist, in fact I’ve learned, for example, that I’m
very lucky to have a loving family. Lorenzo Aicardi
I’d like to describe my favorite character in the novel, Rose Maylie. She was a beautiful girl of 17 years old with a friendly smile. She had blonde hair and blue eyes, she
lived with her aunt, Mrs Maylie. She was very beautiful, honest and very rich. Maria
Delli Compagni
Oliver Twist is a fantastic novel. This book taught me some grammar rules. I read this
book in three months! It was very easy to read it. I liked this book because it was very
interesting. Luca Pucarelli
The experience I had reading Oliver Twist was fantastic. I had the chance to learn
new grammar rules and to improve my English. This book was very interesting even if I
must admit that I’m not a good leader, but I managed to read this book in one week!
And that’s a real record for me. This book gave to me precious information about the
life of children in the Victorian Age and how they were treated. They had a tuff life
and we should be happy to have the life we have. I really appreciated our teachers’
work! Riccardo Lister
I love this book. I loved this experience. My favourite part in the novel was when
Oliver was adopted .Oliver twist was born in a workhouse and his mum died. I liked
Oliver because he is a generous , honest and polite boy. I didn’t like Fagin because he is
dishonest, mean, rude and selfish. The novel is set in the Victorian age when poor children were exploited and worked in coal mines. Dicara Emanuele

After reading Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens we have compared life for poor children
and rich children during the Victorian Age and we have learned that poor children were
exploited, they worked long hours and they were underpaid. The jobs they did were:
chimney sweepers, book sellers, flower sellers, shoe cleaners. They often died because
they had no food or house. They often lived in the streets. My favoutite character was
Brownlow because he was generous, kind, honest and polite. He gave Oliver a house, an
education , new clothes and love. In my opinion Oliver Twist is not only a novel , but it is
a piece of history because it is based on a true story. I liked it very much ; at first
Oliver was very unlucky because he had a lot of misfortunes, but in the end he found a
family that loved him. Giosia Christian
This year at school for the Comenius project we
read and talked about the famous novel called
Oliver Twist. I think it is an amazing book! My favourite part was when Oliver was adopted because
he was happy and had a comfortable house to stay
with people who loved him. I didn’t like at all the
part when Nancy was killed by Sikes because she
had a bad life with sad facts. My favourite character was Oliver¸ he was a sad boy with short
straight ,blonde hair and blue eyes. He was very
thin because he didn’t have a proper nutrition. He
wore dirty clothes because he was very poor, like a
lot of children who lived in the Victorian Age. I
think we had the opportunity to learn a lot of interesting things from this book like the importance of education. In the end, Oliver was
fabulous! Grilli Joanna
The thing I liked was the conversation about Oliver Twist with our mothertongue
teacher, Mrs Gagliardi Antonella. My favourite question was “Who was your favourite
character ?”.
I replied “Nancy because she saved Oliver; she was sometimes kind and friendly to
Oliver ,but she was also dishonest. She had long, black curly hair.” To tell the truth my
favourite character was Oliver ; he was polite and optimistic. He had short, blond hair.
Pizzorulli Cecilia
I liked this novel very much because it is about children in the Victorian age when the
orphans lived in a workhouse and poor children couldn’t go to school; they worked long
hours in factories, sold newspapers and flowers along the streets, cleaned people
shoes or worked in cotton mills. My favourite character is Mr Brownlow who adopted
Oliver and gave him love , a comfortable home and sent him to the best school.

During the last term we read the novel “Oliver
Twist”. It’s about a true story and I really
liked it because it’s a sad story, but it has a
happy ending. My favourite character is Mr.
Brownlow because he was kind and generous;
he gave Oliver a house, education and love. Mr
Brownlow was short and fat and he had short
straight gray hair. His eyes were small and
black and he had glasses. He was rich and
adopted Oliver with Mrs. Maylie.

We have recently read Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, a story of an orphan who was
treated badly and cruelly. After he ran away from the shop where he was working , he
met some young thieves with their boss, Fagin who taught Oliver how to steal. Oliver
met some kind people who gave him a home an protected him by the criminals. I liked
this novel very much because it’s a very sad story ,but it has a very happy ending.

OLIVER TWIST:EXPRESSING OPINIONS-
classe 3^ H
Reading the novel “Oliver Twist”, I found out about the sad life of lots of
children, like Oliver, during Queen Victoria’s era, in England. In fact, these
orphans were forced to work in hard and precarious conditions. It was a
completely different life from ours.( Leonardo)
I think it is a very interesting story because
exploitation of children
I learnt about
the
in the 19th century and the differences between
rich and poor people. (Maria Regina)
I believe it is a fabulous novel because people can learn that having a family
that look after you is wonderful. ( Arturo)
I liked reading this novel because it taught me to love my lifestyle ; I think
I’m luckier than other children because I have a family, an education, a
house and I can enjoy my free time.( Vittoria)

Syracuse
Hi, !
I’ve just arrived in Syracuse, in Italy; I ’m really tired
because the journey was very long and difficult. I
crossed the Mediterranean sea with my brother. Before leaving Libya, we crossed Sudan and Egypt
It took us 2 weeks to reach Libya.
Our boat was very dirty, crowded and it wasn’t safe
because there were no life jackets, unfortunately
some people died during the crossing
We were all hungry and thirsty.
It was night when we arrived near the Italian coast;
the weather was very bad, there was a storm and we
were very wet and terrified.
We sent SOS signals and the Italian Coast Guards
helped us; they rescued us, they gave us some food and
water and some dry clothes..
We were taken to a migration camp and we were asked
for our documents; some doctors examined us
.I can’t give my address because next week we are
moving to Pescara. I hope it will be better than here.

My dear friend,
now I live in Pescara and we have no
money. I’ d like to attend school to have
an education to be a future computer
programmer.
I have no friends, but I would like to
have them.
Sometimes I work in the fields to earn
some money and help my family.
It is child labour and it is underpaid and
very tiring .
I usually go to Caritas; they give us some
food .
What about you and your family? What’s
happening in Asmara? Write soon .
Hugs
Your best friend

This is a letter that the students in III A wrote in class all together
thinking about the possible problems a young migrant has to face
when leaving his home country. This boy spent some time in our town
and now he lives in Milan.
Hi Filippo!
How are you?
It’s very difficult to make friends here.
Milan is very different from Pescara, but life is better
here because my father has found a good job and now I
can go to school. We live in a small house on the outskirts.
There isn’t a park where I can play or make friends. In
this area there are a lot of migrants and most of the
times I play with them. Sometimes I do my homework
with my school mates.
The main problem is communication because I don’t speak
Italian very well; at school my teachers are helping me to
learn Italian. I’ m very happy to attend school because
teachers are so nice!
My favourite subject is English because I learnt it in Nigeria when I was at primary school.
Sometimes I’m a victim of racism because of the colour
of my skin: last week there was a birthday party and I
wasn’t invited by one of my school mates. When I try to
speak Italian ,they laugh and this makes me sad. Some
boys don’t invite me to play football.
Today I’m very happy because yesterday I met a new
friend and he invited me to play computer games. Next
Friday I’ m having lunch with his family and in the afternoon we are doing our homework together and after we
are playing Call of Duty. My friend is very good at playing
the guitar and he wants me to learn it.
I would like to spend some time in Pescara next summer;
I can’t forget its nice sandy beach, good climate and delicious food! Why don’t you come and visit me in Milan?
Next April it will be my birthday and I would like to show
you some important places in this city. Have you ever
been to Milan? Write to me soon and tell me about your
life in Pescara.
